I do consulting in the AI space in Oz and right now, am doing something I didn't think I ever would: revising long term projected IT spend massively downwards... Whatever ends up happening to DeepSeek, their open source model has upended the whole idea of what is possible and at what cost. OpenAI et al may have a performance edge for some time to come with its models, but the edge will be measured in small amounts and it's lead will be measured in weeks. And as for costs? I am no fan of China and I know what the intent was to release this fore free, but am still pleased it will mean much lower energy requirements.

Just read your update about health issues Julia. Glad you have recovered from the worst of it. I also had an intense shutting down illness over the first two weeks of January (cleaning out 20 years of storage and recently passed mothers belongings). It was physically and mentally exhausting and have now recovered. What I don't understand is why you put it down to some sky fairy that has saved you!! This is all your doing, both the bad that caused it and the good that healed it. We need people connected and grounded in reality more than ever going forward. I was taken by the similar scenarios (albeit mine on a lesser serious scale than yours) and how I didn't for one second think of calling on or thanking an omnipotent being to save me. It is my opinion that you would have achieved the same result purely believing in yourself. I find yours and your clones content insightful so of course I'm interested in what makes you tick. As a public figure you should be ready for people to push back on your beliefs. Atheism is just another religion but with a different set of beliefs. Agnosticism is a far more tenable position if you're relying only on facts. The truth is you don't really know if God exists or doesn't exist. Rejecting God is the same as believing in him - still requires an exercise in faith. Agnostic is also an uncomfortable fence sitting term because on any given day I might feel more agnostic than others. I am grounded in observing the natural order of things and comfortable in not knowing. You are the one that that labeled me atheist and I think the better term is secular. Finding a word for being non religious is tricky, its like someone asking what your job is.....I am a non engineer, a non carpenter, a non pilot....we don't need 'non' for anything else. So simply put, I am not religious. btw, Notice how so many people find god by going through some kind of hell, I just like to give them an elbow and say hey, why are giving all your effort away to an imaginary savior. Side note... If Deepseek truly built an AI model using only 50k Nvidia GPU's (not including compute CPUs AND output a model on par or better than Open AI o1 and o3, for only 5 mil! Then of course it will tank the large Frontier model companies like anthropic, Microsoft, Open AI etc.. I see their stock falling like a rock now. Because she can't use Deepseek "to replace every single employee". Deepseek is a company based in China and as such, it has to adhere to the philosophy and goals of communism. This is what the law says is applicable to all Chinese companies. Creating 'agents' to inflict a socio-economic catastrophe on fellow citizens would be a breach of that law. Agents created with Deepseek would have to clearly benefit society and what Julia is planning can end only in tears for the majority but unimaginable wealth for her. This isn't the Chinese way and the CCP has said that they see the value in agents only to improve lives and eliminate poverty. Not to benefit the pocket of one individual.

Nonsense, layoffs are already happening but covertly, and the model being available to everyone doesn't mean much because probably the average person can't run it because the hardware requirements are very high to run the model, that leaves running it on the deepseek website, problem is it that you can't use it that way either right now because their servers are overloaded from the high traffic, so no models like these aren't exactly available to every man and woman

They've become a marketing tool for her company aimed at businesses that want to get rid of their workers.
