Applying a conservative estimate of four indirect deaths per one direct death9 to the 37 396 deaths reported, it is not implausible to estimate that up to 186 000 or even more deaths could be attributable to the current conflict in Gaza. Using the 2022 Gaza Strip population estimate of 2 375 259, this would translate to 7·9% of the total population in the Gaza Strip. A report from Feb 7, 2024, at the time when the direct death toll was 28 000, estimated that without a ceasefire there would be between 58 260 deaths (without an epidemic or escalation) and 85 750 deaths (if both occurred) by Aug 6, 2024.10

I think most people groups are referred to by their location a lot of the time, unless you are trying to differentiate between people groups in the same location, e.g., people indigenous to Brazil as opposed to Brazilians. We could all say "Palestinians in Gaza," but I think most people know that "Gazans" are Palestinian. Until Israeli settlers move in, I guess...

@@geraldmeehan8942 they'd likely be less complacent if they were worried about their jobs due to a suffering economy, or their freedom to to travel. Economic measures such as BDS hit the working class most of all, and unless they have enough fervor (the complacent wouldn't, hence the complacency), then they would push back on government policies that are causing other countries to apply economic sanctions. In a democracy (for Israelis at least), this can be effective for policy change. But, most countries with strong economic ties have no interest in applying those kinds of actions. Hence the impunity.

Risking economic consequences makes it hard for European countries such as Ireland to push back materially against US foreign policy regarding Israel, and military influence makes many poorer countries feel like they have to go along with the US. The same is true of China, and Russia to a lesser extent. It used to be the case for the UK and France, but their influence has diminished since WWII.

Northern Gaza is where the farms were: produce fields, orchards and olive groves and vineyards, greenhouses -- homes and barns and sheds -- all torn down, fields torn up with tank tracks, trees pulled out, greenhouses smashed. Nice farmland, carefully tended, it was feeding much of Gaza with fresh produce. Now Israelis will seize this and settle there. That's wrong in every possible way.
