It was originally a wide cutting here, with space for the London-Heathrow Junction as well. They came up with a theory that turning it into a small mountain avoided taking spoil elsewhere, reducing road traffic.

Deutsche Bahn would. And for the same reason: to appease the NIMBYs. I imagine a cut and cover tunnel isn't that much more expensive to build than a cutting and undeniably looks better.
@yuhihui1089Ай бұрын
This tunnel built to appease NIMBYs points to the rot at the heart of British infrastructure spending. They will suffocate anything Britain does unless planning reforms are put into action. Our prices and delays even make American rail infrastructure costs look half decent. 8276 consents needed to Birmingham even after parliamentary approval!
@TrevorWilliams-fq8mgАй бұрын
That's not surprising. How many planning authorities are there between London and Birningham ? Each one with different conditions and each one with different statutory services diversion requirements. It's the British Way of doing things. The Lower Thames tunnel project (which only goes through 2 council areas plus underneath the Thames) has 2,000 planning documents totalling nearly 300,000 pages. Someone in government (presumably Loiuse Haigh and her department ) are supposed to read through that lot by May so Starmer can give approval for it's construction. Presumably it has to have Royal Assent too, so that might take a few years and another 300,000 pieces of paper to go through. The papermaking industry is in for a bumper year along with the lawyers.
@eirinymАй бұрын
These poor people who work on this impressive project... it's true the price and plan are massively bloated due to NIMBYs and bad planning but the workers on this project are doing a fantastic job. I hope when they get to take a train on it, they'll know they should be proud of the work they did in spite of the people responsible for the controversies.

@1chishАй бұрын
@@johnoleary8751 It wasn't a valid point at all but never mind. Now as to your contribution 'pal': Yes we have railways but not enough of them as passenger growth is showing. The WCML is full to capacity with no room for safe growth. The answer is to move path hungry express trains (Class 390s) off the WCML and free up the paths for freight and suburban services (you know the ones which connect closer towns and cities?) Where to put those express trains then? On to a new specially built railway called HS2 thats where. HS2 is not costing £100 Bn but I see you are just parroting the usual NIMBY nonsense. It is not to just save 20 minutes as I showed above. Its about capacity but adding high speed adds very little extra to the overall costs. More NIMBY nonsense. Neither will the new trains that will replace Class 390s only go halfway. They will be built to run on the legacy system as well as the HS2 UIC GC Gauge. That was always the plan for the first builds. They will run all the way to Glasgow just as the Class 390s do now. @@xaiano794this is the kind of answer that I expect from the average person in our country nowadays. We already have infrastructure that connect the north to the south, just needs slight improvement not a whopping big eyesore. The money would've been better spent connecting the north first before this. @maxplosivo you are the average, in denial about reality. Opposing more trains means you're advocating more cars. If this isn't built, more motorways will be needed, and they will get built. It's so sad that people in this country with no knowledge and zero experience such as yourself feel ignorant enough to try to dictate what we should do with major infrastructure projects?
