@@TheLukeExplores I almost gave this video a thumbs down because You said that about MLS. When the "Redskins" were good; that place was standing room only! In the 1980's and early 1990's; they arguably had the best home field advantage in all of NFL football. Only other contenders were GB and KC.

The old Washington Senators played in that stadium, Ted Williams coached them for a couple of seasons. The Nationals also played there while their new stadium was being built. Of course , the skins played there as well for over 30 yrs. There’s a lot of history in that stadium. Just think of all the people who have come and gone, and now it stands completely empty.

That's pretty much the story of every major stadium in the country. Cheaper and easier to upgrade and update when building from scratch. Getting up to new codes, having modern amenities and treating any structural issues for these decades-old structures just isn't worth the effort or budget. But there are many, many memories across the country for stadiums just this that housed teams in various times of victory and defeat, and non-sporting events that shaped the times as well. Great memories are sometimes better than trying to recreate a past that no longer exists.

I saw the Dead and the Allman Brothers here in 1973 while ending my tour of duty at Ft. Dix. We brought a boda bag full of grape juice, and a bag of food. But once you were 50 feet from.the dreaded single turnstile our bag of food got squished away from us and we saw the food bouncing along on the shoulders on the crowd, never dropping. The grape juice made it in with us. As soon as the Dead started playing, they sounded like they'd been jamming for an hour. I caught Gil Scott Heron at a small club and Herbie Hancock and Weather Report somewhere back there also in 1973. Then out in August to go to college in the bay area. Not bad, on to Keystone Korner then and saw all the jazz greats. Later in the 90's I filmed Pat Martino and Dave Liebman, and those are on my channel.

It was the very first of the "cookie cutters." It's unique upper deck set it apart. But it was an impractical design. The scoreboard couldn't be seen by everyone. (Eventually the Redskins were so desperate to cram more seats in there, they simply covered up the scoreboard with more end zone seats.) The sideline seats were too low to the field. (That was a mistake made by every cookie cutter stadium, including the SkyDome. If you're sitting in the first row, then the deck should be at least six feet above the field to see over the football bench.). Baseball fans hated the lack of field-level seats in the outfield, plus the fact that it was so stinking hot.

Thank you so much for this video. The exact instant your video popped up in the suggestions, the first thought that came to my mind was "That has to be where the coheadlining Metallica/Guns N Roses tour started," on July 17, 1992. 🏁💯✨🎊 I was 18 years of age when that tour started and was lucky enough to catch it at the Pasadena Rose Bowl on October 3, 1992. Thank you so much too for not putting music up here. There is some type of ultra-tranquility to these videos of walking through abandoned places and the only sound is just the breeze and distant traffic. Just subbed and liked. Great video Luke. As you are walking through there my mind is being pulled back over and over again to high school when my friends and I were repeatedly watching MTV for any kind of new news about "It's starting at RFK Stadium." It looks like Metallica played that stadium four years earlier on June 10, 1988, with Van Halen and several other bands during the "Monsters of Rock Tour" right before AJFA was to be released. 💯❤🏁

Hope you enjoyed!! I’m so glad I got to go before demolition/repurposing. Dangerous however, given the chance again I would not have gone alone. Something quite mysterious about being in there by myself in such an open space…. Quite a surreal moment if you ask me💯

I used to live in Vienna back in the day, and remember going here for concerts when I was a teenager. I saw HFS Festival here back in 1994... they had No Doubt, Bush, and several other bands. Loved that stadium... so sad to see it abandoned.

When I was little, my dad used to take me to rfk to watch the nationals. One time a politician gave him 2 box tickets to the area you said you didn’t know where you were at. He get emotional walking through that same skywalk and I didn’t understand why. Then I grew older and read about all the history and saw so much old footage. Dignitaries, presidents, celebrities and other people of note walked that same skywalk you did. That place was a right of passage to the city. Now it’s just a memory

I worked for Star Armory / armory Board Box as a bar back in the Red Room in 1982 & 83 . I was allowed to stand and watch the game from the mezzanine section 5 min. after kickoff . I had to come in Sat afternoon and take kegs up to the fridge between the Blue Room and the Red Room and set up tables in both rooms . Obviously the concessions are nothing compared to today , but what a rockin' place to see football . I started going there in 72' .

They can’t blow it up but must use a wrecking ball instead because of the DC tunnels underneath still used. Cool to have you walk through the old stadium. Makes me think how crazy the colosseum in Rome built in 70 AD still exists.

I remember going to many skins games back when I was a kid in that stadium. For skins fans, this stadium was more than a venue, it was magic. EDIT: that big "Budweiser" sign in the back of the endzone was always my favorite thing to look at during timeouts.. I'm also surprised that nobody has stolen those monitors yet.

Vikings fan here, this was one of my all time favorite ball parks. Such a shame that they let it go like this, hopefully the Redskins, (they're still the Washington Redskins in my book) will be able to return to this area again, even if it's in a new ball park. It would be good for the team and the city.

This makes me so sad (and nostalgic) I moved to DC in the late 80s and so many of my fondest DC memories are based in that stadium. Redskins, world cup, DC united (when they were good) HFStivals (probably the most fun... no definitely!!) and finally The Nats when baseball finally came back to DC We all want a new stadium on that spot, let's hope it happens!! RFK closed because DC United moved to the new Audi Field stadium next door to Nationals Park along the Anacostia waterfront. After their move, it was pretty much lights out at RFK save for a random concert or random event until the COVID shutdown closed it for good.

Always regretted never seeing a game here. When the Skins were playing Dallas, the fans actually were so excited, their stomping & jumping actually made part of the lower stands shake up & down. Only was there once to see Team America soccer team tie Italian team Juventus 0-0 in 1983. Wherever they build new Commanders stadium they need to dedicate statues to Redskin all time great players like Art Monk, Sammy Baugh, Darrell Green, John Riggins.
