South Shore Gunite Installing exposed aggregate concrete around a swimming pool.
The process we use here is called a seeding process. You can also get the aggregate added to the truck at the plant but that limits the different colors you can use. We have 15 different blends and color styles. The seeding process also ensures that you dont miss a spot because there was a lack of stone in that area.

After we seed it, float it and trowel it we are able to then hose the majority of the cement off the surface to reveal most of the stone. We then go back the next day and do an acid wash to bring out the color.
Yes we have a lot of guys doing this work but this is a pool patio that will have lots of bare feet on it, its not a side walk. we need it to look good and be smooth. Power washing the next day creates a rougher surface that this.
We used a plastic control joint in the video as this is an acceptable practice, we offer saw cuts but they cost more and not everyone wants that.
We understand there are many different ways to do exposed aggregate concrete patios. This is the way that gives us excellent results on a daily basis. This crew will pour 3 or 4 600-2000 SF decks per week all summer with a few 10,000-18,000 SF decks per year.

I have seen this done a different way for driveways. They use a high power sprayer to "wash" the cement binding from the aggregate. With a darker concrete this exposed aggregate wash was very nice for a driveway.

A high pressure washer works great for sidewalks and driveways, however on a surface where people regularly wear bare feet the surface must be as perfect as possible. We hose and sponge the concrete off at the end of the placement process followed by an acid wash the following day.

There are 2 ways of doing exposed aggregate, the stone can be added to the concrete mix or it can be broadcast over like you see here. you cannot just find the aggregate in existing concrete and create a nice finish. We use the cast method because we buy very nice specific stone for this application, we have many different blends and colors so we do not want to be buying extra stone to put in the mix. the broadcast method also make a much more uniform finish than if the stone is in the mix.

We offer saw cut joints at an extra cost. Saw cutting is much more costly than adding a plastic expansion joint and we need to be competitive and offer all options.

Having to put the stone in the mix severly limits the color options available to the end user. We offer at least 10 different stone style/ color options. the stone is brought in from different parts of the country and would be far too costly to the end user if we had to fill the truck with enough stone that we have enough on the surface to provide a good final product. I do not disagree with your method, we prefer ours because of the options it allows and the perfect product we produce.

I am new to all this, never have actually done anything with cement. I am in the beginning stages of digging out a 12x12 area for a patio. We live in KY where it gets very hot and humid. Its been in the 90's already with high humidity. Started 3 days ago but have only been able to work on the area one day because of the rain and high temps. Looking to do this to my patio but I was wondering do you have to fill the entire surface with the rocks or can I use a few? What say you? Also do I have to use some kind of re barb or mesh or can it just be cement on top of the gravel?

These guys know what they are doing, they have rubber boots if they want them and they are probably not in the concrete as much as some of the other guys on a regular basis. To answer eddy, you can get a chemical burn from cement by not wearing the correct protective gear and it can happen quickly if the right circumstances happen together.

Hi SSG pools, I need some advise from you, I would like to do a small area next to my shed,so I can put my 6 x 4 trailer. My question is: Is the concrete made of 3 gravel, 2 sand, 1 cement? and then on top of that when everything is smoothed throw the aggregate and level it? How deep should I make the excavation? 10- 15 cm deep? that includes for the top aggregate?. Thanks.
@SSGPools
@SSGPools 11 жыл бұрын
Do you supply the concrete company with the stone aggregate or do they just use a standard peastone? We have 12-15 different color blends of stone from different parts of the country and the world so that the customer has a lot of different color options. When the concrete company adds the stone this typically limits the color options and the chance of having gaps between stones is greater.
@OOpSjm

Also, your not loading the concrete mix with excess stone. Casting puts the stone where you want it.
@SSGPools

The aggregate is exposed by cleaning the surfaces of the stone at the end of the day followed by an acid wash the next day. This process could be used on a glass product also.

We price our work and choose our crew sizes to get jobs done flawlessly and efficiently. We have some of the larger crews in our trades because we have found that larger crews on certain jobs equal better products. Its far less expensive to have an extra couple guys on pour day than to send a whole crew back to rip out and re-pour a deck. Its all about quality.

This is a joke you don't do exposed aggregate like that at least not in Michigan we don't the stone is already in the concrete mix you pour the concrete out you finish the top off you let it set up and then you wash the top off simple as that. You can all also use a product called top stop after you finish the concrete you spray the top stop off so the top surface never gets hard cover it with visqueen you could come back 24 hours later and spray the top off comes up beautiful.
@SSGPools
@SSGPools 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Leo, you can do that here to. you can do that anywhere you want if you order the right mix. What you cant do is create custom color and stone blends from the readymix truck. You cant set yourself apart from all the other aggregate companies, you cant offer your high end customers something special, unique or even custom. We are different which is why our customers like us and pay us more to do so.
