Exposing Your Horse to Gunfire

Been asked many times how to train your horse for gunfire; never done it except for the occasional rifle shot while on the ground next to my horse. That's different from multiple gunshots off his back. Thought it would be the same as anything else,start small then build on each try. And thought I'd film it to show the horse getting sacked out and comfortable being close to gunfire.

i just parked my new string of 3 mustangs (halter, saddle, bridle broke already, had em for about 3 months now) and a bale of alfalfa across the road about 120 yds from the skeet range and shot about 3 skeets a minute with my friends and moved them a bit closer every couple minutes depending how skittish they acted, once i got down below 40 yds i took more time in between shots and moved just a smidge closer

I trained my horse in a similar fashion. Firing at distance and then get closer. Then fire off his back. He now goes into volley fire and connon fire without bolting. Black powder Musket and .38 pistol

smokeless power helps because they will also fear movement. I started with a 22 cal and worked uo to the 30/30. I'm lucky, mine accepted the shooting real well. The click of the hammer is a que to the shot. No one should be afraid of sound, it never bites, kickes or hurts ya. I can use my horse as as rest as I take aim and shoot. He just doesn't mind at all. He thinks he's the one doing it....he,he. Your method is right on.

I would prefer black powder for a couple reasons, for one, to get the horse used to smoke, and two the sound sltends to be a thumpier boom rather than an ear splitting crack.

Either weak hammer spring, too hard primer cap, or just bad primers. Or a combo of all three. ^.-.^

@RYDERkN I do believe they make horse ear plugs. Of course, you would need to sack out the horse to these as well. Rick Gore has a sacking out video to horsey ear plugs on his KZbin channel if you care to look him up.

I have been working with her a lot as far as relaxing in general, and other things that spook her she will give me her ears first for me to tell her what she should do before she really reacts. But with gunshots she still won't pay any mind. She does live with a paint who couldn't care less about gunfire, even likes it, but with my mare dominant I'm not sure if modeling the paint mare for my Hano would help or teach the paint to be nervous (since my nervous hano mare is dominant)?

I have a Hanovarian mare, 15 y.o., once a brood mare long before I got her, and of course received her training in dressage. I have been working with her to be calm around gun shots. After going through several boxes of simple .22 blanks (>400 rounds), treats upon treats, etc, she still has a stronger reaction to it than your horse does here. I know some horses are easier/ harder with gunfire, & is turning out especially hard, but do you have any additional suggestions that could help more?

Exposure and repetition. I started with a unloaded air gun. "pellet" just cock it and pop it. moved up to a .22 then a rifle and shotgun. I can shoot while mounted, or use him as a rest. He's conditioned and just doesn't mind. I bring the gun he get's all interested. Want's to go check out what I shot. Kind of a nice feature to have. Shot a coyote once and he went right up to sniff it. Yee haw. Tip: Best time to begin with this is when there young. 6 mo. to a year. Just shoot around them. Condition.

Erin, The Sorrel horse in the videos is now coming 17. For the past 8 or 9 years I only ride him in a bosal - sometimes with a fiador, sometimes only with a hanger, and I only use mecate (McCarthy) reins. [e-mail]

i train my horses to be fine with an "indian saddle" (hemmed blanket folded in half with 2 cinches and stirrups stitched on, couple extra pouches sowed on cut out of a second blanket+saddle sheath for my 30-30), my aussie saddle, western saddle. For a bridle they need to be good with a hackamore, normal bridle (i have 4 bits i use daily) and a halter with the rope tied back around to the other side=makeshift hackamore

which is "bad" horsemanship but most cowhorses were expected too until the 70s , this "bad" horsemanship is really just people not wanting their horses to be flexible
