It was the time when people don't know better. Thanks to internet more people dgaf toward "high brow" movie reviewers. The best example is Netflix series of Marcopolo. The "Professional critics" hate it but viewers completely love it.
@cjwrench075 жыл бұрын
You have to remember, critics can see anywhere from 75 to 300 movies a year. So, things like the stupid movie tropes that we don’t notice or mind, are just an example of unoriginal thought to them. Plus, Siskel was always known for mostly ignoring comedies. His favourites would have been the modern movies from an actor like Daniel Day-Lewis. And when you are comparing something like. Lincoln. To Police Academy. It isn’t really a competition at all. And being a comedy, isn’t a good excuse for the overall stilted acting in this movie. Don’t get me wrong. I absolutely love this movie. And I have tons of nostalgia for this entire series.
@aaroncarson67155 жыл бұрын

Steven Farmer I agree that it's not on par with Airplane! or Blazing Saddles, but those are spoof movies. And Police Academy is a more subtle spoof, as it's not throwing references and jokes every other line of dialogue. It's a time capsule type of movie, that really shouldn't work. I think they were going for a Animal House/Caddyshack, with the police setting and premise.

@@sha11235 I second that. To be fair, the other ones going past the first film aren’t really noteworthy. Don’t give me wrong, PAs 2 thru 4 have their moments - but it doesn’t excuse the fact that they are one dimensional, paint-by-the-number stories. The characters are just there to perform their actions, they never really bond and don’t have any set goals to make them human and for the audience to root for them (apart from the first one). The only valid reason that these movies have proven profitable is just because of the visual aspect - particularly making it accessible for those who don’t speak English (i.e. Mr. Bean).

Or “What Academy?”, as a 20-something colleague at work said about a month ago. When I was growing up as a 70s kid - Hey, I’m only 46 - we had 5 channels for years, and weekends meant cheap old films were dumped on TV as pure filler, with 2 and often 3 films in a row padding out Saturday and Sunday schedules until everything went off the air around midnight. So I grew up watching loads of films from the 50s, 40s, 30s - And later, cheap films from the 80s. Today, it’s almost impossible to find just a single old - and I mean Old, not Netflix Old (circa 2007) - film Anywhere, and it’s almost impossible to have any meaningful talk about Cinema with any Millennial onwards. They May have seen Casablanca. They won’t have seen The Night My Number Came Up, Went The Day Well?, Lost Horizon - or Police Academy: Mission To Moscow.

"Why do you think I took you to all those Police Academy movies? For FUN? Well I didn't see anybody laughing, did YOU?"

I like the first four films in this franchise (especially Citizens on Patrol), but beginning with the Miami beach installment, I dropped out of Police Academy.

The first Police Academy movie is my number 1 favourite film of all-time. I must have seen it hundreds of times. Whenever I had a sleepover with my friends, we would rent a couple of videos (this being the mid-80s, there was a wide choice available) and Police Academy would have to be one of the tapes we got out. The subsequent movies gradually became less enjoyable because they were made with a family audience in mind (I believe from the 2nd movie onwards, they got PG ratings, meaning young kids could watch as long as a "responsible adult" was there with them).

I'll never forget part 3, especially Micheal Winslow's song that plays over the credits, which he provided all the sound effects for. Another great Exploring video, Cecil.

I believe the song was in Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol, and is called "Citizens on Patrol". Actually whole soundtrack of this movie is quite good.

Police academy movies especially 1-3 were a HUGE hit in Greek tv during the early 90's. Every time they were on I would get together with my friends next door, order souvlaki and laugh our ass out. Till this day we use many quotes. The random Blue Oyster scenes got us every time and just now I realised the Pepe le pew connection lol

I loved this movie when it came out, I was 8 and always tried to copy Michael Winslow. This was one of those franchises that can never be repeated.

I loved this film. I should have not been watching it when I was really young but I remember laughing so much. Some of the adult content I learned later on which made this film even more enjoyable. I do like the later films with Bobcat.

Ironically, I was thinking about this movie yesterday and that I wanted to watch it. You're right when you say this movie is very funny. I think a lot of the ire this series draws is when people think back, they remember the interior sequels that came after the first. Even the second one is nowhere near as funny as the first. Great video though. I'm off to watch Police Academy!

Jesus Cecil!!! "Fade to black", you made remembered a very fine movie, a great idea, that´s why I love your channel.

"Fade to Black" is an awesome and unusual character study, I was also glad Cecil brought that and hope he will make a full video on it one day. It deserves one.

PA 5: City Under Siege is my favourite, wish it ended on that one. The following one, hmmm. not so good.

I loved the first 2 and the 3rd one was pretty alright too, at least I thought so as a kid. Maybe that it wouldn't hold up if I would watch it again now, but that doesn't matter, since it is a classic of my childhood.

What got me into the series was actually my father who at the time these were coming out was an instructor at the Illinois State Police Academy. He'd gladly remember how I named my Duplo characters after the characters from the movie including Mahoney, Jones, Sweetchuck, Mauser and Tackleberry.

Woah, Roger must 've had a really bad day when seeing this. I mean it's not one my favourites, but good harmless fun that for some reason _aimed_ at getting an R.

I don't care what anyone says about the series as a whole, the original is GOOD. My ranking of the sequels would be 6, 4, 5, 2, 7, with the golden turd award going to 3 despite Proctors appearance and Blankes & Copeland being in it, I just never even chuckled at it. The series desperately needed Harris back and got a little better from 4 onward.
