I took a tragically bad shot on a coues deer a few years back. I shot from the next ridge over and then had to stalk in to finish the job. When I got there, I found myself about 40 yards uphill from the deer. I shouldered my rifle, looked through the scope and just saw grey fur in the bottom half and the trees he was in over his shoulder. Instead of zooming back out, I went down a little bit until all I saw was grey and shot. I hit that deer right through both elbow joints and it's front legs were just dangling as it tried to run off and it tumbled down the mountain. It was probably a good 100yds down the mountain before I caught back up with it and was able to shoot it again. This time I made sure to zoom out, place the shot right and it dropped right away. It was heartbreaking to watch and even worse because it was my own fault. That was a real wake up call and since then, I've changed a lot about how I hunt. I'm not trigger shy but I am much more reserved about taking shots, even on smaller game. If it ain't right, I ain't shooting. Also, I am much more meticulous about zooming my scope out until I have my target acquired.

Janis, can we get some info on that rifle? It looks like a Carolina Custom similar to Steve's. Would love to know make/model/caliber.

Janis has great hair. Solid tips too. Killed my first mule deer last year after still hunting right through his bed. About 50 feet later I turned to my left and spotted him 70 yards away staring at me. Now I know what I was smelling!
