3:35 I really like the small kssh in panel 2. It terminates in a physical splash of water that leads the eyes up to the more bombastic KSSH of panel three. To me, it feels like a sort of visual J-cut, trying the two panels together with audio. Again, just uniquely comics

I couldn't explain my appreciation for SFX lettering, this is an amazing summary! Paying attention to scale, placement, and color to your letterforms can go a long way and create a magic only comics can.

One of my favorite artists who use sound effects well is James Stokeo, who wrote Aliens: Dead Orbit and Orc Stain. He can flood the page with sound effects at times to really saturate how the page sounds. I love it

Me Me Yup! Love Stokoe! I guess you've seen the piece I did on Aliens: Dead Orbit? Not SFX but some of his greatness in there. - Hass

I mean sound effects in general if placed/drawn can make the page more dynamic

what do you think about the absence of sound effects? some artists like frank quietly, bryan hitch and john cassaday don't use them at all

Yeah I replied to another comment that was similar, I have no issues with sound effects or lack of sound effects, it depends what the work is doing with those decisions that is interesting though! - Hass

I love the sound effects in God Hates Astronauts. It's basically just another way for the comic to deliver puns and jokes. You couldn't do that in any other form of media.

I wrote somewhere, maybe the Patreon, about the fun sound effects from 4 Kids Walk into a Bank, which I'm guessing is a similar thing. LOVE em.

Do you have an opinion on comics that don't have sound effects? It's rare, but I think the Iron Man Extremis one by Adi Granov was sound-FX-text-less
@afonsolucas22196 жыл бұрын
Conan the Barbarian doesn't have sound effects or thought ballons either. Feels more real and I kinda like not having thought ballons. You never know what a character is thinking.

I think that artist that lean to the realist style don't use sound effects because it clashes too much with their style
@StripPanelNaked6 жыл бұрын
I think as with anything if you have a reason for doing something it should work. Watchmen has no sound effects? Or maybe just one or two, and I love that book. It tries to go for that more grounded realism, but I think you can still pull that off with SFX too. I guess when there's a clear direction I think it's all good. As someone else said below, often we relate SFX and thought balloons to comic heightened reality, not realism, so people drop these because they want something to have a kind of authentic reality. I'm not sure that always means no SFX, but it's a choice. - Hass

One fun meaning behind "CHAKA" (intentional or not) - is that it was (is?) the tag name for one of Los Angeles' most prolific grafitti taggers - who wrote CHAKA more than 10,000 times in public places en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Ramos

The sfx actually seem overbearing here. Like most of the panels with the sfx is taken up a lot by the sfx.
@Chris-Moore5016 жыл бұрын
Sometimes, this is justified because the sfx is the star of the panel.
@StripPanelNaked6 жыл бұрын
As Chris said here, I think that's the purpose in a lot of these instances. The sound, and the effect of the sound, is important. It speaks to the general philosophy I think that Wimberly has with his SFX. - Hass
