I am truly amazed at peoples' capacity to ignore an elephant in the living room. Over population, licentious capitalistic behavior, nuclear proliferation, climate chaos, repercussions of AI, wealth inequality, homelessness, militarism, are examples of conditions that wise leadership should have nipped in the bud if we were ever influenced by a golden rule. The bottom line is that most of the eight billion people on the planet don't want to know. It is my hope that conditions will change for the better, but in the mean time I'm going to try to be kind, do as little harm as possible and think before acting.

No, the bottom line is that the majority live their lives in constant economic and social insecurity, alienated from the means of production and distribution apart from engaging as wage slaves. The prevailing ideas in a class (property) based social system are those of the ruling class - in contemporary terms, the capitalist class and their well paid sycophants.

How close are we to being able to build a global platform for digital democracy? Citizens assemblies around the world unite.

The idea that this social system - wage-labour & capital (regardless of the mix of state vs private capital) - can be reformed to mitigate the vast multitude of environmental, social, violent ills it spawns is delusional. This social system has a single overpowering immutable dynamic - the accumulation of capital regardless of the prevailing economic and political ideology fetish. The answer to this hideously complex property based system is its very antithesis - the abolition of wages, capital, money and property and the democratic establishment of common ownership which means the state, its coercive powers, and government are redundant, and replaced by democracy for and by all. And to achieve that it requires a single purpose political party that becomes redundant when the job is done.

You forget that the majority prefer capitalism to any other system. Ironically, you can't organize a better system without making it less democratic. Humans suck basically, they are narcissistic, cruel and selfish, and they create a world that reflects that.

If we don't start tapping the brakes on the sixth great extinction which is almost entirely human caused, the ultimate extinction may just be ourselves. We are clueless as to which species of plants and animals are absolutely essential for our survival.

"Derailment risk" is already underway with calls to scale back action in climate change because of the cost if living crisis. Ironically the high inflation and stagnant economy is to some extent due to climate change impacts. These impacts will only get worse. But also action on climate change is seen as an expense and a luxury in times if difficulty, no mater what that difficulty is e g. the war in Ukraine.

The problem in the world is the entertainment TV. Gameshows, Studio TV... I wish XR would understand the massive influence on people. I wish rather than oil and Gas you would act to raise awareness about TV influence and entertainment hypnotic control over masses

It is a hard reality that, although we can express bemusement about derailment and doom loops etc , we need to understand how this boils down to power being monopolized by the very rich and powerful who effectively manipulate all political and economic agendas - it's a bit naive and is certainly an unhelpful framing to talk about how 'WE' are doing these things. XR need to acknowledge the crux of the political, economic and social battle that needs to be engaged. A clear ecosocialistic strategy that encompasses the international, national and the local.

In my mid seventies, I now ride a scooter, and humbly survive in my tiny stone castle I made in the rural BC 🍁 homestead. Decided in my childhood to not procreate, as I saw the failings of the modern world way back in the fifties. (A car screeching to a stop just before it would have squashed me riding a borrowed tricycle.) Made a nice cedar box for groceries. Always fought for change, and to save the natural world. A paradigm shift in my mind anyways. Don’t need to do the hard labour jobs any more, but I empathies with the working stiffs. Downsize, live simply, grow a garden, help others, speak your truth, enjoy life as best you can, as things can only get worse.

Surely the oldest 'climate meme' is the Epic of Gilgamesh? -- which also has a lot to say about the irrationality of human power/bureaucracy?

Get off fossil fuels? How pray tell do we do this. Solar and wind machines have huge carbon footprints from mining, transportation, manufacturing, maintenance, and must be replaced every 20 years. Day we get off fossil, add billions to those already starving and on the move to greener pastures that do not exist. We are in overshoot, carbon pollution heating the earth is one symptom of many

@@jamesharkins6799 Geothermal contributes 1% of global electricity. Geothermal contributes 0.2% of global total energy. Geothermal is geologically dependant. Geothermal is a very limited access energy source.

@_JollyJack_ geothermal does not have to be a limited. Straight down under everyone's feet is heat. Fracking technology can reach that heat and put geothermal anywhere.
