Carry a can of Halt! spray. It’s harmless pepper spray, but after being hit in the nose with it a couple of times, most dogs learn to stop attacking cyclists. I’ve heard of a few dogs being struck by cars while they’re focusing on charging a cyclist. I’ve personally seen a big dog that was charging me halted in his tracks by a tractor trailer rig passing between us. It must have missed striking him by just millimeters. Pepper spray is definitely more humane than death by squashing or having their head cut off to test for rabies, and several of friends over the years who don’t carry dog spray have been bitten.

@@prestachuck2867 I have spray, but it's dangerous to use. If strong wind there is blowback and get as much on yourself, as dog. And, I am not talented enough to ride and spray dog. Need both hands on the bars. Another rider told me carry a taser in legal states. Just the sound of taser sends most dogs retreating.

@@prestachuck2867 Ten plus years ago, I witnessed first-hand a dog so focused on chasing me, that he didn't catch the semi-trailer in the way. He wasn't as fortunate as with your encounter. Ironically, I have a dog encounters video launching tomorrow.
