Damn I miss just walking around Japan. Taking the train every sunday morning from Roppongi to Yokohama was amazing seeing a city that huge that quiet. And speaking about feeling safe, at that time the bars in Roppongi would finally be closing and nearly every week we'd see people passed out on the metro, they drop their wallet or purses and random strangers would grab their wallets and place it where they wouldn't forget them. It was amazing to actually see complete strangers worry about the wellness of someone else for no reason other than it was the right thing to do.

Awesome! Chuo-Ku was where I stayed when I worked in Tokyo one summer back in the day. Lots of places I knew very well. There were actually some great and fairly cheap small restaurants and Izakaya between Chuo dori in Ginza and the road that runs past the Yaesu side of Tokyo station. Plus Yurakucho station area had plenty of nice little places as well. I bought my Tokyo map book and my kanji dictionary at Yaesu Book center also. The arcade level with all the shops and stuff below Tokyo station on the Yaesu side is huge. The best Katsu curry I ever had was from a place down there. I wonder if it is still in business. I look forward to the next episode. Tsukiji is pretty amazing! :)

Re. The "central point" marker, we have a similar system in London. Makes sense really, if you're heading to London and are seeing signs telling you you're x miles from London, that distance is measured from a central point, not just the point at which you hit the edge of the sprawling suburbs. London's marker is at Charing Cross. I would imagine the same goes for many other towns and cities, not only in the UK, but around the world.

I went to Tenmatsu in that area, pretty sure it's in the Chuo ward. It's a fancy tempura place that has bargain lunch sets. The chef cooks the tempura in front of you and serves it to you piece by piece. Definitely recommend. I had the set that including maguro don, it was amazing

When Kyde refers to a guide book for inspiration for all your excursions, I wish that you would name it or put it in the description. There are a lot of crappy guides, but having a reference from someone who has already tried it out (and whom you trust, ergo subscriber), it can help in planning one's travels, as soon as it is not irresponsible to do so. Love you guys!

Instantly recognized Nihonbashi from watching Kirin no Tsubasa. Sorry Kyde, that's not a dragon, but a kirin. Now, you might be saying to yourself "Wait, isn't kirin a giraffe?" It sure is! That's because back in the 15th century, when giraffes were brought to China, some people thought it was their ancient mythological creature, the kirin (qilin in Chinese), and the name just stuck. Fun fact, the kirin is seen as being the strongest of the mythological creatures, beating out even the mighty dragon.

Thanks! So glad you found us!! We try to get shots of the restaurant to establish what things look like, but it can be tricky as there are often other customers in the restaurants and they probably aren't keen on having a camera in their face while they are enjoying their meals. It's a balance we try really hard to maintain. Hope this makes sense! -E

Love these Ku videos and hope you guys get over to Ueno and explore around there. I usually stay in that area when I visit Japan and will be there again next March. Lots of cool places to explore and eat. I agree with you on Ginza being less lively than places like Omotesando although the neon looks awesome at night. Made the mistake of eating at a tempura place in Ginza that a guide book recommended and ended up paying over $100. Found out later you can get great tempura in places like Asakusa for less than a quarter of that price. Live and learn.

I love the "hotplate barf", haha. The ones with mochi are really really nice. When cooking you should make like wall with the vegetables, or like a well I guess, and then pour the batter into the middle of it and let it cook for a couple of minutes until unpleasantly gloopy(I mean, it never really looks not like barf). After that, mix it up and let it cook for maybe a couple more minutes. When eating, do not just scoop it up and eat it as is, but take a piece on the little spatula and then press it down on the teppan and drag it to make it crispy. Try it again sometime if you go and have okonomiyaki, most places serve both in Tokyo and you don't have to go to a speciality restaurant really :)

Here in Canada we don't have those paint balls, not that i've seen, but in the clothing stores some of them have clips on the clothing, and if you leave the store without removing them, they will dye the clothing and ruin it so you can't wear it or resell it. Also what was with that pretty intense music going on turing lunch? LOL at first I wasn't sure if you put the music in or not haha. the shine on the chocolates is probably from shellac
@geeell1917
@geeell1917 7 жыл бұрын
The shine on those almonds comes from a thin coat of edible carnauba wax, which is standardly used in almost all coated candies (like M&M's, Whoppers, Lemonheads, Nerds, gumballs, etc.) and many fresh fruits (apples or persimmons), to give them a shiny appearance, protect from moisture and is harmless to consume, but it has nothing to do with the quality of chocolates inside. In fact properly tempered, ultra high-quality chocolates can be glassy smooth and glossy if they come out of a smooth candy mold without anything added.

Hey Eric, have you ever run into any problems living in Japan with tattoos? I've heard they're frowned upon and people can give you a hard time about them.

+Steve Healt Not really. Most people I know prob don't even know I have them though. It's certainly not as mainstream to have them as it has become in the West, however. The stigma here is that yakuza members tend to have them, but being a big goofy white guy I think it's pretty clear I'm not a Japanese gangster. Sometimes onsens can stop you from going in, but real talk I don't really like onsens anyways. Thanks said, some have let me in in the past under the grounds the tattoos are on my arms and not my back, oddly enough. Sounded to me more like I was getting a "gaijin pass" on that one. Hahaha. -E

Kyde and Eric Thanks for the reply. I'm hoping to visit Japan soon and I'm actually planning a trip from Hiroshima to Hokkaido. I was inspired by your Hokkaido series, can't wait to see how it ends!

+Steve Healt Nice! If you are just visiting and have tattoos you'll be fine. Depending on where they are and what they are you might scare some old ladies, but if you follow through with a smile you'll be fine. Good luck on your trip! -E

I stayed just a couple of blocks near that massive department store, was such a nice surprise walking around and then seeing that! Interesting to know about the gas attacks too, I never knew the specific lines it had affected.... I used the Kodenmacho line a fair bit when I stayed in Chuo-Ku - it was a really nice area to stay in and wasn't too expensive either! :) Really enjoy these ward videos!
