Exploring Abandoned Mines

Күн бұрын

Exploring the top levels of the Oro Denoro mine. Fascinating mine between Grand Forks and Greenwood. This mine is easy to find and explore several old ore carts, tunnels and colorful rocks, Next week we climb down a sheer rock wall and use an inner tube to float into the abandoned flooded sections of the ice cold mine deep underground!

Interesting drive and directions, though i won't go there. I'm not that adventurous. Water, no need for hip waders. Thanks Frank, the tour was great, some artifacts, old beer bottle, cool. Wow Frank, going over that rickety bridge, Max is a helleva lot lighter. Max will follow you any where. Wow, a small section of rail. Different type of cart use to seeing the other types.

Thank you frank, I never gave any thought about mines until now, I cant wait until I find something cool myself, unfortunately I live in Pennsylvania and most are coal, but im sure there's something around, love every single one of the videos you post, keep it up man. So cool to see everything and everywhere you go.

Never could figure out why rats collect sticks like that In some places they have stuff to eat like mushrooms and grass.

Real helpful to be able to scout these mines out from the air... It's amazing how a site like these can be honeycombed to the extent that it is. The last mine we visited was like this - the entire mountaintop was hollowed out. Haha, it's good to have Max with you so that at least someone can appreciate the flooding in the mines.

This one is quite a bit smaller than the mines up at Phoenix in my video under and over Phoenix. It took me a month of exploring last year to explore all of the stopes raises and ore passes!

That rats nest in the beginning of the video when you first enter the mine was where I heard birds. I think that it was an owls nest. There was clearly peeping coming from it when I was there a few years back. Looking forward to the lower levels, I didn't get to see them when I was there.

Not a lot of footage posted on Phoenix. I didn't have a decent camera at the time I was up there exploring. All the footage I have posted from Phoenix is from the Monarch and the Under and over Phoenix video. I have more stuff from when I removed the bat monitor this spring and I will be going back up to do more filming. I was also up there scouting locations for a major motion picture they want to shoot this winter. So stay tuned........

Some amazing big open workings there, that hole you parked next to looked massive from the air! Love the big tunnels, so nice to stand up straight to walk rather than stooped down. If you keep these great videos coming I will be packing up and coming there to live! Awesome stuff! lol

No doubt they removed a lot of tons of material out of this mine. Everything is big in this mine, the stopes pits and tunnels. The big hole by my truck is beside leads to the flooded section where the main haul tunnel is. That's where we will be going on an inner tube next week! This is a great place to live if you love exploring mines!

Can't wait to see that video! I done a 80ft shaft drop on ropes with a wet suit under my overalls, it was still cold wading down the tunnel waist deep. A good way to cool down on a hot day!

I can go up and down inclined shafts with a rope no problem if they are vertical I use a chain ladder. Climbing vertical walls with a rope is hard or impossible unless you have the equipment and really know what you are doing. I know of a mine that has a 700' vertical shaft! I haven't explored that one.

Ever tried shaft fishing? Thats lowering a gopro with a flashlight attached on a long paracord line down a shaft, it can bring back some interesting results. Sometimes it spins like mad, attaching a thin sheet of polystyrene above the camera acts as break, slowing the rotation down. I dunno why, but I am not getting notifications when you reply to my comments, it works on other channels ok, any ideas?
@exploringabandonedmines

You Tube is kind of funny if you have more than one channel you have to use another email address so the notifications are probably going to a addy you never use. I thought about shaft fishing but have never tried it.

I think one of the coolest parts about your videos is your dog going with you. Do you ever have to worry about him falling down a stope? Have you ever had any close calls with him while you two were exploring? My boy, Jax, is a very good dog and sticks to me like glue, but I would be afraid he would think the rats were squirrels and take off after them. I would also be a little worried about him drinking the water in the old mines, especially if it wasn't flowing. What have been your interesting dog experiences?
@exploringabandonedmines
@exploringabandonedmines 8 жыл бұрын
To begin with he didn't like going underground at all. I never forced him too he had the choice of waiting at the portal I never called him into the mine. Then he started going in and he was going crazy after the rats. He got too excited and went in farther than he could see and had a few problems. Since then he has learned to stay within the range of the light. It is amazing how quick they learn and adapt to new situations!

When you go into a mine, is there a smell that indicates bad air, or is it different depending on where you are? Or, is there not really a smell. Thnx enjoy the vids, southern indiana here so not a lot of mines around to explore but looks cool as hell.
@exploringabandonedmines
@exploringabandonedmines 8 жыл бұрын
It is a complicated question but the short answer is probably not. There are many things that can cause you problems. As organic material decomposes it uses up oxygen. So if there is no airflow the oxygen gets used up over time. Same as if there was ever a fire underground. There are other possible issues such as methane and Hydrogen sulfide ( h2s ) it smells bad at lower concentrations but at higher concentrations it wipes out your sense of smell. In that case the only indication you might have of h2s would be a sore throat and a runny nose before you pass out.

I would suggest you edit this video. I know it was published in 2016 and now its 2022, but in it you strongly suggest folks take a trip to this mine (even with their kids) and do some exploring, as you believe it is safe. If someone was to take your advice and get injured or a family member killed, they can say "Frank said it was safe" and sue your ass! Just making a suggestion to protect you.
