The 'i' next to the DV input is the logo for 'i.LINK' which is basically just Sonys branding of firewire/ieee1394. 'DV' often also means the same thing, but also refers to various digital video formats. The 'auto'(they were rather exaggerating with that description) head cleaner parts can often be easily removed.

Mine looks a little identical minus the "Recording" DVD, just bought it "refurbished" from Amazon (SLV-D350P) (year 2005 model). So far no issue with mine, but then again I just got it a week ago so we'll see. I did the Amazon Prime route because of the 90-day free return if it don't work. I have sooooo many videocassettes, I need to start digitalizing them to my external hard drive using OBS software. Biting my nails every time I plop a videotape in this refurbished one because my old VCR finally gave out and started eating tapes after so many years of good service, and I'm not a "fix-it" guy. Once these videotapes are transferred to my external hard drive I'm gonna shit-can the videocassettes once and for all. I HATE dealing with VCR's and videotapes!

These were never made by Sony, all of these units were made by Samsung with a Sony badge slapped on them.

I'm looking to buy a RDR-X525 it upscales to 1080i and the following model 535 to 1080p

The upscaling is probably pretty pointless, TVs inherently scale any input anyway, and will probably often be a better quality scaler.

Did this erratic behavior of the VCR happen when you didn't have the hood off?

Thanks for this comment. The VHS side behaved normally with the cover on, so I did some research this morning. Now I think I know what happened. With the cover off, too much light probably caused the end of tape sensors to became confused, which explains why the unit shutdown as if there was a problem. I have removed the part of the video showing the VHS side malfunctioning. Unfortunately, putting the cover back on the unit did not fix the DVD issue.

@pasttimetech If you are sure the copy of Captain America you tested is a known working DVD (you may have tested it with other DVD players), the DVD drive's optical lens head may be clogged or dirty. The head itself might even be disconnected from the DVD drive mechanism. If you are willing to spend some money, you could have a technician such as 12voltvids check that out.

I have the same thing and only get a grey screen it will play half a second of video then go back to grey

Why does that have a red paper sticker on? Oh that makes sense I always wondered why it was there or if it was meaning it had at one point been a demo model.... but that makes sense I like it being there.

I've got one, dated 5B. It is rather unreliable with DVD timer recordings. Whenever I do a timer recording, it tends to fail on finalizing the disc, but when I do full manual recording, it tends to work fine.

hey man probably you (or anyone reading this comment) can help me. i found this DVD/VCR combo in a thrift store without the remote but i have a sony trinitron 27'' that the remote (RM-Y180) has the option to apparently be paired with the dvd/vcr as well but i can't find the code to program it, i saw many pages and tested many codes without success, maybe by chance do you know the code to use it with the TV remote?. thanks for your video man.

It only works with the original remote that it came with, I tried different sony remotes and it didn't work.
