Dr. Ambedkar Vegetable Market Yard, commonly known as the Bowenpally Market Yard, was originally established in 1965 at Monda Market and later relocated to Bowenpally in 2002.
The Hyderabad Bowenpally vegetable market has taken an innovative step towards sustainable development by utilizing vegetable waste to generate electricity and biogas, showcasing an exemplary waste recycling initiative.
The electricity produced from this waste conversion process is used to illuminate the market, while the biogas serves as an eco-friendly and cost-effective substitute for LPG, benefiting various vegetable vendors in their stalls. The plant generates approximately five hundred units of electricity and thirty kilograms of biofuel from the collected waste, with the entire plant setup costing around two to three crore.
The design and layout of the Biomethanation plant responsible for this waste-to-biofuel and electricity transformation were executed by Ahuja Engineering Services under the guidance of Dr. A Gangagno Kao, the chief scientist of CSIR-IICT.
The Bio-methanation process involves converting organic vegetable waste into biogas through anaerobic conditions using microorganisms. First, the waste is shredded and transformed into a slurry, which is then placed in large containers or pits where the conversion process takes place.
With around 150 vegetable vendors operating in the market, the electricity generated by the plant significantly benefits the area. It powers 120 street lights, 170 shops, and cold storage facilities. The introduction of this initiative has led to a substantial reduction in the electricity bill, cutting it down to almost half of its previous amount, which used to be around 3 to 3.5 lakhs.
The success of this venture relies on the collective responsibility of the people living around the market. When the market faces a shortage of vegetable waste, nearby households and markets contribute their vegetable waste to sustain the initiative, fostering a sense of community involvement.
Beyond the economic advantages, this project has positively impacted the lives of the less privileged vegetable vendors, enabling them to light up their stalls at a relatively lower cost. The initiative has also raised awareness among the vendors about sustainable practices, encouraging them to adopt environmentally friendly methods in their daily operations.
The Bowenpally Vegetable Market's endeavor to use vegetable waste for electricity and biogas exemplifies a remarkable approach towards sustainable waste management and renewable energy utilization, setting an inspiring example for others to follow.
