Exploring NORTH BERWICK : Sunday Times Number 1 Place to Live 2024

In this walking tour I’ll take you from North Berwick’s West Beach to the harbour for stunning views of the Firth of Forth. As we walk along the beach you’ll see the houses which line the coast have ladders from their back gardens down to the sand, and the House Martins and Swallows which have recently arrived from Africa swooping and diving catching insects mid-flight.
As we approach the harbour, you’ll notice the life guard station with the ramp coming down towards the sand. It’s from here that any local emergency at sea is dealt with, with the lifeboat deployed from the blue building.
The harbour itself is always a hub of activity, with fishing vessels and tourist boats departing from here. This area is also the home of the Scottish Seabird Centre, an interactive experience for young and old alike to learn about the wealth of seabird activity around North Berwick. The Bass Rock (a rocky outcrop on the coast of North Berwick) is home to the world’s largest populations of Gannets and is a protected site. It is possible to take a boat trip around the Bass Rock to see the magnificent site of the Gannets diving into the water. Truly a site to behold!
The harbour wall was badly damaged in a recent storm and is being repaired as you will notice the workmen filling in the huge hole in the wall. As we walk around you’ll see the magnificent views out to the Firth of Forth, the Bass Rock and over to Fife.
