I explored West Ham's old stadium location, Upton Park in London.
lottify.co.uk/ - Discount code "FOOTY"
The Boleyn Ground as it was sometimes known was the historic home of West Ham United from 1904 - 2016. The Hammers spent some great years there, but how has the closure effected the area in general?
WHUFC now play at the London stadium but I wish they had kept and redeveloped Upton Park!

I’m a football romantic from Cologne, Germany. I love West Ham and visited the old ground in the summer. I was shocked to see that there was nothing to commemorate the old ground. It’s such a shame. Hopefully something will be put up in the future. It would be a shame to lose the history so irresponsibly. Btw you should visit 1. FC Köln some day! Love the videos!! 🐐⚒

One of my favourite recent memories of Upton Park was Millwall, League Cup in 2009. It's a real rivalry, nothing manufactured and authentic as it comes. An amazing atmosphere that night, evil feel, and unique in English football. Rivals the intensity of Rangers and Celtic. The Boleyn Pub was always rammed. Sticky floors, long queues, singing area and a sink full of piss. I miss the old girl.

As a Chelsea fan. This was are favourite away game Upton park. It had roasted peanuts horse shit queen's market. Kids sitting on tower blocks. The bill garner welcome party. Black eyes. Great atmosphere. Chicken run. Next to us. No mobiles. Good banter. And pure dislike of each other but in some chalk and cheese way. On England away games a mutual respect. Now we have waxed beards. Great video. As a West Ham fan I’ll never not be sad about leaving Upton Park. Doesn’t surprise me the owners of the club have not taken care of preserving the area the old ground was on. Irresponsible for no signage to show the centre circle, not showing where the bench is, etc. I’ll never go back there as it would tarnish my great memories of that place. Long live the Boleyn. ⚒

West Ham did well out of that move to the London Stadium. A purpose built stadium that cost them virtually nothing to convert for football purposes plus the money they got for Upton Park. Shocking how they weren't allowed to develop Upton Park for football, but virtually unlimited construction for flats was granted, but then, why would you be too concerned when there's a 50,000+ stadium just up the road ready to move into for virtually nothing?

Proper FOOTBALL Stadium near Pie and Mash Shops. The Market, Working Mans Clubs, and Pubs and now in the middle of nowhere. As West Ham are doing well and the years pass the Club will eventually receive a "pass" for what they did. I am sure they could have come to some arrangement with the local Council but the area is very different culturally and ethnically now so not the same endearment. West Ham fans have been ripped off, a big soul of the club has gone, I had the pleasure of visiting once the last time my team played there in 2011 and it was class proper ground suited the size of the club too no plastics just raw passion the noise was brilliant

Quite a unique video even by your standards ! Loved the visit to the pub and felt for you when the memorial garden was closed ... us "groundspotters" have all had those moments ! Have to say that although I am definitely not a WHU fan or even a Londoner, I have "experience" of the area and you are a brave man to wander round there with your cameras ... take care ...

In all my years of being an armchair football fan, It wasn't til the final game at Upton Park that I'd ever heard of the term Boleyn in regards to West Ham.

Great video and as a football fan it's sad to see clubs losing their identity to an extent when they leave a stadium behind.... One thing I love about being a Palace fan is the fact we are still at Selhurst Park... I genuinely hope we never leave!

So your question for today , my friend. When I visited THe Whitehorse Lane End several times in 1967 what did that end look like bewhind the goal just 54 tears ago :) I saw them play Wolves on the final day with 41,000 there against already promoted Wolves and their 10,000 fans. Against champions Coventry and losing 2/1 to Millwall. So what did that end look like opposite the great Holmesdale Road terraces? :)_

@@Isleofskye I can tell you if you like IoS. The Whitehorse end is where I used to sell "penny on the ball" and later "Jackpot" tickets, up until 1965 as a schoolboy.

I like "The Skye Boat Song" , My Friend. So you remember the grass bank that we all rolled down when Millwall won there 2/1 on the 25th March 1967 ? :)

@@Isleofskye I remember the grass banking very well. From memory, it was terracing for about half way, maybe two thirds up, then the grass, all the way round from the Holmesdale end, along the Park Road side, to the Whitehorse end. The floodlights, when I first attended, were mounted on a series of towers, mirroring those that still remain on the main stand roof, along the Park Road side. I don`t remember "The Skye Boat Song" though.

The main attractions of the London Stadium are its capacity and its transport links. The Boleyn pub looks wworth a visit. By the way, that's Clyde Best, not Eusebio. Local pubs, cafes and shops must have taken a huge hit when West Ham moved to the London Stadium. West Ham used to have some great players; the late Jimmy Greaves played for them, along with Redknapp and Lampard, Bobby Moore, and Trevor Brooking. There's a video on KZbin of a 1971 game between Manchester City and West Ham. Worth watching not just for a fantastic goal by Ronnie Boyce but also to see the state of the pitch. I enjoyed this videoo and you've got a new subscriber.

I would ask Leyton Orient fans about that. Wasn't there are some rules and regulations that a new ground could not be within a certain distance of another one ? Yet the rules were bent so that West Ham could play at this Stadium despite it being so near to Leyton Orient.

It’s ironic that in a country which boasts about its glorious Traditions with statues & preserved buildings has little time or space for places & events in working class or daily life history . It’s the same with ground names such as 100 years of Dean Court being dumped ☹️

It’s a shame that iconic clubs move to new stadiums. All lot of the history and atmosphere and everything with the surrounding area are lost.but the old stadiums are too small , and most can’t be enlarged due to nearby properties ( apart from spurs) I suppose that’s what’s called progress.

Am I the only one who saw the picture at 14:56 and the shot at 15:46 and thought that the balcony in the background might be the balcony the picture was taken from (Same fence and building beneath it). I might be wrong tho. You also see the structure of the stadium he was walking by in the first picture.

Might not be the most glamorous of locations but you need to come to the Boro and visit where Ayresome Park was compared to the Riverside. Also you can literally follow in the footsteps of Brian Clough as he was a local lad he would take the short walk through Albert Park from his home in Valley Road carrying his boots over his shoulder to get to training at Ayresome Park. There is a statue of him in the park and you can find a few hidden gems in and around where Ayresome Park was if you look close enough. While you are in the North East you could even check out where Sunderland's Roker Park was, or Darlington's Feethams stadium if you really must 😏

Grounds become generational connections that family members and friends share whilst supporting their team. New stadiums have no history until they finally have it. 50 years time most fans who went to the old stadium will be old or gone and their descendents will have history there. Every stadium will be objectionable in some way as there is no perfect stadium, how it is adapted and what people experience there makes a good ground with history.
