The MV Astoria is the longest running Ocean Liner in history btw. Since 1948 she's sailed the seven seas. During her seven decades of service she has passed through several owners and sailed under the names Stockholm, Völkerfreundschaft, Volker, Fridtjof Nansen, Italia I, Italia Prima, Valtur Prima, Caribe, Athena, and Azores before beginning service as Astoria in March 2016. It's good to see her again and in quite good shape. Thanks again Bob! Such a fun look inside a pretty historical ship with a checkered past. Also not to be confused with the tragic demise of the vessel MS Estonia in 1994. Another very interesting maritime incident.

Thank you for this unique experience. I would like to add that this ship is a great example of the incredible craftsmanship and quality of Swedish engineering. The ship was ordered in 1944, and launched on 9 September 1946, as Stockholm was built by the famous Götaverken in Gothenburg for the Swedish America Line (SAL). It is worth knowing that during the 1930s the Swedish Götaverken was the world's biggest shipyard by launched gross registered tonnage. It was founded in 1841 and went bankrupt in 1989. So the Astoria (Original name Stockholm) is not only important to the world as the oldest sailing cruise ship in the world it is also very important as it's the last ship still sailing hailing from the famous SAL line, Swedish American Line. So this ship is an important part of Swedish history. Sadly there aren't a lot of KZbinrs covering the SAL ships and their colorful history, perhaps this fantastic video could also contribute to this cause.
@cardy4ever
@cardy4ever Жыл бұрын
I would also like to add that the original SAL paint scheme was incredibly beautiful and would look great today as well. At some point after the delivery of the , SAL decided to abandon the traditional black hull colour and their entire fleet was repainted with white hulls

At 75 years old and being in cold lay-up, what it would take to restore this ship as well as bring it up to code for passenger use is not probable. When a ship is in cold lay-up with no maintenance, the equipment will continue to corrode (note the water damage and rust) which is why it probably hasn't been able to sell. Just like an old car, you can continue to pump money into it yet things will still continue to break down. As a cruise enthusiast (14 cruises and counting) , I found this video to be very interesting and appreciate the work you did to get onboard and explore a ship that thrilled hundreds of thousands of passengers over her time!

While it is sad to be scrapped honestly at her age and utility it's not worth keeping her in service, it's too dangerous. Also few want to pay to keep her up as a floating museum.. i.e. even the SS United States isn't doing well in that state. Better to have a video like this to remember her by and she can either rest as an artificial reef, or help to build new buildings

Hi This Is Shannon Bernard and you did a great job documenting the Astoria there is not to many old ladies left that are still in good condition I think her sailing days may be over the best that they can do is bring her back to her original glorious hey day and turn her into a floating palaces and a tourist attraction just like the rms queen mary in long Beach California or the QE2 in dubi it would be such a shame to scrap her just let her rest find a significant purpose for her instead of the breakers I hope a investor with deep pockets comes around and save the grand old ladie and turn her in to a place where they can have entertainment and concerts and events or maybe a sight for movie and music videos every thing dosent have to go to the scrap yard I know that they can make a profit of off the metal unless there pockets have holes in side of them I think that the Astoria is worth saving and turnd into a place where people that once worked and sailed on her can come back aboard and reminisce about the times when they use to sail on her I think that would be awesome 👌

Whenever I see a video like this, I feel sad for the ship. All alone now, only ghosts walk the decks . The people she carried, the laughter and memories made on her over the years. Now it is silent, the people are gone. In a way, perhaps the ship was alive, in the sense of the energy of the lives that once inhabited her. Like a discarded life, she is alone and forgotten.

Great exploring. Great video in a long line of great videos. 1:05 I love how you pronounce Massachusetts. I might start saying it like that.

Great video, like always! It’s very obvious to see this shit will sadly never sail as a cruise ship again. It’s sad to see such a beautiful ship just being left to decay like that.
