Look at the "culture" of most Filipinos now. If they're not doing something that is "uso", they feel left out. They are defining their identity based on something that "flows" while our indigenous people are proud of what they have become from centuries of evolution in their culture. Not saying modernization is bad cause those clothes from before the 1800 are just a big fat no for me. Modernization has done some crappy things though ngl and some “traditional” practices and lifestyles all over the world that have an actual and sensible purpose are being forgotten. Theres gotta be a balance for this sort of thing cause I wish I was raised doing asian squats (I can’t anymore since I was a baby) but I will not give up modern medicine cause thats just stupid. This is just my take on it at least. Edit: cultures do modernize and evolve overtime on their own but colonization and stuff made everything take a huge turn whether good or bad is up to the person.

I wouldn't say the Americans only, The Japanese and Spanish took many of such cultures away, although Spanish colonisation could be an exception to the taking away of culture because they helped modernise the country but they still changed the country and the Philippines never became a tropical, economically low, and rural country it once was. Thus Americans, Spanish, and Japanese changed the Philippines, the better or worse. It was because the Americans was such a successful country that we followed them and they took the Philippines under their wing and did the best they can to improve our country and modernise it. Also I would not say the Americans took the essence of being filipino away but more like fused the cultures together. We may have the Spanish Siesta, Japanese terms in language, American style of clothing and actions, but we still have Filipino food, traditional clothes (ex. Barong Tagalog), and way of life (ex. Hospitality, respect for the elderly). Yes, the Americans, Spanish, Japanese changed the way we think, act or, do things but those changes fused with the essence of the past is what makes us the filipino the world knows us by. -I am not against your comment or ideals in any way but telling you my opinion, I am a fellow filipino born and living in central Visayas and I hope that none of what I said offended you in any way. :)

I love this video! As a Filipina born and raised in the USA, it's nice to see that we have a sense of fashion since the beginning of time. Also, love the dance evolved over time. I noticed from the 70s to 00s, the dances were influenced by American Pop Culture, From 2010s onward, the dances will most likely be influenced by Korean Pop Culture. Actually our identity is really diversed. So before spanish colonization came we really don't have our own identity because there is no philippines. Phil’s are really beautiful people no matter what they wear, looks like from the oldest pictures a woven fabric loincloth and tattoos where pretty much the actual traditional cultural dress, considering the heat in PP that makes a lot of sense. I wonder what kind of cloth fabric that was, what it was made from, like was it silk or something else? Because probably not cotton or linen, who knows, I’m sure there is a way to find out through historical references though, I can imagine some pretty beautiful Lycra skin tight catsuit with the traditional tattoos printed on it so that wearer can be modest but also wear the traditional style textile pants or skirts. I’d like to see more of what the women wore prior to international contact. I can imagine a truely traditional indigenous prom dresses from around the world, which would blow the minds of the other cultures and be a lot of fun. I think a lot of cultures had like English religions of Christianity come and basically set new rules of modesty and dress, which unfortunately caused a loss of connection to very ancient textile art and craft methods sadly. I know for my own culture which is Gael Scot, we were banned for over a hundred years by the English over rulers from wearing our traditional tartans and kilts etc. I get tired of hearing about how it’s white ppl who ruined the world. Well there were once indigenous folk from countries who were white too and they also experienced the same cultural decimation by the Romans and the English. But there no point blaming now, no one alive today to blame. Better to move forward and think about how to incorporate traditional culture and ancestor respect into modern life, to show they didn’t really win, fashion today is so mixed and wonderfully diverse you can wear anything almost anytime except in the most formal of situations and it’s perfectly acceptable in much of the world. All winter long I wear my family’s traditional wooden clan tartan as a scarf and I hope to obtain traditional wooden fabric to one day sew and make my own family tartan kilt skirts to always wear it every day, but it is expensive and hard to source now as it is bespoke handmade weaving or woven on very very old weaving looms which are not automated and it is labour intensive fabric, I also live in a climate which doesn’t really suit wool all year round. I guess I have to be creative and adapt in order to carry on my culture.

It's honestly crazy to see how strong the Spanish Colonial impact stayed with Filipino's even during the Japanese colonization/American colonization. I personally love the Spanish colonial fashion up to the 1960s American fashion. After the 60s, I just don't fw fashion. As a half Filipino, whenever I wear my barong, it's important to me to understand what took place that lead me to proudly wear my traditional Filipino outfit.

considering how unique filipino history is, i find it crazy how despite western influences and all as a byproduct of colonization, many influences in pop during the 1990s and 2000s look so much like the first generation of kpop. seo tae ji and boys basically brought western hip-hop influences, yet filipinos have been doing it for longer. and yet, we don't get the same magnitude of attention as kpop or east asian media...

How I wish Filipinos still wear their traditional clothing as if it were norm like in Japan. The Traje De Mestiza looks really good! Has a very unique vibe to it because it looks western and not Asian at all! But, I do understand why they don't use it much often - It's very hot😂 not ideal for a hot climate. Sana ang Pilipinas balang araw ay makagawa ng pampublikong damitan tulad noong unang panahon. Yung susuotin ng lahat ng tao sa bansa.
