Spix's Macaw: The Little Blue Macaw
Description: Common Names: Spix's Macaw, Little Blue Macaw
Scientific Name: Cyanopsitta spixii
Appearance: This medium-sized parrot weighs about 300 grams (11 oz). It is known for its vibrant blue feathers, with a grey-blue head, light blue underparts, and vivid blue upperparts. Males and females look almost identical, but females are slightly smaller.
Habitat and Diet:
Original Range: Endemic to Brazil, Spix's Macaw had a very restricted natural habitat due to its dependence on the Caraiba tree for nesting, feeding, and roosting.
Diet: It primarily feeds on seeds and nuts from the Caraiba tree and various Euphorbiaceae (spurge) shrubs, which are dominant in the Caatinga biome.
Conservation Status:
Extinction in the Wild: The Spix's Macaw was declared extinct in the wild by the IUCN in 2019. The main causes were habitat destruction, illegal trapping, and trade.
Historical Rarity: The bird was rare in the wild throughout the twentieth century due to deforestation in its limited range. It was also rare in captivity, partly because of the remoteness of its natural habitat.
Lifespan:
In the Wild: The lifespan in the wild is unknown. The only documented wild bird lived for more than 20 years.
In Captivity: The oldest known bird in captivity lived to be 34 years old.
Historical Significance:
Discovery: Spix's Macaw is named after German naturalist Johann Baptist von Spix, who collected the first specimen in April 1819 near the São Francisco River, close to Juazeiro, Brazil.
