I’m impressed with the cleanliness of the streets and storefronts. I have so many thoughts and questions. How do the police or emergency medics know where to go inside such tight quarters? Where do they all go potty and wash? Why do so many just wander aimlessly without apparent purpose? Wires everywhere…where are the meters or who pays the electric bill? How bad is crime like petty theft in these areas? I kept looking for gutters and street drains but didn’t see any. I’m very curious about the underground infrastructure.

If there is an emergency, friends or family will run you to hospital. Its pretty rare for an ambulance service to go to a home. There are washrooms in every home....just as any normal house. Everyone there has a purpose. This is a holy city where many visit the many temples because many believe if you die there than you complete your samsara. There are meters on every home just calculate electricty...just like your homes in the west. There are drainage pipes below the homes that run sewage and water out...just like the west. Petty theft it not as bad as youd like to think.

The city is the constituency of the Indian PM Modi ... He himself launched Many infrastructure and redevelopment projects in this Holy city! This is why the city has been transformed in the last 8-9 years!

Police Officials posted there usually are well versed with the lanes as there is a important temple nearby too among other landmarks, For medics in case of emergency the family will rush to nearest hospital or the ambulance would be there on the main road, if needed First Responders will go on foot with the required equipments basic ones. There is a drainage pipe for the waste. Meters i assume would be inside the house or at a common point marked with identification no. At 7:15 you can see a manhole cover if you look closely

I have never been to Varanasi, but sorely, desperately wish to visit as a Hindu. I am based in the United States and have travelled many cities of India to date. Only to Varanasi not yet ... it's next on my list!

One should keep in mind that it's the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world... It needs lots of work in regards to order and cleanliness, otherwise it's a unique and beautiful vibe.

Just say 'No' or ignore completely and keep walking. Don't smile. Don't donate. When you stop and and try to be polite, then situation gets worse. Never talk to them in sentences. That's enough motivation for them to keep chasing you. But these people are not everywhere. Occasionally you might find them. Behave like you live there. I'm Indian. I'm from South of India. I behave like this in every indian city. Usually it's shop keepers, rickshaw drivers and religious scammers who Chases you. Ignore and walk. India is a relatively safe nation. Southern states and Himalayan regions are much safer and less chaotic. If you are India for the first time then start from South. Land in Cochin (Kerala) or Chennai (Tamil Nadu) Limit your first trip to just these 2 states. Plenty of mega temples in Tamilnadu and natural beauty in Kerala.
