why didnt you decide to tack earlier into free wind after the start?

Your analysis must emphasize earlier identification of light air conditions you'll expect to be disturbed by the boats you're (unpreparedly) emerging from beneath for your final tack onto stbd for the start. You parked after that last tack. Typically, better starts would be had by eating more transoms on port to establish your right side strategy if for nothing other than clear air away from the start.
