Love watching old baseball footage. As a former Met fan, I love watching early 80’s games played at Shea.

This brings back great memories. Growing up in North Jersey I became an Expos fan because nobody else in school liked them. We got tickets to this game I was in 9th grade. I always felt the 79’ team could’ve done it. Being edged out by “Pops and the family” from Pittsburgh. Great memories⚾️

This is the first game I ever went to. I wish the entire game was available. Fan Appreciation Day, 1981. The Mets gave away team posters, which many fans ripped up to use as confetti. That's why there is so much debris on the field. Many fans were salty about all the losing, 5 straight losing seasons since the Seaver trade and counting. I remember feeling bad for Joe Torre, as he was heckled by many particularly salty and inebriated fans. Torre was fired 2 days later. Despite all the acrimony, most fans applauded the Expos for their playoff berth. RIP, Gary Carter.
@dannyboy346774 жыл бұрын
and all Torre would do a decade and a half later in the Bronx is win the first of his four World Series titles as Manager of the Yankees. The last of those four titles? v the Mets in 5 games, clinching said title at Shea. Little did the Met fans know about Carter at the time, was that 5 years later, he would win a WS title on that field in Game 7 v Boston.

@@robertgreen7071 I remember. I didn't notice until the very end. I was also at the last Expos game at Shea in 2001. Don't remember seeing any fans for that game. It was one of the saddest games I can remember.

I was at this game too. Family had season tickets to the Mets from before I was born till the early 1990's... Torre was told he wouldn't be returning about a week prior, and he wanted to finish out the season.. Class move on his part (and Doubleday's for letting Torre finish the season).. This video does have future Met coach and manager Mike Cubbage's final professional at bat.. the Mets home run in the video is Cubbage. One of 53 MLB players to hit a home run in their final plate appearance! You're more likely to have been in the stands to witness a no-hitter! You witnessed history!

These guys had some really good teams in the late 70s to the early 80s. What a shame that baseball was so behind in the times of expanding the playoff format that the Expos would have a few more playoff appearances. Sad.
@my3dviews4 жыл бұрын
I agree. They played so many games in a season, then only the top team from each division made it to the playoffs. Then on top of that the Expos were the best team in MLB in 1994, but the strike meant no playoffs that year. Who knows, but maybe if they had won the World Series, or had at least done well in the post season, that they would still be around today.

I was at this game when I was 9 years old. Fun fact about this video. The Mets home run that is in this video was hit by future Mets coach and manager Mike Cubbage.. It was his only home run in 1981, and it was also his last plate appearance as a professional ballplayer! He retired after this game and took a job managing one of the Mets farm teams. It was also Joe Torre's last game managing the Mets as he was told he wouldn't be returning for 1982 about a week prior to the game.

If it helps, we adored Rusty here - if Yogi had saved Seaver for Game 7 in the '73 World Series there's every chance Rust would've been MVP for the series, plus Rusty was a key reason Keith Hernandez decided to re-sign with the Mets after he got traded here. Just wish the MLB rosters had still been 25 men in 1986 - Rusty almost for sure would've been the last bat off the bench and gotten his ring. He was my late uncle's favorite player, and I'm glad I got to see him throw out the first pitch at game 3 of the 2015 NLDS.
