Extending ephemeral storage with AWS Fargate on Amazon ECS

In this short demo, watch as Adam walks us through how to expand the ephemeral storage for AWS Fargate tasks running on Amazon ECS. The demo takes advantage of the AWS Copilot CLI, but also talks about how to achieve this via AWS Cloudformation.

Thanks for nice walkthrough. Just wondering for ECS EC2 launch type, where does the ephemeral storage come from? is it the EC2 container storage?

When trying to configure this (adding "ephemeralStorage": { "sizeInGiB": 30},) form console , while creating task definition throws message saying Should only contain "family", "containerDefinitions", "volumes", "taskRoleArn", "networkMode", "requiresCompatibilities", "cpu", "memory", "inferenceAccelerators", "executionRoleArn", "pidMode", "ipcMode", "proxyConfiguration", "tags", "runtimePlatform", "placementConstraints"

How to add ephemeralStorage when running Fargate using boto3 run_task

Hey there! You first have to register the task definition, and that is where you can add the ephemeral storage parameter. See here: boto3.amazonaws.com/v1/documentation/api/latest/reference/services/ecs.html#ECS.Client.register_task_definition. Once you have the task definition registered, when you launch a Fargate task via run_task, you should see the ephemeral storage reflected.

​@@ContainersfromtheCouch I have tried this and added ephemeral storage, but still my tasks are failing without storage. Means ephemeral storage is not added correctly, i have tried another solution before trying above one, I went to ECS -> Task Definition -> selected my task definition and did 'create new revision' and clicked 'Configure via JSON' , and tried to add "ephemeralStorage":{ "sizeInGiB": 44 } But it did not allow to save, thrown error as, Should have only family,....... In this place itself , it is not accepting the parameter 'ephemeralStorage'...

@@jackwang1234 There was a restriction with AWS regarding upgrading the ephemeralStorage at that time. we can increase space using 4 option only 1.) AWS Copilot CLI, 2.) CloudFormation, 3.) AWS SDK, 4.) AWS CLI. I have achieved using AWS CLI later. use aws ecs register-task-definition..you have to provide all the required parameters.
