Exploring Abandoned Mines and Unusual Places

Күн бұрын

The exploration of the abandoned mine known as the Rosemont Tunnel continues. The tunnel plunges into the mountain and is reported to be 3500 feet long with an opening at the far end on the other side of the ridge. Here in Part 2 we reached some of the furthest reaches of the mine and found some unusual features including a dangerous bridge over a steeply inclined ore pass, an unusual cistern in a backfilled tunnel, and other things. Did we actually reach the other end of the 3500-foot long tunnel? You’ll have to watch the video to find out!
If you missed Part 1, you can get caught up by using this link: • Exploring the Abandone...
Once again I joined with Jim and Gail from ‪@Porty1119‬ , Todd from ‪@ZiaMountainAdventures‬ , Joe from ‪@ExtremeFieldTripEntertainment‬ , and Justin from ‪@ABANDONED_UNDERGROUND‬ for this adventure. Please be sure to visit their respective KZbin channels using the links above and check out some of their abandoned mine exploration videos. They all have some excellent content on their channels! “We are the real mine explorers!” LOL

Hey Frank! I have to say, this has been one of my favorite mines. The bridge was super scary, it gave it a horror movie vibe. I loved that. It also had a touch of mystery with the pipes. Very good video Frank! I hope to see you soon :)

Glad you enjoyed it! We were disappointed that we couldn’t reach the far end of the tunnel and exit the mountain on the other side. A major collapse was blocking the way. Based on where the collapse was, we missed about 75% of this mine. It really is extensive underground although the drifts seem to be kind of aimless and exploratory in nature. Definitely an unusual one, that’s for sure! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!

Thanks, Todd! Yeah, there is definitely much more to see in that mine we were all at on Sunday during the recent trip. All those winzes must go somewhere! I looked that mine up in some mining reports and stuff like that which said it has several miles of underground workings - or something to that effect. It also said that all those mines in that area are basically interconnected with each other which, as you know, we found out when we squeezed through that little hole and made our way down into the neighboring mine. Will be interested to see what you guys find out there. Be safe!

Yeah, finding that cistern was pretty neat. The fact that it was in that drift tunnel that was directly behind the metal bridge at the top of that steeply inclined ore pass was interesting, too. Lots of mysteries in this mine! We only got to see a fraction of what was there because the main tunnel that goes all the way through the mountain for about 3500 feet total was blocked with a huge collapse. One of the explorers with us who had some knowledge about the mine said that we were only able to see about 15% or so of the entire thing because of that collapse which had sealed off the rest of the workings. Might have to go back and approach it from the other open end of the tunnel and see if we can get in from that side. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Thanks for your enthusiastic comment! Yes, sometimes when we come across this equipment deep underground, it does evoke a feeling of spookiness to a slight degree. And slight sadness. What gets me is the fact that the equipment has been sitting there underground for all those decades if not for a century, and it will never move again, either. It will always be there in the dark and quiet. I don’t know - there’s just something kind of gloomy about that, if you know what I mean.

@AbandonedMines11 Yes! It has a sense of mysticism about it, that it will act as a time capsule for us and all those who come later, like an echo of the past. I love history, so I'm fascinated by the traces people-long-past have left. It's a bit sad that they're gone, but it's beautiful in a way to find them in the things they did. Thanks for the new video, I'm super excited for part 3!

Thank you very much for this very interesting and informative video presentation which we are most grateful for. The work that you do in providing these for us is much appreciated. The bridge could be repaired by using metal plates in place of the plywood. The plywood was never likely to have a long life, solid wood would have been better. The collapsing areas could have metal placed around the area to strengthen it, but if there are no plans to reopen the mine the work would not be necessary. The mine certainly had a good long life and had proved by its longevity to have been remunerative for the miners, maybe there would still be minerals of value when mined using current techniques.

Hey, John! Good hearing from you! Yes, a metal plate would've been a much better idea for the bridge deck. They might've used the plywood because they weren't planning on being their for a long time. Definitely was an unusual mine. Seemed very exploratory in nature with all of the extensive, wandering tunneling. Thanks for dropping by and taking the time to comment!

Yeah, that bridge was something else! That piece of plywood covering the bridge was totally soaked and rotten. It was like mush! That’s why we had to step on the metal crosspieces instead. I believe I have only seen a bridge in one other mine and that was in one of my early explorations back in 2012 or something like that. It was pretty far underground, too, and went over an extremely deep, almost vertical shaft. The cistern in this mine was the first time I’ve seen something like that in a mine. Very unique! Glad you enjoyed the video, Dan. Thanks for checking it out!

Thanks for your comment. That bridge sure was something! It’s amazing how that piece of plywood that was placed over the bridge has become totally waterlogged and mushy. One of us did test it out by stepping on it lightly only to have his foot go all the way through it. At the very least, it was a good reminder that timbering of any sort in flooded and wet mines needs to be approached with caution. It will be compromised!

@@luminoussoundsyt Hey, Alex! The mine might’ve been a lot drier when it was actively being worked. But who knows? Whenever that plywood was placed across that bridge, perhaps the miners weren’t planning on using it that long. It might’ve held up for the first five or six years. But again - who knows? Believe it or not, it’s easy to avoid getting lost in these mines. They usually are only one way in and one way out. When you start ascending and descending to other levels, then things can get problematic if you don’t make notes about the route you’ve taken. I’ve been doing this for 16 years or so, and there have only been a couple of mines where it was necessary to keep very good track of my route or risk otherwise getting hopelessly lost.

When we were exiting the mine at the end of the video, I was filming with minimal lighting. When I edited the video, it was very dark so I had to turn up the brightness level or something like that in order to make the footage more visible. That caused all the graininess that you see. Sorry about that! Thanks for checking out the video, though, and taking the time to comment.

Hey man, what was the purpose of the cistern?
@AbandonedMines11
@AbandonedMines11 10 ай бұрын
That’s a good question! The vertical pipe in the center of the cistern meant that it was providing water to a lower area, perhaps. But it seemed that the pipe might have been clogged because the amount of water dripping into the pool would not be enough to compensate for the outflow through the pipe. Maybe at an earlier time more water was trickling into that pool than there is now. It’s all a mystery, that’s for sure!
@AnthraciteHorrorStories
@AnthraciteHorrorStories 10 ай бұрын
@@AbandonedMines11 could have silt built up into the pipe too. We have wells out here, I swap out the actual well sediment filter in the basement every 6 months or so, lots of silt, dirt, minerals build up into that. Interesting in a mine though.
