I stumbled across this video today and am so thankful for it. I don’t think I could have broken all of this information down myself-thank you for making this. ❤

You may have figured this out by now but what you are looking for are decodable text not leveled text. Decodable text=phonics=science of reading. Leveled text=sight words=balanced literary. Research shows science of reading is what gives kids the best foundation when kids hit about 3rd or 4th grade they should be done reviewing phonics and can decode books at any level. Here reading level finally comes into play to make sure the comprehension/ vocabulary is appropriate for your child.

If you're curious, see this post for ideas after AAR 4. blog.allaboutlearningpress.com/after-all-about-reading/ At the end of Level 4, students have the phonics and word attack skills necessary to sound out high school level words, though they may not know the meaning of all higher level words. (Word attack skills include things like dividing words into syllables, making analogies to other words, sounding out the word with the accent on different word parts, recognizing affixes, etc…) Happy Reading!

Super helpful video! We started Level 1 and I grabbed the Usborne 1st library set so my daughter can use as readers and then I realized ohhhh no... jumping way ahead of what she can do. Now I need to invest in other books 😬 😆

Hi! Yes, this was helpful! We use LOE and my oldest is nearing the end of Level C and it's amazing! He can read so much now but I do struggle to find good books at this level. I'll have to check out the Sonlight and TGTB, but do they discuss religion/religious beliefs/themes? I've steered away from those since they come from religious curricula.

Yes, I have the same question about whether those readers are religious or would be secular friendly!

Tg&tb is most likely going to have words like God in it, but it's non denominational and focused on things like l'ook like what God made'. However I imagine this very little at this reading stage. They have samples of most things on their website and I believe there is samples of their readers on their website so you could check if you're comfortable with it by looking at those. ☺️

Here is a spreadsheet for TGTB religious content ... as for Sonlight, the readers are not religious, at least the Grade 1 books! docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1wudSX4BdSIjuxd4GV-rQdQZTc07a33LJs7Z3KasB8go/edit#gid=882050176

Thank you so much. This has been such great information. I have the Usborne first library as well and was so sad that we aren’t yet able to use all of the books. I’ve also been looking at The Good and the Beautiful leveled readers. So thank you again this helps pace out buying leveled readers, because I too love books and would rather just buy these. 🤣💩

I’ve had the same problem with trying to get readers from the library. They don’t align with All About Reading and so we are struggling with finding more things she can read. Good to know about the Bob book levels so I might try those first.

I'd say after AAR level 2, maybe half way through 3 is when my son's reading really exploded. We finished 4 at the end of last year. I will say, he is still struggling with chapter books. It's not that he doesn't know the words or is having trouble decoding larger words, it's that the amount of words per page are really overwhelming to him. He also has some neuro stuff going on, so that complicates things. He is fine with early chapter books like Arthur, but even books like Charlotte's Web, that are within his lexile, he is struggling with. So we are having him read TGTB Level 2 readers, then level 3, until he starts to feel less overwhelmed by chapter books and to really boost his confidence and fluency. I will definitely need to get some of these that you mentioned for my kindergartener tho!

How long does it take to get through a level of AAR? What age/grade do you think they’ll finish level 4?
@sciencemama
@sciencemama 3 жыл бұрын
I would say it is about a level for each grade but it really depends on your kiddo! Most people start Level 1 in K ... so maybe 3rd grade to finish up Level 4

Can you use these readers in replace of all about reading level 1 readers? Does it follow the same sequence?

No, they don’t follow the sequence - I would say it would be best to have the spine of AAR readers and use this list for extras.

Is AAR require children to write? My 4yo is working on reading because she is keen and has mastered all the letter sounds, but her handwriting is obviously not fabulous, and I struggle to find a reading curriculum that doesn't require writing

No writing - I would highly recommend AAR because it is all games in the student book!
