Had a large abscess like this after getting my 3rd molars removed. It hurt so bad, and popped while I was asleep the day before I was to visit my orthodontist. The taste was the worst taste ever, almost like someone else threw up in MY mouth. It only drained part way, and I got the rest flushed and cleaned out today. It feels so much better. The worst part of the procedure was the needle to numb the area, after that it was like a breeze.

Had an infection like this when i was about 10 years old. Went to the dentist, they “numbed” me up, and i put that in quotes because even though they tried to numb it, i still felt every single bit of pain, that’s how bad the infection was. Basically in the end, even though i was yelling and screaming they pulled my tooth out and i felt every bit of it. They didn’t drain it at all or wait for the infection to maybe go down at all. Probably one of the worst experiences of pain I’ve ever had.

Pus and blood immediately shot out and covered a surprisng amount of the mirror. Took qauite a while to drain it all. Went to the dentist and he said I didn't need to do anything else, i had drained it completely. It wasn't an abscess, it was just a rather huge gum infection. My teeth were fine.

My abscess infection, from the back molar/buccal, spread to my cheek, jaw, neck and throat. It gave me sepsis. I had to have two and a half hours of what the surgeons called “emergency, major evasive surgery and two dental drains stitched to my cheek”. The doctors and surgeons had no idea how severe it was. The surgeon said that if I’d of left it had been left another 24 hours then I would most certainly be dead. The thing is, I had already had one course of antibiotics for it before I got admitted to hospital, but it made no difference. It took just 5 days for the sepsis to take hold. I’m still recovering after a two week stay in hospital. I’ve been home a few days now. I had IV antibiotics in the hospital, as well as being on a weeks worth now. Im still feeling pretty groggy though. They said it can take weeks, maybe even months, before I start to feel 100% again.

So, the morale, Always get the anesthesia for any dental procedure you are going through which causes pain..

I had an abscessed tooth. 3 rounds of antibiotics. Dentist wouldn’t pull it because if the infection. Wanted to put me on a 4th round of antibiotics. I was already so sick from them I really didn’t think my body could handle another round. I refused. 2 weeks later I was in the hosp unable to piss and dragging the left leg. And the pain that started as a stiff neck had become excruciating in a matter of hours. They thought stroke or heart attack. Nope. Cancer. Nope. MS. Nope. And the list of test a mile long all came back negative for anything. Oh yeah...I also died on the MRI table. 23 seconds. After 3 days of non stop testing they finally came to the conclusion that I had a spinal infection caused by the abscessed tooth. I also have hearing loss from it. Pic line inserted into my heart and strong antibiotics started every 6 hours for the next 6 months. I was told the pic line was necessary because the antibiotic if used Intravenously would dissolve my veins. Every week for the next 7 months I had to go to an Infectious Disease Clinic and have lab work drawn and receive a dose of an even stronger antibiotic. So if I would have insisted that the dentist do something or maybe went to ER...maybe I would have spent around $200, $300...maybe a little more...as it stood, it ended up costing me $6000 and cost insurance upwards of $400,000. Ended up having the rest of teeth pulled. Am toothless and can’t afford dentures. Cheapest I can find is $2200. I can’t afford that on disability. I was told at the beginning it would be $350. Ended up having to re plumb the house so teeth got put off for a year. Their price went up to $1900 (in 1 year!). Called to see if they would accept down payment and then monthly payments. Nope. And this is a ‘free’ clinic. $50 to walk in the door or if you were sent there by a church or other organization, a get-in-free voucher. So 2 yrs later and I’m still toothless. Probably die that way. So if you’ve made it this far in my ramblings, the moral of the story is...in the long run it’s cheaper and healthier to take care of and keep the teeth you have.

For 5 days I tried to convince myself that "it wasn't that bad" and to "stop being so dramatic"......... Then the auditory hallucinations started. My brother is my roommate and my dad lives down the road. The night the hallucinations began, they insisted I go to the ER. I got some antibiotics, and some (surprisingly good) Ibuprofen. Now I've got a MASSIVE pus pocket taking up nearly the entire roof of my mouth. I'm just trying to get to the point where I can drain it. An abscessed tooth is some of the worst pain you'll ever feel. My top front tooth became abscessed over the course of a year because my previous dentist went too deep while filling a cavity. My whole face swelled and started getting fuzziness in one of my eyes before i started antibiotics and had a root canal done.
@christinaaa_xo2 жыл бұрын
I really wish I would have watched these videos before getting my tooth pulled the other day. Now I have an even worse infection, because the dentist didn't bother to drain the abscess completely before sending me on my way, or at all for that matter besides the pus that came out whenever it was pulled. They didn't even suck the pus out once he pulled it, or use any type of tools to clean up the blood, saliva and pus. Just shoved some gauze in there. I've never had a tooth pulled, and have had pretty good luck as far as teeth go, so I never really had to have any work done besides a couple cavity fillings.. and because of that, I was unaware of what the process was. I shouldn't have to research these things myself before seeing a dentist. I should be able to trust in the work of a medical professional. It's unfortunate I can't. Thank you for this video. Now I know if I ever have something like this done again, to make sure the dentist is actually doing their job.

@calcaterrafamilydentistry4 жыл бұрын
The accumulating pus will follow the path of least resistance. Sometimes it will burst on it's own. Other times, it does not burst, and the pus/infection begins to spread. For a lower molar such as this, it had already begun to spread, and in our estimates he would have needed to be hospitalized within 48 hours if no treatment had been rendered. Before modern treatment and antibiotics, people would routinely die of tooth infections such as these.

If anything, it shows to potential viewers that teeth are indeed connected to important areas of your body and that tooth infections can get quite serious quite quickly.

Why do you need to drain the pus furst before extracting the tooth? Or is it possible to extract the tooth first and drain the puss afterwards? Just curious

I had a groove on my tooth that allowed food to get past my gum line and one day I had woken up from a nap and my whole left side of my face was sollwen. I went to the ER the sent me upstairs to the dentist (VA hospital). I was taken back and prepared for and extraction, when the dentist made the incision my whole mouth literally filled up with pus, even with suction, so fast I had to turn my head and spit. Everytime I go see that dentist, she has to tell her assistants about me. I'm known as her problem child. One tooth had 3 roots!!!

How can you abstract an abscess tooth are you not supposed to put them on antibiotics first
@calcaterrafamilydentistry2 жыл бұрын
Placing this patient on oral antibiotics and sending them home without surgical intervention is malpractice. An infection this severe - less than 2 inches from his brain - cannot be handled by oral antibiotics. The patient would end up either in the ER, the morgue, or go directly from the ER to the morgue. Immediate surgical intervention was necessary - which was what we did.

If you extracted the tooth without cutting, would the pus come out through the tooth socket?

Ok dentist people. I have a bad tooth that's abscessed really bad right now. If I go get some strong ass fishing line and tie it to something heavy and snatch my tooth out? I've been taking antibiotics and it's not going down

Im watching this because I’m curious of how this goes. I just had my wisdom teeth taking out 2 months ago and I’m completely healed . The issue is that I’m not completely done with wearing my retainers for my teeth. I didn’t think about completing my process of wearing my retainers before doing the wisdom teeth removal. I was so worried about what would happen if I didn’t get my wisdom teeth removed which was impacted before the age of 21. I’m 20 years old. I was recommend to a oral surgeon who was unprofessional and the staff as well. The healing process took a very long time. I just went to my orthodontist yesterday about my teeth because it shifted a little which was my gap. I haven’t wore my retainers for a month/ two . So I was told I can still wear them because it’ll bring them back to place. My teeth are in pain right now. But today, I’m wearing the top and bottom. I’m on my way to the restaurant with my fiancé while he was driving. I was falling asleep. The next thing I never thought would happened, pus started coming out on my left side at the end of my bottom mouth where my wisdom teeth was removed. It was a lot of pus which was disgusting and putrid. Alot was oozing. It probably had to do with the pressure of the retainers I’m thinking . I’m calling my orthodontist first thing in the morning. I will irrigate my mouth as well. It’s terrible. My mouth has been through a lot :(.

Watching this in preparation for an appointment soon. Lower left molar needed a root canal done 6 months ago, right before pandemic. They took out nerves, and the doctor vanished. I only had a temporary filling to keep me safe from outside particles and what not. 3 months in, horrible pain had me screaming, was put on antibiotics. After juggling insurance and places to go, finally went back to original place to be told the original doctor left so I had to continue with another doctor. Set up appointment for root canal, have multiple x rays taken because the assistant doesn’t know how to do them on me for whatever reason (this was a month ago). I ask if they can pull it out because it’s become such a hassle, they tell me over and over they would rather save the tooth. Root canal appointment day comes up, dentist cancels. Had to wait two weeks. This week began with that same pain again, how I got it was a mystery cause I shouldn’t be able to feel anything. Come into office for emergency appointment, different dentist tells me I have an abscess that is pushing my tooth out and i won’t be able to save it. Tell me, how did they not see this in the X-rays a month ago? Either they were incompetent and didn’t take proper X-rays, or they saw it and wanted the money from a root canal. Either way, very pissed and am waiting in pain to get it finished (I will have to start this process over again for upper molar on the same side)

I had absecced front tooth for years. It had became chronic. It spilled pus from the root regularly. It was on a necrotic state due to injury I got when I was younger so it was not very painful at all. I suffered from hard dentist phobia and embarrasment so I did not go to dentist until eventually. Thankfully it did not kill me, I did not have a clue that it could be really dangerous. They tried to safe it with root canal and eventually with a root resection but the infection never got away. I got it pulled and now I got an implant on it. After that I changed my oral hygiene habits and I get regular checks. My teeth are now in good condition, no cavities in my last check. A lot of money, sweat and pain has gone to my teeth but finally they are well.

I had a tooth abscess start bout a month ago. Sweeping went away and pimple came up on the gum behind the tooth and popped itself. I kept draining it every few days with just a tiny bit of pus coming out. Well it stop for a few days and I felt pressure in the bad tooth on my bottom jaw and I pressed my gum and instead of it draining out of the gum the piss came out of the pulp in the bad tooth. I've been draining it every few hrs since last night and now when I pushed the gun chunky pieces of pus just came out of the tooth....very worried now. I've had no fever or anything. Any advice anyone or comments?

Couldn't you save the tooth?
@calcaterrafamilydentistry4 жыл бұрын
No. It was beyond saving. Plus, the patient wanted it extracted.
@C10Derek6 жыл бұрын
Why no RCT? My guess would be the patients financial situation?
@calcaterrafamilydentistry6 жыл бұрын
Not so much financial. The patient didn't want anything to do with the tooth anymore, given the ordeal he had been through.
