EXPOSED: How The Celtics Defense Stifled KEVIN DURANT

Heat Check

Heat Check

2 жыл бұрын

This is the moment that decided everything. In a scramble situation, on the kick out, Tatum goes to the basket for what he thinks would be a shot by Smart, but his defender KD gets caught up watching the ball. And just moments later, this loss of concentration by Durant gets punished with an instant classic moment and the game winner by Tatum.
However, as memorable as this would turn out to be, it was actually the Celtics defense on Durant and overall against Brooklyn that won them this game.
And I’ll break down everything for you. What up everybody, my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it.
This is pretty much what the game plan was for the Celtics defensively.
Have Grant Williams as the primary guy, but then as soon as Durant puts the ball on the floor, have everyone else shrink and close the driving lane. Make somebody else take the shot.
This was even more obvious in this example when Kyrie wasn’t in the game.
On the handoff from Dragic as we stop it right here, you see Williams attached to the hip, and Al Horford closing the driving lane.
At the same time, notice how White is watching Dragic, meaning that he’s ready to rotate over there if there’s a pass outside, and Tatum is splitting the difference between his guy out here, and Claxton, so that he’s ready to rotate down here if the pass goes to the big man.
As we let it roll, KD takes a contested shot which of course he can make, but this execution is all that you ask from the players if you’re Ime Udoka.
Again, on the drive, Kevin is swarmed by Boston players, and check out the textbook example of going vertical and contesting the layup cleanly. The body contact, no foul and another miss.
(AL Odbrana 1, pa snimanoto od 3Q pa snimanoto od 4Q)
And I gotta give a major shoutout to Al Horford who as an almost 36 year old did a phenomenal job on multiple switches against Durant.
To be able to keep up with one of the deadliest scorers in NBA history at his age is unbelievable, and this is just a stunning possession. As you can see Kevin has Horford on an island way out here, with room to go both left and right.
But check out the incredible defense by Al, literally hounding Durant all over the perimeter, eventually forcing a tough fadeaway with the shot clock expiring and a bad miss.
This was absolutely amazing.
The Celtics have a lot of long and athletic guys to throw at KD, whether that is Tatum like in this situation, or Brown right here following the action and getting another block, they really made it difficult for him.
Even with all of that however, Kyrie still went nuclear on Boston, and the Nets almost won the game.
This is going to be the story for the rest of this series, as the Celtics will have to pick their poison and shut down 1 only to have the other guy explode.
But as long as they keep playing this type of defense, and the size advantage that they have, they are in a good position.
Before the series I picked the Nets in 7 and although they almost won game 1 on the road, I’m much higher on the Celtics right now. Still there’s no switching and I’m staying with my pick. Brooklyn in 7. That’s it for now, subscribe and talk to you in the next one. Peace out.

Even tho I’m giving a lot of credit for how well Boston defended against KD. It’s still crazy how many bodies you’ll need to really guard against KD and still left him with 23 points but with bad efficiency of course. Using that same defensive scheme on almost any other player would have them finish with points on the single digits. Goes to show much you have to do to really slow down a player like KD but good job with Boston nonetheless.

Long time nets fan here. Great game but kd really got trapped every single time he went into the free throw area I knew exactly what the Celtics were planning and then kd continued to take that small drop off pull up mid range shot and it became very predictable. That’s why he started getting blocked from that same area. Kyrie was unstoppable but kd was getting locked up by everyone. Good defense by the Celtics Should’ve done more plays to actually set kd up instead of having him iso every time because they knew exactly what he was going to do. Claxton was doing everything he could in the paint and nash really should’ve let Aldridge play, I hope he does because having him and Claxton as the bigs I think is what we may need.

Well maybe that benefits KD and the nets 4 players are going to be open when the crash the middle on KD. If I'm KD I'm looking to pass early and often to my shooters to get them hot early so later in the game they will be hesitant to blitz him. It'll open up the middle for KY and KD. LA is also an outlier. I'd use him earlier in the first half to get after Al horford

In game 1 and 2 you saw doubles on KD come from the blind side. Moreso in game 1. Here you saw Boston guarding the lanes and KD eyeing the D heating and him trying to beat the help defender to the spot forcing a tough shot. He's running the offense where he may need to have the offense run for him. Meaning slips, flares, screens, swinging to weak side to keep stretch efense and keep them honest.

They just blame the short comings of the offense of durant but not giving credit the reason for that. The Celtics defense. I wish the Celts can continue to do this minus the fouls and next game shut down kyrie. It's gonna be hard but not totally impossible. If only Robert Williams is healthy, we need all the help we can get. I also wish Celtics stars/offense as a team won't go cold. They need to take game 2 and make it 2-0 and play every game like a game 7 because after that it's going to brooklyn and they need to eliminate the nets as quick as possible to not exhaust them out. I think the longer the series it will be in favor of the nets. I think this is our key to winning the series.

@@mutandaeffiong2685 I heavily disagree. Game 1 and game 2 are a must win for the Celtics. Especially considering that Ben Simmons is coming back more than likely in game 4, and Robert Williams will not be present until MAYBE the second round, the Celtics really need to win these home games. This may sound like a reach, but if the nets actually won that game 1, the series would've already been over. The Celtics need all the momentum

@@gobirds2083 for sure it's not that simple. they threw bodies at him from different directions, not to mention they manhandled him off the ball. Saying KD makes those shot implies he does that vs the same looks he saw this game, which he's never really seen. I'll think he'll adjust and play better, but he didn't just miss makeable shots. they stripped that man clean, several times. Celtics had a 15 pts lead and then went scoreless for like 6 min. If they make their FT's and open layups its not even that close to begin with.

That's right - it's the game plan that's important. Everyone's talking about KD, Tatum, Kyrie, Horford, the last play, but the most important thing is how differently the two teams executed on offense - the Nets were shooting from midrange while Boston was easily getting to the basket. That's just better all around coaching - Boston had better offensive plan and played better defense against the Nets.

kevin durant is skinny, so if the defenders are allowed to be more physical, of course durant will be bothered. unfortunately, i think the NBA is rigged to a certain extent, in a sense that the league wants their superstars to look good every night for marketing purposes. i predict that next game, the refs will call a lot more fouls on people guarding durant, which will force the celtics to be less physical with him

Without the refs helping him, KD could still score at least 25 every night, but if things go the way i think it’ll go, i think KD might drop at least 35 every night for the rest of this series. Games like what we just saw are too good to be true, call me a pessimist but i just think from now on, we’ll get more of those games where the refs stop the play every 10 seconds to call a foul from even the slightest bit of contact

@@edwardcui7535 you're right tho I'm not disagreeing the league BEEN like this since 2012 I think. However if there's contact why shouldn't be a foul called. If the Celtics constantly use their body weight as advantage on him, that is still taking advantage of him and I see why some fouls will be called. If Celtics wanna keep it up imo they should do the same things however they shouldn't get caught up emotionally and start crying, the have to put their hands up like Marcus Smart did on that play to force KD. That will win them the series imo.

Hold up on the game winning play, Durant was where he needed to be though. He was effectively covering both Brown and Tatum, Kylie was down on the block guarding nobody, his man was at the perimeter. If KD plays Tatum there’s an open three look for two Celtics on a kick. And Kyrie isn’t in position or playing defense either so Take KD takes out the short open pass, and temporarily the cut, but where he leaves a window kyrie just needs to slide up and steal, he was staring at the ball so idk why he didn’t intercept. Shoot the drawing at 3.3 left in the game has two nets in the paint upright. Next to each other and looking at the ball, guarding zero people and taking up no space. We got at 2 v 2 on the wing and 2 v 1 up at the top of the key. And a wide open guy in the corner. So I’m a little confused how this one goes on KD. It’s not how you played the game it’s if you won and lost. Kyrie was doing great but blew the play y’all just biased

Brooklyn thought that the Celtics would just put on another big in Timelord's position and they tried hard to exploit this. But Celtics countered by putting different bodies. I hope when the nets adjust to this, robert will be back. This is why game 4 and 5 ish will be crucial for both teams

This game the nets played horrible on the defensive end it was clear to see the size difference was causing issues but nast never adjusted to it . Kd also had a horrible game one of the worst games I ever seen him play

Kudos to Al Horford. He's not a threat in offense anymore but he is still one of the best post defenders. He's not a rim protector but still a top-tier defensive anchor.

Al had 20 (8-13 shooting) and 15 (6 off boards). Despite his age, he still makes a difference offensively, especially in Playoffs.

Good coaching on the part of the Celtics. Coach Nash needs to improve obviously as talent alone wont win.

KD was extremely predictable this game and you can tell that the Celtics watched a lot of film prior to this series, because they knew exactly when to swipe at the ball or when to get in his space. They had that man looking like he forgot how to dribble 💀 I expect him to adjust and not go for the same looks in game 2, and I think the Celtics do too. They didn't know what to do with Kyrie tho. With all that being said, this might be one of the best first round series we see in a while 😂

Im not a fan of both teams but KD had a bad game and we all know that he wont stay the same in all of the remaining games. They almost won the game despite KD having a bad game. This is gonna be a fun series. A defensive team against and offensive team.

If they are swarming KD that means two players are wide open. That's hole in Boston's defense. I believe KD will be looking for the defensive look again and will be seeing those players who will be open. They gotta be shooters
