I don't think many people really understand how much R&D costs for a car. The VW mk7 Golf costs €1.8 billion to develop from scratch. Granted, the 3.0 CSL is a different project scale, but let me put out some numbers. Ferrari regularly makes one-off special projects based on regular cars like 458/599/488 etc. Most are just different body panels, retaining headlights and still a lot resemblence to the donor car. A one-off SP-car would cost up to $5 million. Another example, the Bugarti La Voiture Noir, a one-of-one car, costs €14 million more than the Chiron it was based on. In terms of changes relative to the donor car, the CSL is pretty extensive, and would cost in the tens of millions. Split the R&D cost into 50 cars, and you get an extra $300k+ into the price tag, that is before the car is even produced. Is it worth it? To most people, probably not. But the fact is, 50 people decided to put their money down for the 3.0 CSL to exist, and that's all that matters. Otherwise this car would just be a concept stored in BMW's archive.

You can quite literally get a fully custom, fully carbon fiber front bumper for any vehicle for around $4-10k, sometimes less. Never mind if you decided to make it yourself. $35k for that front bumper is stupidly overpriced. I get it’s rare, but if you’re into customizing cars and make a near average salary, cars like this are unrealistic and a waste of money. It’s not even that fast… I enjoyed the feature though. Good job Larry, just sharing my thoughts.

It’s expensive because of the tolerances, tooling, and low volume. That $10k body kit will require a lot of trimming and adjusting to look good. A $35k bumper will fit the first time you put it on. Yes it is expensive though 😅

Never had any issues or heard of anyone who purchased body parts for a R35 from Japan that had fitment issues. For example a full dry carbon hood from TS costs around 5k which fits completely flush. 35k for a bumper FROM JAPAN is just a scam man. Not only that he literally state the bumper is a touring car, not a track car. Lmao...

@@twistedbdo5755if you understand anything about economics, you’d understand that making 1000’s of the same part makes it significantly less expensive and also allows for refining over time. There are 50 of these cars in the world and the carbon is all handmade.

@@cgcrosby2 Alot of carbon parts are hand made for one when buying from a reputable shop from Japan. There's legit videos on this... Which Is also why it takes 6 months to 2 years ETA to receive (im talking about drop shipped. They are typically made after order). I have purchase a custom carbon splitter used by a shop famous for r35 time attack. The part isn't even being publicly listed. I'll tell you it costed well under what you think it costs. Not only that it's TRACK tested, not some touring peice... There's probably less than 5 of them made. You clearly have 0 experience dealing with aftermarket parts from Japan. In terms of my top secret example for the hood, I'd also be very surprised if there was even close to 1k full top secret r35 aero kits sold.

The Z8 is firmly into collector territory now, where originality will be king. It always got mixed reviews, the consensus IIRC being that it felt like it didn't know whether to be a boulevard cruiser or a proper sports car, and ended up not really being either. The (stock) looks have aged supremely well, though. I'm not sure we will be able to say the same about that rather strange-looking CSL Hommage...

The 3.0 CSL looks good, but when you see the car this new version is based on, the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage R, it's extremely watered down. The Hommage R had the flares actually come loose and go into the bodywork, which was insane. A pity BMW never released that car as it was to the public. They allowed Supercar Blondie to check it out and drive it though.

Really love this car but $1m (850k) price is just a hype tool for BMW. All mechanical parts are shared with the “regular” M4 CSL and the transmission comes from the standard M4, meaning they asking +700k for a pretty carbon fibre body? They could have at least thrown some GT3 racecar parts under that plastic engine cover.

(Re-)engineering a car is expensive. Simple stuff we ignore like indicator lights can cost multiple six figures to homologate, OEM-quality body panel molds, even for plastic, is multiple 5 figures. Add that to the design, engineering, and testing cost, it costs millions to do a simple job like this, that is before the car is produced. The 3.0 CSL is produced hand-made off the production line, which means it takes a lot more man hours. Even let's say it costs a mere $15 mil to develop the 3.0 CSL (a number I made up, mind you the mk7 Golf was estimated to cost almost $2 bil to develop from scratch), split into 50 cars, that's an R&D cost of $300k per car. Our regular cars are kept to a low price simple because OEMs make hundreds of thousands of them, so the R&D cost per car is only a few percent of the MSRP. Production lines are also ultra-efficient at churning out cars, even as fast a new car every 2 minutes. Compare that to hand-made cars which would be tough to finish one per day. The labor cost per car is just not comparable. That is just a part of the explanation, we still don't know how much profit margin BMW takes, but I doubt that BMW simply takes a 40% margin on the CSL.

Power isnt everything. This car is almost entirely bespoke body etc. Its a collectors car. I just think its a shame it looks nothing like the concept version of it. It would have looked sick with actual vents on the hood and the arches actually beeing somewhat detached. Also those more aggressive headlights looked amazing. Now it just looks like they had to plug those holes for the production version, and the body lines make no sense anymore and kind of look like a cheap knock off body kit. But in the end, all that doesnt matter to us as wed never be able to buy one even if we wanted to. For the collectors it will have its value and rarity and thats all that kind of matters for it.
