Also I loved what Rose said about curiosity and adventure and how that can keep our minds young. I have just turned 80 and can't stop travelling and adventuring, it is as necessary to meet as eating. Just been to Big Bend National Park with my son for some off road fun and ride off road here in the UK and soon will be in France again for for TET trails .....AND I lust after the roads of Peru, maybe I can make it before my time is up and if not can enjoy your videos and 'feed' of your sense of adventure. Motorbikes and adventure keep me young and healthy and out of hospital and happy.....you two have many more years of adventure ahead of you and you sure do know how to do it well.

What a treat... I have (some) fond memories of Northern Peru having bussed it for 3+ weeks a few years ago with my partner. We too went from Cajamarka to Celendin/Leymebamba and onwards to finally exit from Jaen to the assisted living village of Villcabamba . We saw exactly one other gringo couple @Kuelap throughout our time there .Been looking at your tasty videos of Patagonia where we intend to be in March, not bringing my Commando.

@@TwoWheelsThreeSheets We have a month in Patagonia, we'll rent a car in Puerto Montt... My 850 Norton Commando is older then you with rear sets and flat bars so it stays here ... The Peruvian side of the trip had paved roads and then Ecuador, not so much... our giant bus actually got stuck in the steep slime and we all got out and pushed. Hope you didn't pay for the martini with ants in it @ Chachapoyas

@fffej50 I'm not sure if you plan on crossing the border into Argentina at all, but if you are, make sure that the rental agency gives you the proper "poder" for the car. Too funny regarding having to push the bus! I swear to god, when I was riding South in 2019 during the wet season, I got caught behind a bus stuck on that very road out of Vilcabamba that was getting towed by a tractor!! 😅

Another stellar installment, well worth the wait. You think it can be hard checking into a hotel with a motorcycle? Try it with a donkey! Really pleased that you're showing ruins. Peru is fairly dripping with ruins, some of which rival Machu Pichu. Visitors will have a much more authentic experience if they avoid the crowds of Cusco and Machu Pichu and instead explore other sites around the country. I await with eager anticipation next week's episode. You'll be passing through Chachapoyas, site of some of Peru's most spectacular--and much less visited--ruin(s).

Ha ha... I can only imagine! 😅 The crowds and commercialization of Cusco & the Sacred Valley definitely distract from the grandeur of the region. I much prefer the small, out of the way sites, which are virtually abandoned and almost completely ignored. I was lucky enough to visit Kuelap on my ride down in 2019, but unfortunately we didn't have reservations (didn't realize we needed them) on our way north, so Rose missed out... 😕

@@TwoWheelsThreeSheets Oh, that's a shame for Rose to miss Kuelap. I've been to both Kuelap and Machu Pichu and Kuelap is the better experience, hands down. I last visited in 2017 with Amy as the climax of a 4 month caminata the length of Ecuador. The cable car had only been open for a month and it felt like they'd just cut the jungle away and exposed the underlying ruin the week before. We spent hours wandering around and only rarely saw another person. Kuelap is twice the size of Machu Pichu and much more interesting. At the end of the day I asked the attendant at the cable car station how many visitors they'd had that day. Twenty five. Compare that to the 2,000 -- 4,000 visitors Machu Pichu receives daily.

my first video. Not really fond of all the narrating as apposed to live comments. It is so very very rare to see 2 people on one bike touring. that would be extremely difficult and tight fitting. Speed recovery to Chad, your voice really calms my soul, this narrative about how Francisco Pizarro annihilated the First Nations in Peru, his Emperor Atahualpa, hits very close to my heart, despite the fact that I live in Toronto, Canada. I am from the Dominican Republic, everything we know as America today, started in my little island Quisqueya, with Christopher Columbus, and his finest rapists/murderers/thieves's crew(all prisoners) in October 12 1492, provided by Queen Isabelle herself. It was a tragic day to our history as Dominicans, within 30-50 years, Spanish colonizers wiped, raped, killed, tortured my entire Tainos (500-700 thousand indigenous) ancestors, Chief Anacaona saved her life escaping to Cuba, I have nothing of that great First Nation running thru my veins, thanks to the Spanish crown, they stole our gold, and until this day history repeats itself. I always visit First Nations reserves here in Canada, talk to them, just to feel home, Holocaust has always been present, sorry for the hard post, I know your intention is to show us culture, history, gastronomy, and make our lives easy to carry on. It's definitely a sore subject... although it seems to be more a topic of conversation in Brazil (re: the Portuguese) as opposed to the rest of the continent. Rose is 25% Native American, amd 65% Spanish... so she is a product of colonization. It's a fascinating, and very sad chapter in history.

I'm always amazed by the beauty that one can find in the simplest of things. You're right... that is the gold - that is El Dorado... I love it! As far as Chad's stomach woes.... Likely the lukewarm coffee he was served at the Hotel de Turistica the morning we arrived in Huamachuco. It was likely tap water / well water that had not been boiled. Peru is doing a much better job than Mexico regarding mountain roads...the Sierra madre is in my opinion one if the most beautiful landscapes in the world 🌎 but most of it unaccessible 😮

The highways in Peru generally either follow the historic network of roads established by the Inca or the Spanish or were built to aid in the extraction of Natural Resources. Did the Sierra Madre have a large population of indigenous inhabitants?

I can answer your question about roads in the Peru´s mountains. Yes, you are right. Peru has a tight relationship with its mountains. The Tahuantinsuyo ( Inca Empire) had 4 main suyos ( regions) that went from Colombia to Chile and Argentina. This huge road system called qhapaq ñan ( Inca´s main roads). Cusco was the center called the navel of the world. On the other side, Mexico is not as mountainous as Peru. They have more "flat areas" and Aztecas and Mayas were not really people living in the mountains.

Yes, Spain colonized Peru from 1534 until the 1820s: The conquest In 1532, Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro and his indigenous allies captured the Inca Emperor Atahualpa at the Battle of Cajamarca. This was the first step in a decades-long campaign that ended in 1572 with the Spanish execution of the last Inca leader, Túpac Amaru. The Viceroyalty of Peru The Spanish established the Viceroyalty of Peru in 1542 and collected taxes and labor from the local people. The impact on the indigenous population The Spanish conquest had a devastating impact on the lives of the indigenous people of Peru. The Spanish forced the natives to mine for silver and mercury, often for little to no pay. They also forced the natives to convert to Catholicism and drove many tribes from their homes. The end of Spanish rule Peru declared independence from Spain in 1821, but it wasn't until the Battle of Ayacucho in 1824 that Spain's rule ended.
