Exploring the Abandoned Military Island of Vis, Croatia.

In this video, we will be exploring the abandoned military island of Vis, Croatia! Vis is a very interesting island with some fascinating history, some of which I go over in this video. Most people who come to Vis come to check out the beautiful beaches (The beach from the film Mama Mia was filmed here) but we will be taking a different approach by looking for the remnants of what used to be a heavily fortified military island.

Fun fact:Vis still has an active base.It is a bit suspicous and suspected to be a missle base.

Fun fact: a lot of people from Komiža emigrated to San Pedro, California where they continued to work in the fishing industry.

You haven't seen even 5% of the tunnels, all this was done after World War 2, the whole island was a military base .. with large caliber cannons and land-to-sea missiles, submarines and fast ships armed with long-range missiles! The Croatian army took over the bases in 1992 during the Homeland War, since then it has been abandoned. All bases and tunnels were in such good condition until 1991 that they were at the level of a 3-star hotel.I Served in the Yugoslav People's Army in 1986, and it was mandatory for every citizen for a year, then I was on the island for 15 days on landing exercises, it was interesting. During World War II, Tito was on the island for a while. ..there is also an airport where American planes landed, from Sicily. 1943-1944 The place where you can't take pictures is a military base with radar in the NATO system ... a base of the Croatian army

Yea I know, I barely even skimmed the surface of all the tunnels. I was only there for a day but wish I had time to see more of them. Thanks for sharing more history of the island! Place is a trip

@@journeyman_ram wanna hear some rumours? old folks used to tell us children Tito was actually always in hotel Issa with some fine women and only soldiers used to sleep in the caves and underground. he did a couple of photoshoots for the newspapers, making sure to be seen at strategic points and that's it.
