This was to be a journey that tested my endurance and navigation skills like no other.
The idea of walking the Beacons Way had always intrigued me and learning about its history and the passion of its creator, John Sansom, only added to the allure. So, with a backpack filled with essentials and a heart full of excitement, I set off on this iconic trail.
The moment I began the hike, I was immediately struck by the sheer grandeur of the landscape. The National Park truly lives up to its reputation as a place of high hills, deep valleys, and boundless moorland. The vistas that unfolded before me were nothing short of breathtaking. The rolling hills and rugged terrain seemed to stretch on endlessly, with each turn in the path revealing a new aspect of the park's beauty.
The route itself was demanding, with steep uphill climbs and undulating ridges that pushed my physical limits. But with each ascent, I was rewarded with panoramic views that made the effort worthwhile. The National Park's diverse landscapes came alive before my eyes, from lush valleys to rocky peaks, and the wildlife that called this place home added an extra layer of wonder to the experience.
What truly set the Beacons Way apart from other trails I've explored was its tendency to lead me off the beaten track. It took me to remote areas of the park that were not often ventured by the average walker. This sense of exploration and the feeling of being at one with nature were truly invigorating.
However, it's essential to note that the Beacons Way does require some navigation skills. Waymarking can be limited, especially in the open hill and moorland sections. I found myself relying on maps, compass, and GPS to stay on course. While it added a level of challenge, it also heightened the sense of adventure and self-reliance.
As I made my way through this remarkable trail, I couldn't help but feel a deep connection to the land and its history. John Sansom's vision to present this beautiful part of Wales in the best possible light had truly come to fruition. Every step I took was a step closer to understanding and appreciating the natural wonders of the Brecon Beacons.
In the end, the Beacons Way was not just a hike; it was an immersive journey through a landscape that left an indelible mark on my soul. It was a reminder of the rewards that await those willing to put in the effort and explore the less-trodden paths. The Beacons Way is an experience that every adventurer should seek out, a chance to discover new vistas and new experiences while being surrounded by the pristine beauty of Wales.

Me too. I love going back there even after I’ve had some time in Snowdonia or the Lakes. It’s my nearest set of hills so need to make the most of the area (still a 4 hour drive though 🤣)! Hi Mark, what a brilliant watch a great edit that put over story of your adventure perfectly. It is very tough hiking in that area and I hiked around there for the first time a couple of years ago but like you say the view into the valleys are the best in the country. I was surprised to see how many miles you managed. We have the yellow top posts here in Leicestershire ,every single style and gate has one and as far as I know It started here about 30 years ago. They take footpaths quite seriously here in Leicestershire which is great and there is a good culture of local walking. Anyway I love to watch a good adventure so will continue with the rest of your trip. ATB and TFS 🏕️👍

G'day Mark. before you go on another multiday hike, wear an wide brim hat as well as an unbrella as they can be used to chatch rainwater, 2 an 3 liter bladder would allso help with extending your water supply. Stay well. keep safe out on the trail. Gerard.

Superb start bro. Up top with the Skirrid views - can't argue with that. I Gotta say I always knock om doors if I need too. People are generally kind when it comes to water. There is plenty of water around the Black Mountains however - all you need is a filter. Your table mountain each time was the Sugar Loaf, which you were walking around but all good - you're on a trail unfamiliar and it's a good one with fine conditions perhaps to fine with the heat. A lovely pitch in the end - what was the tent? Well, hats - good going. All the best. Mark

Before you plan your next long distance hike, invest in an 3 liter bladder, and then just refill your water bottle and drop in a couple of electrolyites to help refresh yourself. Gerard.
