is that what that means? i always figured it was something to do with a cat that got into a fight or something. none of my cats have ever had that ear notch, and they've all been neutered/spayed, might be something done on request or at certain vets, not that i'd ask for it anyway i prefer my cat ears intact where possible.

@@shumoko It's actually for strays and most commonly will be the tip of the ear, not a notch, but it might be either. Stray feral cats may be brought to vets as part of a "catch and release" program where people in the neighborhood capture stray cats, have them sterilized, and then put them back out in the wild. A regular house cat that has never been homeless likely won't have the ear tip/notch removed because they're indoors, so it's not important to signal to others that your cat has been fixed. Even if they're adopted, if they weren't a feral stray at some point, they're not likely to have the ear tip clipped. This also being said, look for other markings on the cat if it's a notch that's been removed, instead of the clean-cut removal of the ear tip to ensure that the cat isn't actually injured :) You're right, in some cases, it could be that the cat was injured.
