Cinematographer Anthony Hardwick covers the challenges faced during filming on location for the show "Ballers". During this segment from "Sight, Sound & Story: Behind the Lens," Anthony talks about the advantages of working on-site, financial considerations, crafting immersive experiences, and depicting the allure of glamour in television productions like "Ballers."
Director/Director of Photography Anthony Hardwick grew up in NYC, the son of fashion designer Cathy Hardwick. He was interested in photography from an early age, and by the 7th grade, he immersed himself in all the classes he could at the two high schools he attended, Fieldston in NYC, and Choate. He thought he was destined to become a surgeon, and that photography would be relegated to just being a serious hobby. While studying sciences for his pre-med major in his Freshman year, he took an elective course in experimental filmmaking, which altered the course of his future, and he changed his major to film production at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
While studying at Tisch, he gained his first on-set experience as a P.A. on the first season of the television series, "Pee Wee’s Playhouse." After several jobs at various NYC production companies, he landed a coveted job at Camera Service Center, which allowed him to learn all about various 35mm and 16mm camera systems, meet all the working camera assistants in NYC, and join the union.
After a few years of working as a camera assistant on high-profile commercials, music videos, and concerts, Anthony started shooting and building his reputation as a documentary, music video, and commercial cameraman. Anthony moved to Los Angeles, CA in 2001, and transitioned to operating on scripted feature films and TV series, which included "Coach Carter," "Peaceful Warrior," and "Mean Creek." In 2004, Anthony shot the "Borat" feature film, for director Todd Phillips (who left the film towards the beginning of production), and Larry Charles who took over directing.
Since then Anthony has filmed numerous television series, including "Shameless," "Dead to Me," "The Flight Attendant," "Shooter," "The Last Man On Earth," "Ballers," and feature films including "Bruno," "Religious," and "Fantasy Football." He was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Cinematography for his work on "Ballers."
