The GU Patrol is still as capable as it ever was. Interior aside, it's exterior design is ageing well. It still looks contemporary and comparable to modern day 4WDs. Nissan should have kept building it (alongside the Y62). It could have been Nissan's 70 Series.

Just discovered your channel mate. Love that area myself. You’re dead right that some of the crossings it’s half a car width between an easy crossing and a disaster. I drove one without walking last time I was there and next thing I was stuck in four foot of water on one side hung up on a boulder, and that gravelly sand on the other. It wasn’t nice as it was getting dark. Sucked water into the transfer and gearbox and did my alternator. Lesson learned!

One of the amazing things that stands out for me is how much the extra flex doesn't mean extra progress. In certain circumstances it does make a difference, but mostly it's just less wheels in the air and less pitching but no actual difference to progress. Sure, you can cherry pick data, but mostly there's not much meaningful difference other than better pose shots and a more level cab. There's no doubt that the Patrol is more capable but the gap between them is far smaller than you would expect. Two things that do make the huge difference is twin lockers versus single, and the courage to send it. CV's are not as weak on IFS vehicles as people think, so long as you have a bit of mechanical sympathy. I've never ever busted one despite doing a whole heap of crazy, but if you rely on momentum and bouncing stuff to get through it's inevitable that you will break them, especially if you run max lift.

With an auto try keeping constant revs and use left foot braking..like anything don't push it too hard for gearbox and brake temperatures but when mastered it helps a lot when having to vary speed but still keeping really responsive on the throttle as backing off in an auto seems to have a less responsive throttle when reapplying therefore getting a bouncing effect..it also dampens the suspension providing more traction when its starts bouncing and slipping..also building revs with the brake to load up the torque converter from a standing start to pop over steps..its a real credit to u guys doing tough tracks without breaking anything..really welldone

You should always make it a good habit when traversing bodies of water (irrespective of the water depth) to allow the vehicle in front to complete the traverse, before the vehicle behind follows. Safety first. 👍
@TylerThompson902 жыл бұрын
We do this on shallow crossings because it looks better on camera and we have always walked them first (to set up camera) so we know they are shallow. We don't do it on deeper ones. I don't see any danger in driving a shallow river crossing at the same time that we have walked first

On the hill it looks like you were struggling for traction and not at the fault of suspension, power, or line. The tyres look like they are not bagging out much, but it's hard to tell through the camera. Perhaps the rubber compound is a bit firm, or just a bit less air... not sure, but in some places you were spinning wheels where I would have expected you to have traction...
@TylerThompson902 жыл бұрын
It's just one of those things that doesn't show up on camera and you won't see unless you specifically look for the tyre with more weight on it. I was at 18PSI and these tyres bag more than any other brand I've had. We all saw what happened on the first episode of this series when I went lower lol

lol relax. I never said the MUX wasn't modified, it has some basic mods and definitely wouldn't call it 'heavily modded' (basic suspension upgrade, slightly bigger off-road tyres, rear locker which most 4wds come standard with these days). It is a family wagon a family would take touring with some basic mods.
