5 people in the control room? That seems a lot these days. My station only has 3 and we aren't automated. What positions are staffed? Also, you should do a station building tour. :)

Who controls commercial breaks
@mj69622 жыл бұрын
A director and a T.D. What a luxury! 😊 quick question… I noticed that you fade to black and tell MC to roll their break at nearly the same time you go to black…. So is there no pre-roll for the break in MC?

I don’t get why they start and end in black. How should the MCR know there is video coming in??
@JordanBahrPian-UkePlayer6 жыл бұрын
They would usually notify the director that something is wrong. Most stations have monitors specifically designated for Off-Air feeds, so even though there's a delay, the director would be able to see the problem and call it out.

Have a question to ask if I may please, I know that this was channel 6 where everything was happening at, but noticed that the main control person who was in the bottom left video, he was actually wearing a Channel 7 shirt, if you dont mind me asking, do he also work at that station as well as this one??? Thanks.....
@rlv23997 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, sorry for the late response. I used to work for KOAM in Joplin hense the Ch 7 shirt where I got my start then I moved to Tulsa and worked in Tulsa from 2011-2016. It was a weekend and I haven't had done laundry yet! lol

Can one show override another?
@pizzasubs6 жыл бұрын
In regards to that basketball game that you had to wait for, even if the game went into overtime, or overtimes, all depending on how long it actually lasted, would you still do your normal broadcast even if it was lets say 45 minutes to an hour past when you should have normally started????
@rlv23996 жыл бұрын
Andrew Silva on this one it was a 5pm so because we were up against CBS Evening News at 5:30 so we had to condense. CBS gives us contingencies on whether or not we do a newscast. They had cutoffs like 5:18:26. If they went past that then they would fill. If they got out before that then we had a show. It wouldn't be too much longer after that we would scrap a 5pm news then turned our 6pm into a one hour. The 5pm slot eventually became paid programming. The news spots were more expensive than the Paid programming and we were losing money with this route. During SEC football it was guranteed the 5pm would get scrapped. CBS was real particular if we covered up something of theirs. If we had local programming then we could JIP that show after running a full 30 minute newscast.

Do your camera ops not have talkback? Seems you can never get word to them.
@rlv239910 жыл бұрын
The cam ops do have talkback. There wasn't much for them to talk about in this particular show. Our FD usually will jump on and ask something. Also we hear it fine in the control room, but anything we hear from the wireless headsets comes in a bit low when recorded. Audio and Master Control seem to be fine because they're using the same RTS panel that we use.

Also what the hell happened with your vision mixer at the end there? Wouldn't switch to your VTR output? Did anyone take a look at it afterwards?
@rlv239910 жыл бұрын
It ended up being more operator error. We tried repeating the problem but it didn't do anything. Most likely I didn't hit the cut button just right! lol. Also this is a Grass Valley Kayenne we're using. Our video playback for our VO SOTS and PKGS have an auto abort function as we use Command from Avid for playback. So if we jump on the tape and jump back off then the tape will abort to the next event. So when we hit take the tape, we're hesistant to hit the cut button again with fear of aborting, of course we can turn that function off on the fly if we need to.
@JordanBahrPian-UkePlayer4 жыл бұрын
rlv2399 My stomach dropped when I read “Command for playback.” The station I direct for uses Avid for pretty much everything but promo production: iNews for newsroom operation, Media Composer for editing, Command for video/graphics playback, etc. It’s annoying but mostly bearable.

Very nice work. One of the most detailed BTS clips I've seen. Overall audio level was a bit low... if you ever do another one of these, you might consider putting PGM in one channel and PL in the other, so viewers can adjust manually...

Does Megan hear everything you say or is there a button you press for her to hear you
@rlv23998 жыл бұрын
We have a button we press for her to hear us. Just about anyone in the control room can talk to her if necessary. But usually the Producer is the only one that will talk to her. (Sometimes the audio op will if she forgot to turn on her mic since we are all wireless)

Very cool. What are those clocks in the panel for?
@rlv23998 жыл бұрын
There is one clock for the director that resets each time we go to a soundbite or a package so we can keep track of when to add lower third titles, total time of a SOT/PKG, etc. The other is for the producer to countdown to either end of a block, interview, weather, or end of a show.

The Kayanne doesn't have the Auto Roll feature like the Ross Vision does so that the moment you tally your video channel on-air it rolls it?
@rlv23999 жыл бұрын
Yes it does. We have not began to use that feature yet. Our video playback is through Command via Avid. We do however have it set up to auto abort 2 of our channels once the tally notices that we are no longer on that channel. Unfortunately our newscasts are very complex for example we will roll video in a monitor behind talent on camera before we go to the actual source full. If we enabled the auto roll in that manner, Command would jump to the next event. Another issue we've run into is we use Viz as our graphics system. Producers can create graphics with video embedded in it with two of the same channels but the Kayenne can't see it. We had the same problem with the Kalypso. Viz says it's a coding issue. Plus some of our shifts we have a Server operator and the TD calls and punches the show.
@mocub339 жыл бұрын
rlv2399 We use VIZ as well. Talk about the biggest pain in the butt system!
