In this episode we explore the historical cruise ship MV Astoria, which was the oldest deepwater sailing cruise ship before the pandemic. Since 2020 The Astoria is docked and its future uncertain.
The construction of this ship started in 1944 and commenced service in 1948 as the transatlantic ocean liner Stockholm. She was best known for an accidental collision with the ship Andrea Doria in July 1956, resulting in the sinking of the latter ship and 46 fatalities off the coast in Massachusetts, United States. During her seven decades of service she has passed through several owners and sailed under several names.

Thank you for this unique experience. I would like to add that this ship is a great example of the incredible craftsmanship and quality of Swedish engineering. The ship was ordered in 1944, and launched on 9 September 1946, as Stockholm was built by the famous Götaverken in Gothenburg for the Swedish America Line (SAL). It is worth knowing that during the 1930s the Swedish Götaverken was the world's biggest shipyard by launched gross registered tonnage. It was founded in 1841 and went bankrupt in 1989. So the Astoria (Original name Stockholm) is not only important to the world as the oldest sailing cruise ship in the world it is also very important as it's the last ship still sailing hailing from the famous SAL line, Swedish American Line. So this ship is an important part of Swedish history. Sadly there aren't a lot of KZbinrs covering the SAL ships and their colorful history, perhaps this fantastic video could also contribute to this cause.
@cardy4ever
@cardy4ever 10 ай бұрын
I would also like to add that the original SAL paint scheme was incredibly beautiful and would look great today as well. At some point after the delivery of the , SAL decided to abandon the traditional black hull colour and their entire fleet was repainted with white hulls

The MV Astoria is the longest running Ocean Liner in history btw. Since 1948 she's sailed the seven seas. During her seven decades of service she has passed through several owners and sailed under the names Stockholm, Völkerfreundschaft, Volker, Fridtjof Nansen, Italia I, Italia Prima, Valtur Prima, Caribe, Athena, and Azores before beginning service as Astoria in March 2016. It's good to see her again and in quite good shape. Thanks again Bob! Such a fun look inside a pretty historical ship with a checkered past. Also not to be confused with the tragic demise of the vessel MS Estonia in 1994. Another very interesting maritime incident.

Thank you for this experience. Seeing what a laid up ship is like is pretty eye opening. Even fixing all that mold and the bug infestation would cost a fortune. Shame to see what became of her, but at this point I wonder if sentimental value alone can really help this ship. It is interesting to me how most things like shops and such have been emptied out, but you can still see some small private items of crew here and there. Like they had just left a bit ago.

While it is sad to be scrapped honestly at her age and utility it's not worth keeping her in service, it's too dangerous. Also few want to pay to keep her up as a floating museum.. i.e. even the SS United States isn't doing well in that state. Better to have a video like this to remember her by and she can either rest as an artificial reef, or help to build new buildings

At 75 years old and being in cold lay-up, what it would take to restore this ship as well as bring it up to code for passenger use is not probable. When a ship is in cold lay-up with no maintenance, the equipment will continue to corrode (note the water damage and rust) which is why it probably hasn't been able to sell. Just like an old car, you can continue to pump money into it yet things will still continue to break down. As a cruise enthusiast (14 cruises and counting) , I found this video to be very interesting and appreciate the work you did to get onboard and explore a ship that thrilled hundreds of thousands of passengers over her time!

She's at that stage where new owner's if any that is would have to pretty much almost gut her completely to a shell There's mould damp water ingress in places etc ... Her time is up sadly I say 😢

Not necessarily. She needs a refit and that was already the plan.

I hope she has a few years left of service. She's small so that means there are more options for her to be economical than a larger vessel.

Thank you for visiting such an iconic ship and recording as much as you could. It was fascinating as to how many items were left behind and astonishing items such as apparent clean white shirts left hanging. It felt like a time museum being allowed to peek into such an old vessel!

Weird the ship got so bad in only 3 years! look liked it was abandoned for at least 10 years. Even tho the machine rooms looked fine.

@1320fastback indeed nice to see the inner workings. Even though she has gone through refittings; refurbishing; you can still distinguish her lines as she once was; her stern believe they left it in the original design. Like my comment(s); repeating myself; because I can. She will all ways be a pride of Sweden. Hopefully she will not go to scrapeyard; perhaps a floating hotel or museum; that would be a grand tribute to a beautiful lady !!

@gregsbiplays9899 Yeah, you didn't get it. By frozen in a different time, I mean that it looks like everyone immediately got off the ship and left it in the shape it was when she was still operated. Not much has changed since then.

I don't think her story is over. The owners have no plans to scrap and want her saved. But I think her sailing days are over. She may find use as something different such as a hotel.

It's crazy how fast things decay! Most of the ship was in fairly good condition, but in some areas, mold was setting in and paint was peeling off and it hasn't even been 4 years!

There is very little of the ship's interior that remains of the "Stockholm" Kind of sad, too. She's a tangible link to a significant turning point in trans-Atlantic travel mid-20th Century.

Despite what many believe there are no intentions of scrapping the owners said this. They were only searching for a buyer who can refit her for further service either as a ship, hotel, or something else.

This is definitely one of those ships which its scrapping will be mourned in decades to come. We tend to only think about saving ships from a century ago yet we then scrap the particular vessels from our era which in a hundred years time could well become equally as historically important. No one thought to save the ocean liners from the 1900s and that's regretted a hundred years later. And that cycle is likely to repeat here. By 2099 there could well be very few examples of mid-20th to mid 21st century ships left. This ship is the longest serving liner in the world and was also involved in a serious collision with a famous liner, so lots of reasons for saving this specific ship.
