The Model Y has been a huge success for Tesla. Despite being introduced after the Model S, X, and 3, the Model Y immediately became the best-selling and one of the most popular luxury vehicles in the world. Nonetheless, this little electric SUV hasn't altered much since we originally tested it in 2020.
Tesla will release an improved Model 3 in 2024, and as the Model Y is the SUV version of the tiny sedan, we anticipate that the same updates will be made to the Model Y. And the upgrade can't come fast enough; Tesla now faces competition from both mass-market brands like the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Volkswagen ID4, as well as conventional luxury automakers like the Genesis GV70 Electric, Audi Q4 Sportback E-Tron, and Cadillac Lyriq.
Expect the 2025 Model Y to begin with minor improvements to the outward appearance, such as updated headlights, taillights, and a sleek snout design. We anticipate similar changes to the Model 3 Highland, such as narrower panel gaps and acoustic insulating glass for a quieter interior. Can Model Y receive what Model S and Model We believe it's possible.
Tesla also intends to further streamline production in order to save costs. Hopefully, buyers will never come across examples of redundancies being eliminated to save money, and let us hope that those savings are not passed on to consumers, but rather shareholders.
We love the Model Y Performance so much that when we first drove it, we labeled it "the most convincing American sport luxury SUV ever." That is not to imply that the ordinary Long Range variant is a slacker; we measured 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds, just 0.6 seconds slower than the Model Y Performance.
MotorTrend tested power and acceleration figures for cars released before 2024. Tesla is likely to release a more athletic model of the Model Y in 2024, similar to the Model GT.
The Model Y Long Range and Model Y Performance have the same 82.0 kWh battery and dual-motor AWD. The Long Range variation can travel 310 miles on a single charge, whereas the Y Performance Model has a range of only 285 miles. While the Model Y can charge up to 250 kW, we received varied results.
