Exploring the stunning villages of Assos and Fiskardo in Kefalonia

My wife and I holidayed in Kefalonia 24 years ago this month. As a birthday present from my wife, we hired a scooter and rode miles and miles to Argostolion to see, what was billed as the first public screening of Captain Corelli's Mandolin, showed at Argostolion Cinema. In the audience were many of the locals who had appeared as extras in the film. The only movie I've ever seen shown in a cinema with two intervals. We were enchanted by Kefalonia and thought we'd like to move there some day. We moved to Portugal instead, 2 years later. I honestly believe though, were it not for that holiday, we wouldnt have started the train of thoughts and events that led us to sell our Hampshire home and move to Portugal in October 2002. We've been here ever since. The best decision we ever made. Thank you Kefalonia for planting the first seed that fired our imaginations, I doubt we would be here today without that wonderful holiday.

@Yorkies-Travel we were booked to go there this year but Easyjet cancelled our flights and we ended up in Kos. Planning trying again next year.

Awww that’s a shame. Kos is lovely too but I think Kefalonia pips it to the post! The beaches are nicer in Lassi x

For a clean and basic hotel near everything, I’d recommend hotel Lorenzo. There are lots of apartments too like Despina apartment that we stayed at, just make sure they aren’t situated up the hill, unless you intend on hiring a car for the full duration of your holiday, then it doesn’t matter 😁 x
