Old minecraft is very nostalgic, but for me, playing older versions allows me to be less worried about all the "stuff" and clutter that the hundreds of new blocks, items and entites being added every update. I found a sweet spot in 1.8.9, where it's new enough to have all the blocks I could need for building and creativity, but old enough to not feel convoluted. In the quest to add more and more to Minecraft, Mojang swept away what made the game so good in the first place, simplicity.

When they introduced villagers and enchanting I started spending more time taking care of stupid villagers and trying to get the perfect enchantments than I was building and exploring. Going back to versions before those features were introduced is like sweet relief. I feel like I'm playing my way again.

Agreed, I play 1.8.1 because I enjoy the more lonely and abandoned feel the world has, with all the old mineshafts, strongholds, desert temples, etc. I enjoy creating my own head canon for the world I play on. My main world is this amplified world with these massive mountains that resemble giant creatures frozen in stone.

Great Analysis. Being in the early years of college, it's safe to say that this is all completely true. We all go back to what we once used to be. A kid. And our thirst of nostoglia isn't purely for memories, but is the desire to be a kid again, since we can't ever wind the clock backwards.

So true, when I go in old versions, theres that empty feeling, due to the version Im playing being so long ago, and the fact that most players moved on to the more recent versions

The fact that dungeons were the only artificial structures generated in the old versions before Beta 1.8 used to give them a very mysterious and errie feeling. Like you know that there must have been someone who built them, but you don't know who or what because there are absolutely no other traces or hints besides dungeons left of who built them. The dungeons, along with the zombies and skeletons, which must have been humans at some point always gave Minecraft an unexplained postapocalyptic vibe. Nowadays with all the new generated structures, villagers, piglins, the end etc. Minecraft has a lot more lore. While this made it more interesting and complex, it also feels less mysterious nowadays.
@Greenlit

Much more is explained to you in modern Minecraft. To counter this though, I think they’ve done an excellent job at keeping parts of the Deep Dark and Ancient Cities mysterious. That portal looking thing in the center still hasn’t been explained

Yeah. It's a shame this atmosphere was lost. It wouldn't have been hard to add more content, whilst retaining this 'post-apocalyptic' and abandoned vibe. I mean, Abandoned Mineshafts were added, and, imo, worked perfectly. It retained the ominous atmosphere of a civilisation lost to time. Then came villages... the worst thing to happen to Minecraft's atmosphere. And then the flood gates opened.

The simplicity of old Minecraft and the feelings of playing it for the first time a kid is something that can never be replicated, and it is something that doesn’t need to be. It will always have that special place in all of our hearts, as one of the most influential and important experiences many of us have experienced as a milestone in our lives, and that many have experienced well after us. For me personally, there is nothing that will bring me more nostalgia then getting home from the pool, and hopping on the Xbox 360 to play Minecraft with my younger brother. Those memories are some that I cherish more than anything because of how simple it was to play in a small limited world, having to come up with stories and plot lines to keep us entertained before dinner time rolled about. It’s one of those feelings that you can’t ever really replicate, and I’m glad I got the pleasure to go through it. This game really did grow up with our generation, and since we can access the older versions, we are very lucky to be a select few that can actively relive our memories through modern technology, and that’s something I find absolutely beautiful.

Old minecraft was anything BUT loneliness. At least it was for me. Back then there were always so many friends to play with. Every time I log on by a new day, there was always something newly added during the time I was gone, a silly sign placed by some friend who played while I was out, expanded structure, etc etc. The world was full of fresh traces everywhere left by friends. Now, there are only two friends who just barely playing it. Mostly just me. I used to hate "cloud tree" so much back in the days and now I even miss them very much now. Just about anything that isn't done by me. Making me very sad 😭😭😭

At least to me, nostalgia is a very minor part of it. I started playing on legacy console edition, I think it was 2017. I actually still have the legacy console edition, and I really like it too, it feels like it's designed to be played with your friends. But I've recently started playing beta 1.7.3, and it might be my favorite version to play. And sure, there is a little bit of nostalgia too, there's some things in it that I remember from legacy console edition, and especially nostalgic to me are all the songs C418 made for Minecraft (though the songs also have a nostalgic vibe to them). But it's mostly the lack of intelligent life combined with you being able to do basically anything. When you can accomplish anything, but you are the only living being in the world that can accomplish anything, you'll feel lonely.

I didn't play Minecraft as a kid, my parents pretty much banished me and my sisters from the internet, so I only got Minecraft for the first time recently. Yet still, in a funny way, old Minecraft feels nostalgic to me too in a way. It sure feels very 2010 in a lot of ways that I can't explain, and modern Minecraft feels very present of where I am now in life - exciting, but also overwhelming at times. I have a 1.20.82 Bedrock world and also an Alpha world, and I play on both a lot for the different feelings. Great video btw!

Nostalgia isn't missing what used to be, but rather what could have been if things kept going the same way. It is a sadness about an alternate reality which didn't happen yet could have happened. It is a longing for the contingencies that cannot be anymore.

I discovered minecraft back in 2009 and still visit it from time to time, especially the older alpha/beta versions. Although minecraft isn't the game some of us knew from years and years ago. It's a reminder of the good old days you talk about. Things you touched on in your video such as the first night is something that has stuck with me for years. I still remember exactly where I was and how scared I was lol. I think what you said at the end of your video, "somewhere out there, there's a kid experiencing a different "minecraft"" speaks volumes about the next generation of individuals who will find "their minecraft", something that a few years down the line will remind them of the good ol' days that we are reliving in the moment currently. Anyways great video!

Every little new thing I discovered back then was a huge deal to me. Also not knowing everything was both scary and exciting. I still feel that way today, but there just isn't much that I don't know anymore in regards to Minecraft and gaming as a whole. I wish I could just block at all news of future Minecraft updates for the next 10 years and then play it blind. That could be an amazing experience. (Or it could suck based on the quality of the updates we've been getting recently)

Great video! More videos need to be in this style, and it really captured my childhood memories. I probably like modern Minecraft more than old Minecraft, but I definitely agree that the old game had an atmosphere that’s now really nostalgic, despite its sometimes unsettling feeling. It makes me miss playing Minecraft Pocket Edition, because even though there was a general lack of features, sometimes the limitation made it even better, especially when they added something new. It had such a unique feeling compared to the more polished modern Minecraft. But maybe that’s just the nostalgia clouding my judgement a little bit.

Either way, we mostly kept up with it because it was fun.

old minecraft genuinely brings back the fun in the game. i had this old world intended to be an smp i hosted on aternos titled version smp, the whole gimmick meant to switch versions periodically using (hopefully) the same world throughout. the world started on 1.7.2, which i had to use a separate client from the normal one because the normal client would crash every time i tried going that low. regardless, i started the smp and nobody logged on. not once, nobody besides me. the real memories i had with it were when my school was virtual during covid for a few days and instead of paying attention in class (the work we did barely required any paying attention to do) i just grinded out that world. it was the most fun i’d had playing minecraft because it was a version i had never even played before. sadly, i couldn’t play much after that because we went back to school soon after and aternos deletes server backups after a certain amount of time passes, so the world is basically lost, but man, the things i’d do to have a backup of that world on my computer, just so i can walk around it and bask in the nostalgia i never experienced

@@Strideo1 I disagree, if you mean that they're op Obviously minecraft would've been fun if it had more interaction but i actually think that how the game is right now makes it so that you're able to do anything, farm anything, so that u have full control of the world however you want. It's a sandbox! ofc, some legacy versions like 1.8.9 are still goated because of the pvp for instance (1.7.10 in that case) but that doesnt mean the current game is bad, it can still be enjoyed somewhat. I wish exploration was deeper though, definitely.

@@Nelex5000 I didn't start off disliking the villagers but the more I've thought about them the less I've liked them over the years. I really don't like how helpless and stupid they are. Like they can't fix anything on their own and they just start disappearing down holes or getting lost as soon as you arrive. Like, there's no balance to their ecology, they will die off if you don't intervene on their behalf despite them ostensibly having a self sufficient village when you find them. Despite them being helpless and dumb they constantly make that annoying and condescending "Hhhhhrrmmm." noise. It would be different if they had good reason to be smug but they don't. I also don't like that the player can treat villagers like livestock without consequence. The villagers can't fight back or refuse to trade with you if you put them in a massive villager concentration camp. These are supposed to be sapient beings who live in houses. The relationship between them and the player should be more complex than just allowing the player to do whatever they please with them if they're truly people according to the game's logic. Other than that I just think there's way too many villages now. You just find them everywhere and it makes the world of Minecraft feel too populated in my estimation. I actually liked the vast vast wilderness with no signs of civilization to be found and the villagers took that aspect away from us.
@macattack9078
@macattack9078 2 ай бұрын
What I hate about villagers most is their trading, the trading they do is overpowered by a lot and after so long you don’t ever need to go mining again because you have all the trades you need to thrive, from food to armor and enchantment books what reason do you have to go mining anymore? Iron farms can be created relatively simply and you will have endless iron supply. Automatic farms that collect endless amounts of items is my main problem with modern Minecraft, automation makes the game stale, and while yes it is a sandbox, survival isn’t supposed to be creative. What is the point in continuing if you just have to afk at your farms all the time? What’s the point if nothing can hurt you anymore? What’s the point if the only thing you have left to do is build? Building is good and all, but I always found the balance of mining, exploring, and building to be essential to keeping the game fresh. I always enjoy manually collecting everything I use. I just don’t see the point in turning a survival world into a creative one, some people like that, but I don’t, it just makes the game pointless to me, it makes every build I do mean more to me when I work hard to gather the resources for it by hand rather than waiting for them to be generated for me.

For me the old minecraft was better because of one this - spawn. Back when I joined minecraft in early beta (when you could play minecraft in browser), you spawned on sand blocks, usually next to ocean. Back then minecraft wikia was pretty empty and lacked lots of into so you had to try to figure it out by yourself. I believed that Steve was a shipwreck survivor that woke up at the beach of unknown, not discovered land. Was it in ancient times? Was it medieval? Was it modern? I don't know but I believe there was a storm, a ship crashed, steve lost conciousnes and memories and arrived at this mythologic land land trying to survive. Zombies, skeletons? Were those people who died? So people lived there? If yes, what happened to them? Are these tiny dungeons the last remains of their buildings? It was mysterious and every player had their own lore of this world

Is it just me or in recent times, more and more are leaning into playing the old versions of minecraft. It's a small community, but they're thriving

I loved Minecraft back then, and I love it now. It has evolved and grown, maybe it's not a simplistic game anymore but it's still a game I play single player and put 120 hours into it per-world

There are great reasons to play all versions of Minecraft. It’s nice that Mojang has given us the option to pick the versions we’d like to play.

I am getting to Sad whenever I am watching such videos. The video is perfect and beautiful But my soul plays the old world blues like it is the last song of his life. I always wanted to just live. Like in Minecraft. But I never realised till now, that in order to live you have to grow up first. From a child to an adult and than relearning how to be a child again. We will see where my songs lead me to

The feeling of emptiness comes from modern Minecraft for me. Everything is so full and bustling with items and things to do. Yet ironically at the same time it's just too much of a commitment to do them. Leaving it feeling empty and overburdened. Old Minecraft you had a sense of freedom and playability. You played to have fun. Nowadays Minecraft feels like you need to speedrun to play.

Now you see how Generation X feels when we go on and on about playing NES and SNES and Atari games.. you kids are experiencing what we experience, only with minecraft.. that nostalgia.. that wanting to go back and relive being a kid again.. before life became stressful and hard to manage... i play old console games for the same reason many of todays young adults play old Minecraft... But i didn't start playing Minecraft unti around 2020.. i was already far into adulthood.. As for the lonliness..even modern MC feels lonely to me.. but that's because i've got no one hanging out in the world with to play the game and do things with.. The world is vast and lonely and feels like it should be an MMO almost..

4:24 I don't think it's nostalgia that makes these versions scary. I'm pretty much still a kid (I'm in middle school) and I wish I would grow up in the 2000's. I'm literally trying to relive memories that I didn't have. I find it a little weird that I'm so obsessed with things that I know no one else in my age is and that I want to go back to times that I never lived through. probably no one will read this so idk why I'm typing this out so I guess thx for reading and this is a great video I'll check out more on your channel. (gosh I wrote a paragraph)

What do you think of the new 1.18/1.19 music? A lot of it somehow is able to tap into these melancholic lonely feelings for me. I play on a server with a 12 year old map and when I stumbled across sections of it made a decade ago with Raine playing, something struck me out of it. Fascinating feeling.

less is more, we wanted more toys to play with like more blocks and mobs like mods, to fuel our cretivity and have an advantage over other players experiences, now we just want our old familiar ones back because the world was simpler and sentimental, and even though we still have those old versions, in our minds they tend to feel like just a burning memory... but for me they burn with a yearn to be returned to but we need to move on past our feelings I played minecraft alone for most of my time on the xbox just to show people what I built or just share the majesty I felt in it, in my very own worlds to explore every nook and cranny of throughout 2 dimensions a unique custom world you can customize randomly generated infinity nothing else like it for a kid to run around in sure other games had something to hold onto like dialouge, leveling, an end game, but minecraft let you walk around all of those a place where you arent expected to do anything other than live and breathe life into a world is boring for some people when they get older without friends willing to dedicate the same for mutual admiration its not like minecraft demands it, but you get lost in expecting it from yourself, to perfect everything in an imperfect game, to compare to the internets experience and grandiose, when you should just be yourself and find your own way to be expressive in the game, which can be infinitely hard for some people these days feeling like everything is a limited time event, getting used to 10 minute shooting matches, speedrunning, or just grinding a million dollars through level after level, but its true, and just needs to take a little patience
