In this video we take a look at Ken Coleman's terribly short sighted view of overemployment while making endless assumption about the people who chose that life.

I see this attitude from Ken and others like him a lot. And I think it's so insulting to them because it's a matter of pride. They see themselves as job creators and believe they're paying employees enough to live if they're sensible with their money. So when those same employees have to go and get a second job to actually get by, as a defense mechanism they lash out at the employees doing it with a variety of excuses rather than simply accept that if they believe people should be working 40 hours/week only, then they need to adjust the wages they're paying.

I hate to say it, but like I came in with an open mind to the whole "pull yourself up by your bootstrap approach" that older people constantly parrot. But honestly, even with dotting your i's and crossing your t's it's just not that easy anymore. The whole rat race concept that Gen X came up with worked when they were young, but it's very different nowadays. Throw away all of that. Or at least acknowledge that what worked for your generation might not be same for others. I'm still all for capitalism and working hard, but it just feels like all of these old people are just shrugging the younger generation off as lazy and it's infuriating. You can't just walk into an employer's office anymore, slap the resume on the desk and walk out gainfully employed. The whole process of getting a job is so much harder for a variety of different reasons. Then you actually have the jobs themselves. You have the vast sea of jobs that really don't need you for 8 hours, and on the complete other side of the spectrum you have companies that will work you like a dog. I've worked both. And you want to get out of these places about as soon as you humanly can. Underemployment legitimately is a real phenomena. There are PLENTY of companies in 2023 that will completely mismanage. But I'm sorry but there's just too much BS out there as it is to worry about some vague reputation damage of being a "job hopper". At a certain point, you have to realize that if you've been bouncing around shitty employers for years, the fault can't be entirely placed on the candidate if they really are worth their salt. I will bounce around for as long as I need in that regard.

The person doing this is no different then a business that may use other business to offset loses in another. How would it sound if the government said you could only have one business, to sit on one board of directors? That's only one LLC, one corporation S,or C. All this is doing is controlling your employees so they are solely dependant on you as an employer, waiting around for you to grow the company so they can maybe get a raise. Why even give a raise at all why not pay them minimum wage? They can budget their finances so the employer can pay them less. This is nuts!! Who are these people??

This smart bro reminds me of one of my exmanagers, who was a great advocate of on location work, so he dropped by even when he had Covid. When I was on sick leave, he flat out questioned if I was sick. He used every moment to talk shit on remote work and female coworkers in general, cause ‘we all know, how women are’, and the list continues. By the way I have no memory of him doing actual work, and everyone was happy, when he was out of the office, cause he yelled all day on the phone with his buddies ( he was deaf on one ear after a car crash, so literally screamed all the time ), or he brought in his 8 year old son, expected women collegues to take care of him while he left who knows where. Never once did he say thanks, or anything. When I quit he was so offended, that he was not willing to talk to me anymore. Emotional maturity and critical thinking skills are definitly not a requirement to become a CEO. Dude is what office nightmares are made of.

I wonder if the thing here is just management skillset. Seems like there is a glut of serial managers who go task by task in sequence, preferring a co-located workforce. Computer savvy managers from GenX and below have developed skills of asynchronous management, where task is thrown out to a project team to complete and the manager ensures the work is actually done. Asynchronous lends itself better to remote work and overemployment. I think the asynchronous style of management will grow because more work can be completed faster than serial management enables.

People like Ken love to act like the employee employer relationship is one-sided and should always be one-sided. People like him get upset when workers find leverage and aren't completely beholden to their employer. I've been fortunate to have enjoyed all the employers I've worked for, but that's because, in general, they understood we had a business relationship where we're both trying to maximize our profits. People like Ken get so upset with remote work or over employment because they can't exercise complete control. Those are red flags that indicate that I should never work with someone like that. And it's funny because they'll get defensive like they represent all employers and that no one will find any better employer. It's like trying to leave an abusive relationship. I personally couldn't be over employed because I'm too busy with my one job (but they pay well, and I love the work, so it's not something that even crosses my mind), but if someone can meet all their obligations for both jobs, it doesn't matter. If I'm paying someone to do a job, and they happen to be able to do it in 10 hours a week, then they just means they are really good. If someone can't meet their obligations (whether because they're over employed, bored, just don't feel like showing up to work, etc), then they get talked to about it and fired if it's something that can't be resolved. It's pretty straightforward. I think Ramsey solutions just can't manage people and gets upset if they can't have complete control and final say over their ideas and people

It’s funny that CEOs are never shamed for owning multiple companies, but when workers have to work two full time jobs to survive in this economy, we’re labeled as unprofessional, shady, etc. it’s ridiculous! It’s also ridiculous that companies can fire us on the spot and we have to give them two weeks notice when we quit. 🤦🏻‍♀️
@bbbbbbb51
@bbbbbbb51 10 ай бұрын
You don't have to give them 2 weeks notice. That's a choice. I'll give out 2 week notices again when companies no longer fire people on the spot or "let them go" via downsizing & give notice in advance as well. Until then, I'm never giving in a 2 weeks notice anywhere I work. If it makes landing jobs harder, so be it, but I don't care to work for a company that treats me like a pound of flesh, so the end result is really a win. It just comes with some realistic consequences.

I give 2 weeks notice and smile every day. Come in 15 minutes early and stay about 15 minutes later to avoid the traffic. Document my work dissertation style (multiple pages) and train my replacement with 1-2 hours sessions of knowledge transfer. Several times a week, if not every day. I love it !! 😀 In my industry, companies can give anywhere from 1-3 hours to 1-3 days notice for layoffs or terminations. I work in an at will state. Be prepared.

People have two jobs not because they want to, but they because they have to. People like Ken Coleman fail to realize that the world is changing (not for the better) and they're still giving outdated advice when it comes to the job market and workplace culture. Back in the 50s and 60s, one salary could pay all your bills and still have money left over for savings, investments, and other entertainment venues.

Exactly 💯. I’ve lived by myself for 35 years on my income alone (and paying child support). Damn skippy I had 3 jobs in my mid to late twenties when my primary job barely paid a living wage. Now I make a salary in the 1% quintile and am comfortable with no need to work another job. But things happen and it’s easy to get knocked back down when you weren’t born on 3rd base thinking you hit a triple while the pleb;s struggle on.

@@Financialcoachchris Most over-employed workers manage to do all the jobs they're hired for and do them well enough to satisfy all their employers. For some reason, being salaried has begun to equate to "We own your soul for this many hours per week" instead of "We reserve your time for this number of hours per week to get this amount of work done" which is an absolutely toxic attitude. If a company gets the work done it has hired a worker to do, what is the problem of sharing said worker with another company?

I always find this sort of thing enraging & funny. Ken Coleman is the type of person that says "No help for you, pull yourself up by the bootstraps"... which is fine. But then when I say "Your right. Ill slash my spending, get 3-4 jobs, work 100 hours a week, and fix this mess"... he freaks out Well what is it my dude? Do you want me to grind until I make it or do you want to give me money & assistance? Obviously for people like him, there is a secret 3rd option: "I want you to stay poor, do my menial labor for pennies, and I want you to blame the entire situation on yourself" I ran into this in college. I wanted to pay for it myself & graduate without debt. It was a MASSIVE pain to do... because there was roadblock after roadblock preventing me from grinding. 1) McDonalds: "Sorry we can't schedule you for anymore than 32 hours or we will have to give you health benefits" 2) College Lab Technician & RA: "Sorry you can't hold two jobs at the university" 3) RA: "Sorry, you can't do more than 15 hours of extra security" 4) RA: "It is an unpaid job but you get room and board. You will have to work security to get actual money" 5) Summer RA: "You can't work more than 40 hours a week because we dont do overtime. The summer RA position is 35 hours, einstein's bagels is owned by the university so you can't work more than 5 hours there" 6) Grants/Scholarships: "Wow, looks like you earned a lot last year working 3-4 jobs at once. You no longer qualify for the grants & scholarship" *BONUS* "None of these schedules are fixed, hope they don't conflict with class or your other jobs, we won't make scheduling accommodations" I didn't find out about 1-6 until I had already accepted the jobs, made arrangements, and had been working for several weeks aka I was too far into to backout without losing a lot of money. I did it though. Worked myself to death while doing a game of thrones style power grab at each of my jobs. The thing I have a problem with is: I was being told to pull myself up by the bootstraps & everyone saying that was also lighting my bootstraps on fire. These kinds of people don't want you to succeed, they want you to do that secret 3rd option

What it is, is they think you're spending your paycheck wrong and with better money management you could work for only them at the wage they're paying. It's a defense mechanism to justify that the problem isn't their awful wages, and rather shift the blame to you having poor financial disclipline.

Yeah, I respect that you are above board with both jobs. Personally I don’t think it’s smart to lie about having two jobs. There are double standards for sure, but trying to keep the jobs from finding out about each other is stressful, and if one job find out, you’re losing at least one of the jobs and possibly end up worse off. On top of that, as crappy as these companies are, they will play the victim and crack down on remote work and point at this as one of the reasons.
