Sit back and enjoy this tips and tricks filled video regarding sea front construction, and some of the methods used to craft some of the highest quality construction. Matt and Wade are back in NE, visiting a Long Island builder, Seifert Construction. They have been building in the area for three generations, and the fourth recently joined the team. The guys at seifertconstruc... have been utilizing Versatex for over a decade, a PVC material, to not only bring their clients dreams to reality, but to make sure they stay that way. Building on the ocean, or anywhere for that matter, can be demanding on our materials for a number of reasons, and products like Versatex help combat this. Tune in to learn more about why you should be using materials like this and some construction methods to make these details last as long as possible.

Matt, when I was very young my father was in the building supply business. You pointed out the nails on the truck and struggled a bit to name the packaging. Back in the day my father referred to those as kegs of nails. As I got older the kegs you saw switched to a plywood, cylindrical containers before they were packaged in cardboard 50 # cubes. It's always interesting to see the continuous innovation in home construction featured on your show.

Matt, been a fan for a while now & as a Long Island builder my compliments to Seifert Construction on these projects. I understand this is a sponsored video but I can't help but feel we missed an opportunity to dig deeper into Building Science details. Cedar shakes over Blue Skin, is there a rain screen? If so what type? How does Seifert treat air sealing for a water front house? What's type of insulation is typical for water front projects? Are there any specific modification to the HVAC system? BTW: I also use Versatex including for the exterior trim on my own home remodel. I even fabricated my entrance brackets from laminated sheets Versatex enclosing the LVL structure. It's my opinion that this material expands & contracts on long lengths. I've elected to strategically add caulked expansion joints. I caulk after painting with a high quality silicone that can be custom tinted to exactly match the paint. It's amazing to see the caulking expand & compress.

Tom you pretty much asked all the questions I was looking for, good news I know most of them on one of these projects in the vid. My house is .75 miles from the ocean here on the east end and I have to still take all this into consideration. Everything erodes so much faster. I did the same as you with my Versatex. Also paint it, otherwise looks really plastic like up close. You can see the HVAC system up there as they put in HVRs or EVR, couldn't tell, but they will help get the damp out. Also a dehumidifier system is there to pull more wet air. My house sits in clay so takes a ton of dehumidification to get the moisture out and keep the house fresh. Here we use Zip System or Tyvek over plywood like everywhere. Zip is great if you really really trust the application of it. Then closed cell on the walls and in the rafters. I didn't use the blue screen and most don't around here, been told its not needed and hard to make a smooth finish. All the systems have pluses and minus, I tend to choose the one with the least amount of application mistakes expected.

@@wesrobinson7366 Hi Wes, thanks for joining the conversation. I realize I could have phrased my email better. My intention was to suggest to Matt that when he takes the Build Show "on the road" he consider the opportunity to relay how systems, (WRB, HVAC etc...) vary in different climate zones. Matt clearly defines the best practices for Texas, we both know Long Island requires modifications to these systems for our specific location. He's traveled to many areas but my knowledge this was his 1st trip to Long Island & I admit to being extra intrigued. One of the things I like about Matt's Build Show is that he exchanges information with other Builders. Like you I have my preferred methods for these systems & welcome the opportunity to discuss them.

I laid more brick and stone on the east end of Long Island to walk to Connicutte..and since 87 when I started doing my own work but still an apprentice ( i was taught the old trade secrets from my master straight off the boat from Mondello Italy and their name was Mondello) those secrets are the difference between 10 years and over 100,then I got my bachelors in applied sciences for masonry,the grandfather and he 3 sons taught me everything, are work is in fancy Hamptons magazines, and we always bid twice the highest bidder and got every job, and then would be asked if they gave more money we could do it sooner, I started at age 13 and spent rainy days at the Freemason Lodge in Riverhead NY...when Papi died Frank the 1st ..out of over 30 people in the family passed down his tools to me, beautiful 1800s chisels and jointers..all marked with the Compass and Square, Im now just doing small jobs under SET N STONE, I also made the biggest chimney in NYS.12 x 14 feet 4 storys with a fire box on each level,you can see it from Google earth,Now im watching landscapers robbing people for doing hack jobs and thinking Masonary you can learn over night...the houses, the big ones in the Hamptons we would have to anchor the patios to the houses foundations.theyre are really not many real masons left,who know the trade...or even realize philly trowels are 3 tools in 1,one is to lay the brick or stone,the sharp edges youre tuaght to split a brick in half and the tip of the handel when you add a knob and bag off youre trowel on the mud pan,you use it to tap the brick in place..but i always use a Bon London leather or a orange Rose..

Your original comment made it sound like we should just go to our local hardware store and pick up some roman cement. Besides modern cement is just as strong. The cement in the hoover dam will keep getting stronger for for decades. Thats just buzz word phrases that doesnt mean much

Hell if you really want to get serious might as well use transparent aluminum (ALON® or Aluminum Oxynitride) for the windows but who has $10,000 sq meter or to break it down further it would be roughly over $10 a square inch. I understand that there are over 1,500 square inches in a meter I just wanted to simplify it a bit.

@@Alex.smiffy you still should not put it below grade. There's no reason for it. Thats what concrete/wall pavers are for. The PVC is just a decorative trim.

How about termites behind the versatek?
@ianrobinson476
@ianrobinson476 3 жыл бұрын
Well you could have termites behind any siding with a wooden framing. Moisture attracts termites because it softens wood. So making sure your siding and vapor barrier are doing their job helps prevent termites.

@rmontena4583 3 жыл бұрын
@@ianrobinson476 My point is this; never cover the edge of a wood framed building with soil (or an asphalt driveway or a planter etc). This video demonstrates this condition. I believe that most building codes require a minimum separation between wood structure and finished grade of 8". This allows for inspection to determine the existence of "termite tubes".

This is a well made video but you really need to start putting your sponsored by disclaimers on the beginning of your videos. @@jmcdonne ya got me. I missed it and I'm not the only one. Which is kind of the point I guess. Look at any other major channel that makes videos like this. The sponsorship is plastered everywhere with sponsorship intros and a blurb at the very beginning of the description. Its almost like they are going out of the way keep it as low key as possible. Don't mind me though, It's probably just me hating informercials and really being annoyed at not realizing it until 5 mins into the video and wanting to complain about it.
