The main problem with Lisa Goes Gaga is the way it uses its celebrity guest compared to past episodes. The guests used to be like a garnish to the episode, you could take them out of the episode or replace them with someone else and it would still make sense. This episode focuses so heavily on Lady Gaga that the story is as much about her as it is about Lisa. There never used to be any episodes which were actually *about* the celebrity guest.
@uknownada6 жыл бұрын
Not really. Stark Raving Dad, Flaming Moe's, Homer at the Bat, Burns Baby Burns, When you Dish Upon a Star, and Smart and Smarter all wouldn't work as well without their celebrities voicing themselves. Obviously the quality of the episodes I mentioned...vary, but there used to be plenty of episodes that surrounded celebrity guests, even in classic Simpsons. Lady Gaga is far from the first, and it isn't the last. There was an Elon Musk episode a year or so back, and it was just as bad.

One thing I often do when this episode is brought up is compare it to Stark Raving Dad to show how the series used to handle guests. Micheal Jackson was written into Springfield in an interesting way and while they still play up the general hype of Micheal Jackson, it never takes over the entire episode. To put it one way, it feels more like they wrote the episode first or at least had the general outline then added Micheal Jackson like they didn't write the episode specifically because Micheal Jackson would be a guest star. Kind of like this; Episode is written > Micheal Jackson is added into the plot Lisa Goes Gaga on the other hand feels more like they did the opposite, like so; Lady Gaga is added into the plot > Episode is written around Lady Gaga. Yes Stark Raving Dad is often known as "The Micheal Jackson episode", but a lot of people still remember the birthday song he sang with Bart and the pink shirt and the asylum jokes. With Lisa Goes Gaga, people just know it as "The Lady Gaga episode" because there's very little more to it. It's not a particularly awful episode, just comes off as very boring and for a series like The Simpsons, I think being boring is pretty bad for an episode because it feels like there was little to no effort put in

In Florida. In the 2000 episode "Kill the Alligator and Run" episode of the Simpsons, they go to Florida and they find a 50 year old alligator called Captain Jack. While the years are a little off, the alligator is close enough to 50 for the Simpsons to call it that and have it still be the same one.

From a Gaga fan's perspective, one thing that felt off to me was that they incorporated her celebrity aesthetics & nothing else, then kinda hoped the spectacle would carry itself. Even for me there were too many moments of "look how great she is" which it didn't feel like she deserved in the context of the story. There are things that make both her and The Simpsons unique & great but neither strengths were tapped into.

Thinking about it, the whole "Truth Teller" stuff could have been it's own episode. Lisa starting this anonymous account to defend herself and then finding out that people are more willing to listen to what she has to say when it doesn't come from her (I wouldn't make it a gender commentary thing tho, it's more about Lisa having a reputation) Not that this would make for a great episode, I just feel like that plot point could have been it's own thing.
@stuartdunlop88342 жыл бұрын
4:51 - That's how it should have been written. Gaga should have been a figment of Lisa's imagination, being the embodiment of the current popular "perfect female idol" persona who is trying to make Lisa "popular", which Lisa rejects. It could have been a great subversion of Stark Raving Dad in that the "celebrity guest" doesn't help, and Lisa has to learn to be herself rather than worrying what the trends and online chats say. Heck, they could even defend Lady Gaga fans rather than making her villain, saying that that's her/their expression from the outside world and that everyone's is individual. And, on the whole, the comedy needs to be there. I laughed at two gags and those weren't about Gaga, so that's a sign the show doesn't follow the comedic threads in the material.

People always rag on this episode, but i remember there was an episode with Elon Musk that felt desperately similar. His motivation was that he simply _couldn't_ think of any cool new inventions. No real parody of the character, no real character deprivation which makes Simpsons guest appearances so snappy and interesting. I think he was _meant_ to come across as being slightly pathetic, but it still felt so awfully self-serving. edit: Also let it be known that one of my favorite guess stars was David Byrne. The tik tok opening actually is pretty cool for all of those reasons, they also played that song at my elementary school a lot which I always thought was just ridiculous given the context of the song. It was a brand new school and all of the teachers were fresh out of college, they told us about how many of them had just finished college, which is why I figured they were playing a song like that in front of a bunch of children that aren’t theirs. I realized this even then in 3rd grade, I hated that school. But because of that the tik tok song is somewhat nostalgic which is why I like it I think.

I think when we look at Stark Raving Dad, it becomes clear why people hate this episode. Both try to make you feel sorry for Lisa and I'd argue that Stark Raving Dad does a worse job at that because they don't really focus on her. Both end with a song about Lisa. Both feature one of the most influential entertainers of their time. This was supposed to be the Stark Raving Dad of this generation. Instead it's way too over the top with how much it beats up Lisa and lacks the self awareness that SRD had. Well sort of there's this one part where Lisa calls Gaga out and they had something going with the fact that Lisa decides to become a monster but it happens too fast. They never address what Lisa said. I thought it was great that Lady Gaga, the real life person, would let something like that happen. It felt like she knew on some level that it's easy for her to love herself and be accepted and she felt hypocritical making it sound easy. There were so many ways they could have solved this without making Gaga seem hypocritical because on some level I do think that her songs have helped people even if I do think it's easy for Lady Gaga to love herself and be loved by others. But instead we get a resolution that's the most boring and safe way to resolve anything making the song at the end feel unearned. If they didn't spend so much time beating up Lisa and toned it down a bit, maybe connected the Bart sub plot that was cut into Lisa's realization we would have had a great episode.

Honestly I think this is one of the best episodes of the new seasons because it's one of the worst. A big reason why Modern Simpsons is so bad in my opinion, that not a lot of people talk about, is that it's just so dull. People go on about how the old Simpsons had heart and character and it did, but really, most of the episodes back then were exciting and fun. Bart the General wasn't really much of a heartfelt episode, but it was so fun and memorable. Cape Feare is one of the best episodes because it's hilarious and such a ride from start to finish, but it's not sentimental in any way. But regardless if old Simpsons had a wacky episode or a sentimental episode, it will almost always be an entertaining episode. New Simpsons is not entertaining. It's not fun or funny at all, but it's also not cringeworthy or obnoxious. Family Guy is obnoxious. New Simpsons is just boring and forgettable. So while I hate this episode a whole lot, I at least admire it for being a noteworthy episode of the new seasons because it's so cringeworthy, even though it's still really boring. It's sad that that's the best kind of compliment I can give it, but a terrible episode that's discussed will always be infinetly better than a mediocre episode that nobody cares about or remember in my eyes. By the way, the most recent episode involved Maude's ghost coming back. Nobody's hating it. That's how unnoteworthy New Simpsons is.
@robertholston47086 жыл бұрын
uknownada While I am one of the only people who still watch and generally like the show, I agree. The biggest problem of recent years is that it is bland and forgettable. I feel like lots of people gave up on the show in the Mike Scully era around 1999-2001. That is the era when shit when off the rails with the infamous jockey elves and what have you. Al Jean's return brought things more down to earth despite the occasional schlock. Since most people stopped watching around the turn of the millennium they assume every episode after that is like the alligator episode, which really isn't true. That said Simpsons will always be my favorite show and I think there are good episodes in each season. Some there are only like 3-4 decent to good as opposed to 22 excellent episodes.

I have never like Gaga's music or showmanship in the least, so it pains me to say this... but I really doubt she had anything directly to do with how annoying this episode got. She seems to have a decent sense of humor about her persona and what she does, but management was hyper-protective of her image in the relatively early days. I mean, they flat out told Weird Al to go soak his head when he asked permission to do a parody song, something Gaga herself was completely in favor of. And she later made fun of herself as a bad guy in one of the Machete movies, so it does seem like things have settled down. So while this does all scream vanity project, it oddly seems to reflect on the studio heads a lot more than the guest star. As a last remark, boy is it sad when a show that used to poke fun at celebrities and status starts to really roll in it. This is about as sad as when South Park had that Swedish Let's Player on and then did fuck all with him.

My only problem with this episode is; Lisa is experiencing pre- teen problems. I fell like at this point, they need to age up the kids. Within a the context that Lisa was, let’s say 13, and in the 7th grade with all its social problems. The context would make you feel sorry for her. Yea Gaga being there is corny, but at the time and in that age group it would apply more to the story.

I remember REALLY hating this episode when It first came out, I'm glad I'm not alone on this.

I'm with ya. In my opinion it was a boring episode, but nothing more than that. I've seen a lot of people say its the worst episode ever, and I just don't see it. There are many worse episodes than this. This one is just forgettable and dull. Which put it on par with many of the later meh episodes. side note: I also enjoyed the Tick Tock intro. I found it no more harmless than one of the longer couch gags, and agree that it was really well edited.

I've seen every Simpsons episode at least twice... except for this episode. Up to 2 years ago, I hadn't even seen it once. I had to though just to say I've seen every episode.

It's always worth remembering that The Simpsons as a concept was quickly thrown together purely because the cartoon Matt was actually passionate about wouldn't have been accepted for the Tracey Ullman show. Although it may have many funny, tender and thoughtful moments, it's still a show that is designed to make money and that's why we get these kind of episodes. Mind you I still love it or I wouldn't be commenting on a 4 year old video.

You did a good job reviewing it and talking about the issues instead of blindly hating it without giving it a watch. I genuinely like New Simpsons, and if you hate me for that, I don’t care.

I actually kind of liked this episode because it shows a message that everyone has a good and bad side some more than others. It shows that everyone can help others.

I do remember watching this episode when it first came out on Hulu, but I hardly remember anything about the episode itself so I'm glad I saw this review. Honestly I forgot that it came out way back in 2012. I thought it came out more recently than that like in 2014 or something. I guess as I've gotten older time just feel like it's going by a lot faster. I was born in 1988, one year before the Simpsons first aired and I believe one year after they first appeared on The Tracey Ullman Show.

it's like Lady gags team paid the Simpsons to worship her for 22 minutes and called that a episode. that was a publicity stunt not a story.

The older episodes used the guest stars for something. Lisa goes Gaga doesn’t really do that.

"Even if it accidentally led to Calvin peeing on a lot of stuff" Yes, but just imagine how much fucking worse it would be if he didn't do that? If that's the extent of the copyright infringement, he got lucky.

You didn’t even mention the fact that this episode ends by plugging the theatrical short film The Longest Daycare, as Ice Age: Continental Drift was being released around the same time that had this short attached.

I'm glad that you took the time to explain WHY this didn't work as an episode of The Simpsons rather than ranting about the show being out of ideas and selling out to the lowest common denominator. Sure, those are valid criticisms of Lisa Goes Gaga, but it doesn't really explain how the episode itself falls apart.

I just got an idea for what might be a funny way to use Lady Gaga. Though it may not fit The Simpsons' usual formula exactly, what if she were a Supervillain, like Hank Scorpio?

Met the lead writer of this episode Tim Long at a Simpsons trivia event in Los Angeles. He started in the late 90s after the show was starting to go downhill. He took full credit the one decent episode in which he had only partial input ("Behind the Laughter"). He also stated that there was one writer in particular that he did not like working with, but didn't say who it was. It's kind of a shame that he stuck around after Lisa Goes Gaga, considering what a bombshell of shit it was.

Gotta disagree on the Marge and gaga scene. What made the joke funny to me wasnt that it was just shocking, it was also that Marges unreasonable unconsious fears came to life in a single moment. Yeah, its shocking, but its a bit clever.

I only very occasionally watch an episode of modern Simpsons, usually when someone says "No, it's actually good again! You should give it another shot!" And I remember thinking that this episode was bland, but no worse than a lot of other modern episodes. It didn't use gross-out gags, didn't revolve around Homer being a jerk or getting a new job, didn't have a third act that consisted of people trying to kill Homer and didn't resolve in an overly wacky way. It kind of kissed up to the guest star, but even classic Simpsons wasn't above that (Lisa the Vegetarian, anybody?). I thought the concept of Lisa anonymously defending herself had enough potential to be a full episode on its own. I'm not saying it was a good episode, it certainly wasn't, but I don't think it's anywhere near the worst.
