I was the Key Grip on this picture. Mentioned was the creative contribution by the outstanding cinematographer, Peter Deming, who worked next to me to create the lighting, The old airplane used was an old WW2 vintage C-46 Commando, shot on the outskirts of Ft. Lauderdale airport. The farm was an actual old one in Davie, west of Ft. Lauderdale. It was hellish shooting there, in summer, coupled with some internal money problems with terrible catering. It was another paycheck at a time when they were few and far between. Your information was accurate, in line with my recollections.

This was the film I saw late one school night on a tiny television that scared the crap out of me and had me searching and failing to find it (pre-IMDb days) to the point where I had convinced myself it was a fever dream and that it was my own story and I should write it one day- I never did, but I did write one called Ghouls which had elements I got from Scarecrows. This actually happened with 2 films- this one and The Lost Continent, the latter of which was so batshit insane, I thought there was no way that one was real! Killer seaweed! Conquistadors! Walking with balloons!? Certainly an insane nightmare! Or was it...

I like this guy's enthusiasm for these movies for what they are. There is no need to take a snooty high ground. Also this channel takes note that even when the movie is cheesy and/or silly it still takes a tremendous amount of work and dedication to get the thing made, in low budgets the struggle is on almost every step of the way. This is great appreciation, a way to find forgotten movies that have worthy qualities and to show that low budget doesn't necessarily mean bad just as big budget definitely doesn't mean the film will be good.

I had looked for this for about three or four years when I found a vhs copy in a used book store that had a large used vhs section in 1999 or 2000. I was immediately smitten and super creeped out. Everything I’d read was true: it really was creepy and effective and, honestly, I figured it to be one of those ‘movie miracles’ long before I learned of its storied past. Now…with your more detailed look into such I’m more amazed and admire it more so. It’s a fun film and any self-respecting fan of horror are doing themselves a disservice in not seeing it.

I remember it did look low budget, but it had some creepy scares in it. I think if I had seen it earlier when it was released, I think I would have liked it more. I have always liked this movie, but it sounds like some of the things I like about it were accidents! The way you are almost never sure, as a viewer, if you are hearing people simply talking normally out loud, or the scarecrows speaking telepathically to the soldiers, or the soldiers talking to each other over their headsets... I always thought that was a really cool touch. But, it sounds like they just had a lot of footage of the soldiers wandering through the fields with no dialog, and just dubbed in some talking just to fill it out. It works really well, I think.

I watched this movie after watching your review. It's a fun goofy 80s horror flick that has some good themes going on that would be amazing in a remake. I like the idea of this random backwoods farmland being some kind of purgatory or hell where the robbers are left to suffer at the hand of some demonic force. Listen, it's really low budget and not even close to being well executed, but the idea is solid and the effects are kickass. I think it has the building blocks to be remade with some more polish. I think my favorite effect is the night vision zombie/scarecrow at the end that attacks the guy in the house. The exposed mutilated mouth with the goggles on remind of Vic Rattlehead from Megadeth.

We're you the kind to stay a long time in the store to choose the right films? I was like that. After an hour you got to the counter and the guy or the girl told you it was a special two for one. Damn! Another half hour to choose another one...

Yup. I’d be in the store for a couple hours every time. Could never make up my mind. My decisions were always based on the artwork on the VHS cover. And I always rented 3 or 4 so there was better luck getting a good movie.

Such a strange little film with a brilliant atmosphere.

This is the only movie that scared the tar out of me when I was a kid. Still find it unsettling to this day. Nice to see it wasn't forgotten!

I remember renting this as a kid. Fun movie, but I had no idea the making of it was so wild too.

_"Alligator Alley"_ is a highway -- part of Interstate Highway 75 -- that runs east and west across South Florida {and through the Florida Everglades}, connecting Miami on the Atlantic Coast to Naples on the Gulf Coast.
