Extension tubes are well known for their benefits to Macro photography but they also add extra flexibility to long telephoto zooms. I demonstrate the affect of using 26mm extension tubes with the Panasonic G9 and the Olympus 40-150 F2.8 pro lens.

Really clear explanation of the principal of allowing a telephoto lens to focus closer by using extension tubes. I pushed the boat out (it was a big boat, and I pushed it a long way) to buy an Olympus 150-400mm but was frustrated to find that I couldn't use it to photograph dragonflies around our pond, so I've ordered some Keno tubes off of eBay for a good price. It seems that everyone reckons they're the best. I'm looking forward to trying the combo out.

Can I put more of the Kenko extention tubes? say, 4 to get closer? J. Payne, Charlotte, N.C. USA.

The total length of the stacked tubes cannot exceed the focal length of the lens itself, otherwise the camera will not focus at all.

Thats a great review and I fully agree: those ETs are well worth the price for the increase in flexibility. In case you own a 1,4x or 2,0x teleconverter things get even more interesting, since one should be able to push the magnification to almost 1:1. I think the order "camera - TC - ET - lens" should work decently. It might be needed to increase the inner diameter of the ET to make the TC fit. Since you already own two pairs of ET you might try to grind the inside of the those ETs, just for the fun of it. :-)

I am considering getting the Olmypus 1.4x TC but I'm concerned about the loss of sharpness for video. Can you comment? Thanks.

@@allthestuffwedo you will encounter a slight loss of sharpness with the TC14. The TC20 will have a way stronger impact on sharpness. At least with my copies. There are users who described it exactly the other way round: stronger loss of sharpness with TC14 than with the TC20. This is against all odds and against every TC I ever owned (mainly for Canon FF: all products and brands of TCs available). For me this sounds like they have gotten a real bad copy of the TC14. Since usually its anyway recommended to decrease in camera video sharpness settings with the GH5 and G9 I'd say: with heavily downsampled 1080p (downsampled from full sensor readout) you'll see no difference at all. With slightly downsampled 4k you'll also see no difference, especially when slightly counteracting by increasing video sharpness up a notch again. At full 5k readout or 4k 1:1 cropped pixel readout (inner 4k crop of full sensor) you will probably notice the slight decrease in sharpness when pixel peeping. Stopping down to f5.6 or even f8 will of course help. Given the fact that you already own the excellent Oly 40-150/2.8 I say get the TC14, which will make a combined 40-210/2.8-4.0, achievable by attaching the TC14. Otherwise I'd say get the nothing less excellent PL 50-200/2.8-4.0 .

I found the set of three made by MOVO, sold by Amazon, US, to work well with my O 40-150 f/2.8 Pro and the O 60mm f/2.8 macro. They fit tight and AF with one, two, or all three stacked, though depending on the lens, a focus rail is more useful for accurate focus for some subjects.

@@allthestuffwedo Hadn't seen that, but now that you ask - and I checked - yes, they do have a black velvet edging - don't see a layer of clothe.

Great review and demonstration of the various focal lengths and their capable minimum focus distance! I have used viltrox tubes on my Full Frame rig for quite some time without any issue. But when I saw how poorly they are made for Micro Four Thirds mount, I am hesitant to try viltrox out of concern of additional dust on my sensor. Thanks for including your thoughts about its fit!
