I owned an 85 Mitsubishi Colt sedan and a 1990 Mitsubishi Magna TP sedan.....both built in Adelaide. One of the best looki cars made in Australia, in my opinion, was the 1977 to 1980 Chrysler (Mitsubishi) Sigma SE. In 1977...........it looked stunning!

Back in the day Imlachs in Springvale was called Centre Road Wreckers and weren't self serve but before they sold to Imlachs they started doing self service. There also was a wreckers across the road where Mainfreight are now. Me and mates used ride our push bikes down the drains next to Imlachs and sneek in at the rear of the yard anf look at cars. Imlachs started off in Braeside on Boundary Road called Sigma Wreck then they moved to Clayton Road then to Centre Road. My old boss is good friends with the Imlach family.

I kept my local wreckers in business buying diffs and gearboxes for my XE. I did so much business there the owner who also had a towing business, didn’t charge me for a tow for about 15 years. I had an XE with a Crossflow I built, making a dynod 360rwhp, and ended up running a 5 speed supra box and a 3.55:1 LSD doing a mid 13 sec 1/4. I surprised many VT’s which were the new car then. May or may not have also easily outran the police vehicles of the time. I’m a Ford guy through and through, I have 3 BA tonners, a SX Envy Territory and a XB GS Fairmont with a 351 4V.

Holden vehicle manufacturing in Melbourne was down in Dandenong (off Princes Highway) and ended in the mid 90s assembling Corollas and Novas although earlier it was assembling Camiras and Commodores of the VB/VC vintage - maybe even later.

New Zealand once manufactured all Japanese and English cars locally, then the government dropped all tariffs on imported vehicles. This killed the local manufacturing market as an import became cheaper than an equivalent locally produced vehicle, but it also meant every vehicle became cheap to purchase and New Zealand became one of the biggest importers of JDM vehicles. Evo, gtr, sti, gtir, gtx, gtst, gt4, vr4, RS Legacy, Legnum, autech stagea, etc etc were all plentiful and dirt cheap.

Bit of trivia for you, back in the day there was an open wheel formula named Formula Holden, where they ran the 3.8L. Toyota entered a car and swapped all of the parts on the engine with a Holden logo over for the Toyota counterpart, most noticeably the rocker covers.

Regards Ecotec 3800 vs Buick 3800. I don't know about technical differences but I do know the Buick made a much nicer sound than the boringly quietened down Ecotec. They improved on smoothness and sound (not as nice as the Buick though) by the VX in 2001. I believe Holden tamed the jackrabbit take off the Buicks were known for. The Ecotec seems to have more high end power than the very low end torque emphasis of the Buick.

I usually have a Camry for work, but currently I’m in a stupid big Hiace as I’m doing a bigger run and need more space, but I hate Camrys and I was given one of my companies oldest cars, a 12yo Toyota Camry with 180k on the clock. The AC isn’t cold enough, and it’s incredibly uninspiring, but, in terms of a reliable economical vehicle, it’s definitely that. They’ve threatened they’re giving me a spanking new Hybrid shortly and I’m seriously thinking of buying the Camry because I have 2 kids and all my utes a 2 seaters.
