15:17 The weird thing is teary bamboo grows really fast. One form of torture in the old days was tying someone down over the bamboo spike and just letting it grow into him.

Yes them are bamboo babies...they pop up from the roots of the grown plants so that's why they ended up in the middle of the walkway...if someone digs them out they will have some nice bamboo shoots for eating. Looking forward to Hokkaido.

Happy birthday, Eric! "Toganji, one of the temples of the Soto Zen sect of Japanese Buddhism, has many links with India since one of the high priests of the temple completed his studies of Buddhism there." Indian motifs are pretty normal in Buddhist art in general, since it came from India, it's just the more obvious stuff like elephants tend to have not made it to Japan through China. For most of its history Japanese Buddhism was imported and re-imported many times from China after spending centuries evolving there. Direct influence from India is very modern, it's only really practical in today's age of airplane travel.

For about a year now, I've been having thoughts that totally paralleled what Eric said around 38' -- being close to the middle of the span between Tokyo and the Kansai region, having a unique food culture, some vision of what Tokyo may have been years ago... It's a place I've definitely considered living. (Plus, all of the big live music chains have venues in Nagoya so I can see the bands I care about.)

”kinako” is specifically TOASTED (or roasted) soybean powder, I was a fan! I first heard the word through Blackjack comics. 😊 Actually, if you’re lactose-intolerant, it DOES matter how much dairy you consume in a sitting (there are limits to the lactase or “cow pills” abilities). I like the red bean paste on toast (though they’ll digest more thoroughly with rice). You bet your butt that it’s instagram-able and your remarks on the enjoyable aspect of the EATING were valid. It also explains a lot of disappointment with such places, especially one one paid a little more than they were used to. Where I live, the most common reason to keep dogs out is because the pee stinks and the owners may not pick up the poo. Don’t know if that was the reason at the shrine, but perhaps the statues were exactly why something got out of control? Unusual to see “no dogs” signs otherwise, eh? Is it forbidden to send food back in Japan? And politely explain what is not to your liking? Or do you just feel weird about it as foreigners?
@kydeanderic Жыл бұрын
it would be very abnormal to send food back.
