But these are two dubious statements I found within the first minute. I’m sure you will find some reports to that effect on cnn or bbc. But you shouldn’t trust them. What a great communicator Dr. Hill is! She explains highly complex situations with simple words and a thread of reasoning that allows us to follow the story and understand its complexity effortlessly. I love watching her interviews. I have read her book, “Mr. Putin, an operative in the Kremlin” and I can only recommend it to anyone trying to understand Putin’s psyche and thinking. 30 years of friendship with Western partners and switched to a new one, improved with new Western technologies. Without satellite correction, pinpoint strikes on locations of deployment of Russian troops, right now, there will be no victory for the Western countries. Bureaucratic delay will lead to the fact that in six months “ tigers ” and “leopards” will end up in a Russian “zoo”. The command of Ukraine exaggerates the losses of the occupying Russian troops in order to mislead Western partners, creating the illusion of controlling the situation. This is an illusion of peace for the west, with which the west is satisfied.

The war, in the words of an Ukranian soldier in its first month: the war will not end as long as there is a 12 year old boy with a butterknife. An other comment from an officer should West's support dry up: " We will fight them with hunting rifles, pichforks, stones and fertilizer bombs." Dr. Fiona Hill is a genius. We need to change the antiquated law in The US that says only American born US citizens can be president vice president. I hope she become United States Secretary of State in a coming administration. If that birth requirement was changed (as although she is an American Citizen of The United States, she was born in The UK) it would be beyond incredible to have a leader such as Dr. Hill. We would of course also gain enormous benefit if she became US Secty of State. She is sharp beyond.

The problem for NATO was that, on the surface, it had bought into the myth of Russia being a "near peer" opponent. @@pabloc88886 "under Polish-Lithuanian rule..." One has to keep in mind that "Lithuanian" in the context of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth meant a subject of the Lithuanian Grand Duchy, which most likely meant that his/her primary language was Ruthenian ("Rusin", nowadays: Belorussian) while the religious affiliation was Greco-Catholic Orthodox Church. The "Polish" ruling Ukraine were mostly Ruthenian aristocracy nobles who converted to Roman Catholic and adopted Polish language. Had Commonwealth managed to assimilate the middle Ukrainian Orthodox nobility and the warrior class Cossacks as it happened with the middle Lithuanian and Ruthenian nobility the history of the Europe would be drastically different ... @@Fidd88 My French is very rusty, but I believe naïf is the masculine form (un homme naïf), and naïve the feminine form (une femme naïve), but as a loan word in English we generally use the feminine form, with or without the accented "ï"; naïf also seems to be used as a noun, and both forms of naïveté/naivety still seem to be in use. Contrast this with blond/blonde, where correct English still maintains the gender of adjective (a blond man, a blonde woman), though the distinction appears to be fading in recent generations.

NATO view on Black Sea strategically, should consider expanding to also include a Kurd state; Reduce Russian influence in Syria by partitioning Syria to form Kurdish state in North-West Syria. Hopefully Ms Hill will continue to advise future administrations and actually be listened to, which apparently she wasn’t during past “patriarchal” regime/administrations. That the current global structure recapitulates past events that she refers to (ie, both “world wars” and more) proves yet again the pathologies that dominate a world out of balance. It might be naive to think that we could achieve “peace in our time” much less a lasting peace, especially when it is clear that the global economy is based on the continued development of arms and ordinance. The charts compiled on todays recap of the BBC podcast with all the predictable characterisations of “the enemy” (drawn in red ink) and the “patriots” in green comparing the relative power of the tanks, where they are coming from (former Warsaw pact, older Soviet, and where the shells and missiles are being provided from) is a brutal reminder that in spite of the stated ambitions and goals of the EU, the truth is bleak. It may or may not be an accurate quote from Albert Einstein when he said that “You cannot prevent war while preparing for war”. One of the victorious European generals after WW1 stated that “Peace is just war done with other means”. My ex-father-in-law pointed out that every 20 years a generation of boys to men reach the age where wars are supplied to them as proof that “War is the sport of kings”. It is also the sport of those transnational industrialists who profit from the manufacture and use of the weapons of war.

Ukraine has extremely rich and complementary mineral resources in high concentrations and close proximity to each other. The country has abundant reserves of coal, iron ore, natural gas, manganese, salt, oil, graphite, sulfur, kaolin, titanium, nickel, magnesium, timber, and mercury. IT ALWAYS COMES DOWN TO MONEY😪

The Swede Rurik that came from Uppland ( north of Stockholm) an area also called Roslagen ( law of the Ros) founded the Kyivan Rus Empire, the ”cradle” of Russia in 830 AD. Could it be that Putin wants to conquer Ukraine to move the Russian capital to Kyiv to ”get back to the roots” of Russia?

Ah, no. I rather think the bureaucracy in Moscow would voice (and more importantly, act upon) their reservations around such a move. Not quite the same as the move from Bonn to Berlin, either.

@@gagatube No, and from your question I'm certain that you aren't really familiar with the Soviet historiography. But I'm pretty sure that the Rus' were not Swedish simply because they were clearly distinguished from Svei(Swede) and the other tribes living at the Baltic coast, "...Varyazi, Svei, Urmane, Gote, *Rus',* Agnyane... Do you know any 'Vikings' worshiping Perun? I would like to see some documented source about that. Or taking Slavic names, from allegedly conquered population? Anyone claiming something like that, doesn't have any clue about a clan society.

When Biden was elected president I thought a forceful message to the MAGA orcs would be to reinstate Fiona Hill and Alexander Vindman as part of the White House staff since they were unjustly removed from government service when they gave testimony during the first Trump impeachment process. Maybe Biden made the offer, I don’t now, but given the sometimes contradictory and painfully slow release of game-changing military aid to Ukraine, I am not optimitistic.

A big part of the equation is rarely discussed. Russia's ability to endure the economic consequences of its war are diminishing by the hour. The big turning point was early December when the EU stopped all oil purchases and put a cap on the price Russia can earn. Phase 2 began in February with the end of all petrolium products. You can already see the crash in government deficits in January which was much worse than the Russians predicted. They have about 10 months of capital reserves and then the same in gold reserves (although this will cause a global price crash) and then all they can do is issue bonds to Russians, since they are denied the capital markets. The month they start depending on bonds is that month that hyperinflation will start kicking in. And they lost nearly a million of their most educated workforce, which fled the country in 2 stages, plus another 300k due to the mobilization, and they have nearly chewed through that 300k so will need more - as they draw off their workforce this will accelerate the economic collapse, which is already evident in the steep decline in sales tax revenue.

The Russian federation Was "winning " the geopolitics. Before Feb 24 /22 War is politics by other means. The Russian federation has lost what they were winning ,they can't go back to winning either . The cost has been to high and will only get higher. Ms Hill is correct to point out That the second world war is an anomaly ,it wasn't just one war but multiple. Outright victories are rare . Unconditional surrender not normal. Italy's war ended in negotiations Bulgaria ,Romania ,Hungary One war ended ,another started with different opponents n allies . both Finish/soviet wars ended with negotiations. At this point . The Russian federation is in a negotiation hole ,that Putin and his government dug themselves into . They were "winning " Now they can't.

Of course the is right when she says there are long lead times for both training and shipping such advanced Western weapons. But that is exactly why it is so disappointing that not only our allies but even President dithered and delayed before finally agreeing, for example, to ship F-16s. If Ukraine had had those months ago, they would be a big help right now. But since Ukraine did not get that, casualties for tanks in the counter-offensive is outrageously high. It is well known that in modern warfare, tanks should be backed up by infantry and covered with aircraft. Otherwise casualties are quite high.
