The Acropolis in Athens is considered the start of western civilisation and we investigate and explore this stunning site. But visiting the Acropolis in the Winter? Is that a good idea, well see for yourself, you might just be surprised.
If you are new here, we are just your average British couple with an extraordinary dream to travel and as such, sold our house and all our stuff so that we could explore the world for the next 10 years, seeing different cultures, meeting interesting people and sharing it from our perspective.

I've been reading a book, The Greatest Benefit to Mankind: A Medical History of Humanity. It's amazing to me how much of modern medicine has its roots in ancient Greece. Not just Hippocrates, but so many others who practiced in Greece and wrote volumes and volumes about their cases and discoveries. Fascinating stuff! I can't wait to go there myself one day. : )

Hey Linda! Ahhhh THANK YOU!!!! As you said that, we will let you in on a little secret. When we watch other KZbinrs (which we do more than we ever watch TV) we get annoyed when there are long musical montages that don't really go anywhere or move the story of the video along. So you will find that when we do have a montage, we tend to keep it quite brief and interesting and hopefully moving the story. Then for this video, you see that we put a very long montage of the Acropolis in. We had a very long discussion in the edit of this... "Are we doing just the thing that we see others do and that annoy us?" We took the following view; we hoped that firstly it would give a wider perspective of what you would actually find at the Acropolis and then the place is so important to the world and is so majestic that we decided to go into the musical element with gusto! Note also, we spent over 2 hours selecting that track for the video. We didn't want to do half measures. So a very heartfelt THANK YOU from both of us for letting us know. We really appreciate it. @@2GoRoam Then if you return I suggest visiting 5 locations. 4 of them to Pireas and one is outside between Athens and Piraeus. First is Kastella Hill ( better at night for dinner) for an unbelievable view of the the Athens Riviera. Second the smallest of the 3 ports of Pireas, Microlimano again for dinner. For a stroll around the yacht port to Zea’s port better on an afternoon and after this for a dinner at one of the many fish restaurants further out at Piraïki (in Greek Πειραϊκή). Τhe fifth location is SNFC complex (Stavros Niarchos Foundation Complex) at the beginning of Syngrou Avenue which presents many activities from sailing to reading in the National Library or visiting the National Lyric stage (Opera) or watch a movie to the summer open air cinema in its grounds. Or last for a coffee or tea at the roof top with a 360 degree view of Castella or the Sea or to Acropolis to the North (seen through a telescope because is at least 6 Kilometers away.

Loved your tour of the Acropolis - I have yet to go. As a Classical Studies Major (ancient civilizations) this was always on my bucket list. Hubby and I were supposed to do a Mediterannean cruise in October 2021, (Venice, greek islands, Athens, Ephesus, etc) but that didn't happen! Still want to go and off-season makes the most sense, based on your experience. Great video shots!! Nice work. It's wonderful that you share these tour videos and as I look out my window to a snowy field in Canada, your videos of the places in the sun are very inviting. I look forward to seeing next week's 'Athenian Riviera' - i've never heard of it, and it may be an amazing alternative to busy Santorini. A "few" of observations ;-) 1. THANK YOU for pronouncing gyros with its correct guttural emphasis. Americans here do the “Ya-eeeeh ---roe” pronunciation with makes me even more of a follicle challenged human. 2. The comment to your country men about the sun was pretty funny. I send pictures of sunny California to my friends up in Seattle Washington where its near London-dreary and they send me hate mail for days. Always happy to spread the weather love to those in crap weather places LOL! 3. I was surprised at the graffiti. I thought it was a native inner-city issues only in America, but am happy to see the “art form” knows no boundaries ;-) 4. Brother don’t you DARE posts sounds and video of you running ever again. Your heart palpitations made my car alarm go off ;-) 5. GREAT way to use Google Earth for reference points in your travels, and I know how much work this is to incorporate into video editing, so kudos to you for taking the time to do this. So useful! 6. It occurs to me that 2 and one half thousand year ago they didn’t tell stories using calendar dates such as we measure by today, so I wonder how they referred to time back then? Like …. What was a year? They surely didn’t say “today is the year of our (soon to be born) Lord 500 BC …. “ Hmmmmm 7. Care to share what your GoPro camera settings are when you pan about? Inquiring minds wanna’ know …. :) 8. Your historical musings and opinions about where you are, done in extemporaneous manner is SO much better than some of the scripted stuff you see in other Vlogs. Well done Mate! Well done. 9. Thank you for selectively using background music when necessary and not 100% of the times, especially when you’re talking. Hey Dardin, As usual.... AMAZING comment! So here goes man... 1. We are generally awful at pronunciation but at the moment, we keep asking people while here in Greece to improve what we say and the Greek people are more than lovely enough to do that for us which is pretty cool eh. 2. Well if we can't wind up our fellow countrymen, then what can we do eh. 3. We have been surprised at the graffiti however we have to say that it isn't necessarily a bad thing. In our later years we are about as open-minded about everything as we have been in our lives and everything we see or experience everywhere, we tend to put a lens on it of appreciating it from our respectful distance and if that is what the kids here do and the Athenians are cool with it then so are we. Another example of this thinking and how we have changed is; there are just no stray cats in the UK so the default thought we would have if we saw a stray cat would be "Ahhhh the poor thing what can we do for it!" we could tell a funny story from when we holidayed in Cyprus many years ago and befriended a cat. Then we get somewhere like this and there are stray cats EVERYWHERE! But the people of Athens look after them. I now don't feel sorry for these stray cats, they just live a parallel world to us humans here and that is pretty cool in my view (Neil that is). 4. I am going to have to give that running a miss in future. Last thing I need are viewers starting law suits against me for setting off alarms and things. That won't do. 5. Thank you my man, I am not an Google Earth user so it too some getting use to. A lot to learn if I am to do that again. 6. I think they way they did it back then was based upon when they last ate.... "You seen Jack recently?" "No, last time I saw him was back in 12AD" "Blimey that was a long time ago, at least I saw him in 3BC" I can't claim that I am absolutely right, but I think if you look it up, I am probably close enough. 7. Absolutely. 50fps / Wide / Hypersmooth Boost / High Bitrate / EV 0 / ISO 100 - 800 (never higher GoPro can't handle it) / Sharpness Medium / Colour GoPro 8. I mentioned this on another comment and its just how we like to do things. But, we don't like to read too much of Tour Guides because by knowing too much we feel it takes us away from it meaning anything to us apart from some random dates. So we want to know something but not too much. Take for example in this one, we wondered where the marble was mined from so then we wanted to talk about how we feel about that, to make it real to us. Not sure this is making a whole lot of sense... With the Theatre, I really do think of people back then and thinking that I am watching them all taking their seats, how amazing that just feels to see. If I knew a lot of mindless facts along side that it would remove some of the feeling. I am rambling. 9. Oh we get annoyed too if music is competing with the vocals. I spend the last hour of every edit on ensuring that the levels don't cause that. It can be infuriating! 10. Ahhh cool thank you so much. I always look for opportunities but that one looked too good to miss. Appreciate you noticing that. AND thank you for sharing. We know that KZbin is a long game. Every now and again we suffer a little despondency but that last no more than 5 minutes as... we have no right to expect someone to watch our videos and we shouldn't be doing it if we are not enjoying the challenge and the process that it gives us. We absolutely love putting these together and its fun for us to both work together on this, really is a positive for our relationship and travels. Hey Joseph! That is the one great thing about Athens eh, we assume that not much has changed since you were here, certainly of the ancient sites. Hello from a citizen of Athens! I was told many years ago by an archaeologist that Parthenon's restoration is a never ending process. Working on those ancient pieces of marble is such a slow and difficult process that by the time restoration is done, cleaning processes have to start over. That is the problem of preserving antiquities in the center of contemporary metropolises. Great video!

Interesting video question that came to mind while watching. Do you feel Slow travel (vs faster pace travel) is earlier or more difficult during the pandemic. Obviously it is all harder but in comparison to other travel how do you feel covid impacts slow travelers?

It didn't apply to slaves or women. Only men were a part of the Athenian democracy and they would speak for themselves and not be represented by deputies, like in modern democracy. Given many countries nowadays treat women like objects, slavery is still a thing through human trafficking and freedom of speech gets restricted by the minute, they still were way ahead of their time!

Yep absolutely AK, I just commented to Erin on this point, that we did discuss this on the day on camera but the cut it from the final video. We had over 5 hours of footage from this day so sometimes we have to take a bit of an editorial view. I agree with you though, on balance when looking the fact that this was 2500 years ago, there are countries that today that should be reading the history books. Thank you for discussing.
