I had a flashback when you took the Trafficmaster unit apart. Years ago when Trafficmaster were setting up and putting in all of the infrastructure they were contacted by a good friend of my father's that works for the DTI. Someone discovered that during manufacturing a slight boo boo was made and the wrong frequency was programed into both the transmitters and receivers. This was discovered after well over 1000 sites had been commissioned. The result was that Trafficmaster had to recall and re-program all the kit out on site. OOoopsy !!!! It made me chuckle when your video reminded me of the rather large screw up :-D

Hi Clive. Love your videos... so laid-back and natural. I've also fallen for some of your diagnostic equipment. I've had a HOPI for several years now, and several multi-meters, most of which are true RMS. I also use Weller temperature-controlled soldering (the one with the Curie-point magnetic tips). I have a 10A 35V variable bench PSU and a digital 'scope etc. One thing I didn't have (until the other day, that is) is a thermal imaging camera. But I've just bought a (slightly used) FLIR ONE for use with iPhone and iPad. I like it a lot, but am aware of its slight limitations. There is an excellent range of diagnostic gizmos from Peak Electronic Design in Buxton, Derbyshire however, none of which I have ever seen amongst your formidable arsenal. I have had one of their DCA55 units for about ten years now and it's brilliant. Well worth a look at their website (www.peakelec.co.uk/). I would think their DCA75 would be right for you. Purchased direct from Peak, their prices are a tad lower than Amazon or eBay. There are several informative videos on the Peak website, which I wholeheartedly recommend. Many thanks for your most entertaining and informative videos.

Ah the 'personalised roadwatch' - a disguised Trafficmaster box based on their Trafficmate product. Served its data on 153.2750 from roadside boxes encoded POCSAG FSK (mainly now those 'blue poles' you see which generate an MD5 hash of the reg number & track journey times between adjacent sites). Their older product with the big display worked similalry but displayed stuff on a big map. That got its data over Vodafones national paging network in POCSAG. Beacons are still fitted, network still works. The data is just now presented on apps on phones instead of dedicated devices. Trafficmaster started out at Marlborough House in Linford Wood, before moving up to a massive building (all theirs) at Cranfield - they now occupy a couple of floors at most I think, rather than the whole building. Madness with their ANPR 'blue pole' network is each pole site has its own dedicated ADSL connection. They used to be dialup with data shipped back every 5 minutes. The modem rack in MK was quite a sight! God i'm a ruddy anorak!

Niiiiiice! Did the RAC one need an 'information key' chip or not? I had the old Trafficmate doorwedge shaped thing, and the newer flatter one. Still around somewhere I think. Latterly I had the iQ (like an early satnav with a screen) - all of them were 'protected' by one of those keys which only told the unit an expiry date ISTR. Wound up reverse engineering the protocol because, well, I'm just sad like that & at the time I was a radio travel news geek :) All pointless now of course with Inrix (nee Trafficlink & Metro Networks) feeding data into the TMC carrier on Classic FM for your Satnav & Google doing their own traffic probing...and Waze of course. That said, Inrix are still using humans to do the editorial work for the most part. Many a long 12 hour shift doing that in between dialling into BBC Local Radio stations to depress the driving public ha

Flashlight do not store typically charge for remembering modes. They use software to save the previous mode to eeprom and when it turns on next time it reads the previous mode from eeprom and selects next one. The ones with mode memory usually wait a few seconds before they write the "remembered mode" to eeprom. That way quick on/off swithing changes modes constanly and after it has been on for a while it stores the mode and next time it turns on in that one instead of advancing to the next one. (other software methods exist for this but this is to give you an idea of how it may typically work) Oh, the focusable light with moving led have typically very bad thermal conduction from led to the outer shell. That means they heat up and tend to not last too long untill the led has suffered and dimmed.

Clive, the driver on the torch may have a memory function. You flick through the modes but half pressing the switch rather than on and off. If it has memory on the driver they normally kick in after a few seconds. So if you switch it off on say the highest brightness it should come on at that setting.

Away with ye, Clive. You've got to go a long way to beat the EMTs of the late sixties and early seventies. In my mind, 1968 stands out as probably the best I ever saw, with 1967 being almost as good, but to me, the EMT seemed to lose its way when the practical displays were discontinued. The glory days will always be when the army teams dismantled say, a Mini, or a Land Rover, carried it over a wall, threaded all the bits through a gun loupe, transported the same to the far end of the esplanade, reassembled the vehicle and drove it off the esplanade to much applause. The first to complete the task was the winner. That amongst other displays, and the grand finale with the massed bands, the pipes and drums, and ultimately the lone piper on the rampart. I haven't attended a live performance since about 1972/73, and sadly probably never will be able to again. Some interesting goodies in the bag there! Do you ever watch "Pile of Stuff" channel? He gets regular mailbags of stuff like these, which he takes to bits for our entertainment, or sometimes kits to assemble as we watch. 2017, eh? Feels like a lifetime ago now.

@@bigclivedotcom I remember them well, and particularly at the "Royal Tournament" from Olympia (I think it was) in London, but the Royal Tournament ceased many, many, moons ago. Unfortunately the HSE put a stop to a lot of these kinds of display. I do remember watching a Royal Naval display which featured Navy Cadets in a display on a mocked up three masted rigging. I was getting dizzy just watching them climbing up and out on the masts and yards. I went sick as a sea going parrot when I saw "The Button Boy" climb to the top of the mainmast, and then to stand on top of the 'button' (the small round disc at the top of the mast) with no means of support or safety harness of any kind, and he did this in the dark, with spotlights shining on him. He certainly earned his tot of rum for that!

They are non polar I use those ones in audio equipment; multicomp I think. Panasonic SU series ones are better tolerance though. For smps use I haven't found better caps than Panasonic FM series. Generally, I risk getting a shock and when my laptop battery goes to crappers I try to tear it apart without a shock and usually get one. But those last way longer than the Ultrafire ones do. What is Ultrafire knocking off. (and yes thanks to you Clive having a 5000 mah light weight li ion batter vs a 2000 heavy weight battery hmmmmm which one is better. Although not always true.. Antec PSU computer grade , that shorted right out off my left hand and out the right foot (ouch) but the old cheapie $20 Logosys PSU's are nearing 13 years old and still rocking. Antec ($80 PSU) says hey 4-5 years is good. Logisys (sp) somehow they last longer. Especially the all black ones. Had an iffy go with one that was half black half olive green. One of the rails fails my PSU tester O_O As for puffed up capacitors. I had to toss a motherboard out when 6 in a row all did that. Mercury PC did that. I'm surprised that cannons designed to fire off pounds of black powder and shot would be affected by firing fireworks out of the barrel. They could just stick a temporary bore liner in the cannon for the show. If this show was based in 'Merica then they would probably be firing black powder blanks. Otherwise great video mate.
@michaeltempsch52827 жыл бұрын
IIRC from the earlier video showing them, they had multiple shots set up on each cannon. Not feasible to have a gun crew on each gun, reloading them. From a distance you probably can't make out if the flame comes from the actual bore or just next to the barrel anyways.
