As someone who used to do interviews with regular people with no media training I would have taken a step back at the very first sign of hostility. I would have had an off the record conversation asking if she had done a number of interviews already that day, and told her the confusion with what her people had said in regards to being able to ask her anything. It would be time to allow her to set boundaries and expectations because her team did not. Then I would probably switch things up and let her ask some questions of me, because there was obviously a lack of trust. Interviewing is very difficult to do well. I really empathize with this journalist.
